Johnson Memorial Health Services (JMHS) was officially honored March 16 during the Ag Day and Health Fair as one of seven hospitals in the State of Minnesota to be designated as a Comprehensive Advance Life Support (CALS) facility. Dr. Darrell L. Carter of ACMC in Granite Falls, one of the CALS program founders, made the presentation to JMHS hospital staff. The CALS Program is an educational program designed specifically for rural health providers. CALS prepares participants to evaluate and treat time- sensitive, life or organ threatening emergencies in the whole sphere of medicine including the critically ill or injured patient who may have experienced trauma, cardiac, stroke, respiratory, OB, pediatric or neonatal emergencies. The program maintains a rural focus to help healthcare teams working in rural areas with resources such as specialized equipment that may not be available. They use a team approach for training and real-world practice and advocates a systems-based approach that links healthcare institutions and providers at all levels and stages of emergency care. Stacey Lee, JMHS CEO said “This prestigious designation is a testament to JMHS’s dedication to the wellbeing of our community. The CALS process requires a high level of commitment from both staff and providers to meet the stringent criteria for training and involvement, up-to-date technology and evidence of commitment to the CALS principles.” CALS hospitals are considered leaders in the field. The designation can also enhance recruitment potential it becomes a benchmark for quality training and practice, membership in a community of like-minded institutions and educational opportunities for staff. The following are also CALS certified, but were not present at the Health Fair for the presentation: Jill Christie (FNP), Julie Olson (PA/ FNP), Sue Helgeson (RN), Pam Kloster (RN), Robin Nohrenberg (RN), Kris Gruwell (RN), Maggie Pehrson (RN), Deb Gee (RN), Marilee Landmark (RN), Mary Helgeson (RN), Nicole Stock (LPN) and Cindy Benson (LPN). Medical StaffSpring is often considered the season of new beginnings. Fresh buds bloom, animals awaken and the earth seems to come to life again. For Johnson Memorial Health Services (JMHS) spring has brought a number of exciting new endeavors.

This Fall we look to break ground for the new capital project that includes a new Care Center, relocated parking lot and helipad, a new JMHS campus entrance, a new Surgical Suite, and some internal renovations.

The project is set to begin construction no later than September 30, 2016. The entire project is estimated to take between 24 to 28 months. Project information will be made available to the community in various communication mediums before and throughout construction.

In addition to the new construction project, JMHS has added e-Psychiatry, Pulmonary Rehab and Interventional Radiology services to meet the ever changing needs of our community.

It is an exciting time for JMHS – our patients, residents, medical providers, staff, and community! The additional services and new building project strategically positions JMHS to compete in the ever-changing healthcare climate and remain in a position of strength to improve patient care, continue to develop new services, and recruit physicians and specialists in the future.

Visit our website at www.jmhsmn.org for up to date information on the construction project and other JMHS happenings.

When you or a family member is ill or injured, where do you turn? If you’re like most in our community, you go to Johnson Memorial Health Services (JMHS). Why? Because you know, you will receive absolute top-notch medical care. And you also know that you’ll be treated like a real person, by experienced and compassionate healthcare professionals.

Last year your generous donations and grant money helped JMHS purchase new High Definition (HD) Endoscopy Equipment used to do Colonoscopies and Gastroscopies. This equipment is the best offered in the industry. The HD equipment provides a crisp image that allows physicians to detect pre-cancerous lesions and abnormalities earlier and aides in performing faster, safer and more effective procedures.

As medical care advances, JMHS is committed to staying on the cutting edge providing services that promote the health and wellbeing of our community. Which is why we have changed our annual fundraiser Gala to a BASH (Building A Superior Healthcare). We believe it better reflects our mission of partnering with JMHS for the health and viability of our community.

Each donation to the JMFoundation allows JMHS to continue to provide Excellence in Healthcare, Everyday– for you, for your loved ones, for every person in the community. It truly all comes back to you!

Nexplanon ImplantNexplanon is a progestin–only (estrogen-free) implant placed in the inner, upper arm hidden from view. It is effective to prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years. Done as an outpatient procedure, this method is convenient for busy women who don’t want to worry about daily, weekly or monthly administration.

Carla Lee, Certified Family Nurse Practitioner is trained and certified in the Nexplanon implant. To see if you’re a good candidate call 320-769-4393 to schedule a Nexplanon consult.

Pulmonary RehabPulmonary Rehab is an exercise and education program designed to help people with chronic lung disease lead a more active life. People with chronic lung disease often suffer with shortness of breath which makes performing daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and grocery shopping difficult.

Pulmonary Rehab provides specific exercises to help increase strength and make daily activities easier to do. It also provides patients and their families a better understanding of lung disease, what medications do and the important role they play, when to call a health care provider, the importance of good nutrition and hydration and tips that could help keep from being hospitalized.

Talk to your primary health care provider about your interest in the program. JMHS will assist with determining insurance coverage.

CALS prepares participants to evaluate and treat time-sensitive, life or organ threatening emergencies in the whole sphere of medicine including the critically ill or injured patient who may have experienced trauma, cardiac, stroke, respiratory, OB, pediatric or neonatal emergencies.

The program maintains a rural focus to help healthcare teams working in rural areas with resources such as specialized equipment that may not be available. They use a team approach for training and real-world practice and advocates a systems-based approach that links healthcare institutions and providers at all levels and stages of

emergency care.

Stacey Lee, JMHS CEO said “This prestigious designation is a testament to JMHS’s dedication to the wellbeing of our community. The CALS process requires a high level of commitment from both staff and providers to meet the stringent criteria for training and involvement, up-to-date technology and evidence of commitment to the CALS principles.”

CALS hospitals are considered leaders in the field. The designation can also enhance recruitment potential it becomes a benchmark for quality training and practice, membership in a community of like-minded institutions and educational opportunities for staff.

The following are also CALS certified, but were not present at the Health Fair for the presentation: Jill Christie (FNP), Julie Olson (PA/FNP), Sue Helgeson (RN), Pam Kloster (RN), Robin Nohrenberg (RN), Kris Gruwell (RN), Maggie Pehrson (RN), Deb Gee (RN), Marilee Landmark (RN), Mary Helgeson (RN), Nicole Stock (LPN) and Cindy Benson (LPN). Jodi Streich (ward secretary) has also been instrumental in this accomplishment by coordinating sending staff to the CALS courses.
