From The Editor Oh Yes! Oh No! Oh Maybe!,

A Call heard used during the past month and though to myself, Oh Yes !! I can use those phrases i~ my column ~ so here they are

Oh Yes! : Well it has been an interesting month and it was great to have visited so many clubs over the past month and wish to thank them all for the friendsh ip that they gave us, I do hope it will not be too long until we are able to meet again. My comments about the rules regarding publishing local events which are to be held on the same dates as a National Convention in another State have obviously hit a spot with you all , I have had comments from many members on this subject and without exception have had complete support on th is item . It is quite clear that it is what you the Dancer wants.

';---';Oh No ! : To Err is Human - To Blame it on someone else is even more Human - well I must not be quite human if that saying is to be correct. The Advert for Carl & Nola Millers Farewell night was placed for two issues and some how I managed to only print it once. For this I offer my humble apologies, however going from the reports that I have received, the night was extremely popular and wel l 'attended so the first advert obviously had the desired effect. .

Oh Maybe! : This is the resp'onse that I have received when asking members if they would be interested in nominating for a position on the General Committee. I hope that these have now turned into a Oh Yes!! as now nominations are closing soon.

This month we welcome back Pine City Twirlers to our Club reports so we can now catch up with the news from that part of the world , Delighted to have you back.

Some very constructive comments have resulted in the Club Dates being made a little easier to follow, thanks for pointing this out, hope its OK now.

Gi<..CPiJl V1(,)JIIClJ

THANK YOU o all fri ends, clubs, callers and dancers for all your good wishes and get well cards

.;ards after my unfortunate accident.

As I do not have many of your personal addresses would you please accept thi s as my -personal thank you. -

success with lots ot tasty choices and crusty breads . The bowling night '--___ --' was great, with Merrilyn nearly going down the gutter and leaving the bal l

We'll be back in our own hall shortly - please phone to confirm the date. Best wishes to birthday girls Val & Heather and happy wedding anniversary to Annette & Colin .

absent and to Shane for taking care of the· hall arrangements. Nice to see a large group of visitors come along on Ron 's night, We wish Charles and Dawn a safe and Happy Holiday.

COL'S CORNER Glen Waverley Caller: Margaret Snyder 98029069 Hi ! It's my pleasure to write the paragraph th is month because our beloved columnist is ' on holiday. Col's Corner is very fortunate Club as you probably noticed, "Corner Cate" is

a professional, she got her degree in journalism when she took up writing

in the late 60's and is currently studying for and advanced degree. She writes for the Free Paper that appears in the Amcal Chemist shops. She gives Square Dancing a nice plug too. She has one problem, she has lost the greater part of her sight and now has to use a "Voice" Compute

Beethoven lost his hearing, Milton his sight and now Betty - whoops 'Cate' is the same. We have great people at Col's Corner. When I saw in February, Victoria's Summertime, the program on Tuesday & Thursday changed. The Dancers took care of the grounds, pets and even did a little dancing. They would dance a bracket, then someone would change places and water the yard or some other odd job around the place.

What would I do without Col 's Corners? I am superfluous. Tea and Coffee are always on time, tables set up for supper, fire stoked , floorboards mended, equipment serviced and dog mothered. Square Dancers are great.

Thanks to our vi siting Callers (Janice & George) wrn helped Janet at the microphone. It was lovely to have the hall real' full, despite the pouring ra in on the nigh. Our Official VSDA representative was Marion, with Adrian also in attendance and Adrian

took to opportunity to congratulate the club on the birthday. The lovely cream birthday cake was also very popular. After the high of the birthday night, we missed our next dance due to the National Convention . Those who made the trip to Sydney sa id it was worthwhile as the convention was most enjoyable. Janet even came back with a few new 'Line Dances' foe us. New beginners are progressing well. Club booki l1g for Tasmanian ~ationa l has been made so we can all be together.

Hello again The (5th Tues) Party went off very well, almost like a break-up night with dancers going off to Sydney and holidays. Elsie once more to be thankea for donating the extra prizes which helped make the night even more enjoyable. The club was closed for two weeks so there is not a lot of news, but we reopen next Tuesday and it will all be on again. Looking forward to hearing all the news from the Convention and all other events. It's so cosy and warm home by the

fire these winter nights, but it's so worth while making the effort to come out dancing, you will have a great time seeing all your friends and catching up with the news. So let us welcome you all to share happy dancing. Our Next 5th Tuesday will be in August Theme Hill Billy. See you by the sea .

Plans are well under way for our 27th Birthday with the theme being "The War Years" (See Advert). Some of our older beginners are dancing club level, some are nearly there and some new beginners have just started.

Happy birthday to Vikki Kelly. This month Bill & Dulcie Hughes have trekked off for a few months up North and are having a great time. By the time this goes to print some of us will have been to Albury for their Birthday. Also some of us are heading over to Chiltern for their regional dance. Our last social event went off well with cards & billiards being played. We have a progressive dinner coming up later in the month and we organised it without telling Stewie Guy that the main course was at his place and Sheryl Price's for sweets. I hope they know now. A relatively short report this month . Congratulations on two fronts this month. Firstly to Julie & David on the birth of Nicholas. An event foreshadowed in last months news. Mother and son are both well and we look forward to seeing them both in the future. Secondly to Glen is & Derek for the way they ~ represented Victoria in the Round Dance Show Case in Sydney. Their presentation of "True Love" certainly went a long way to the outcome of the event with "True Love" being the selected dance by popular ba llot. Last club night we had an overseas vi sitor so to speak - We welcomed Sue Wyatt, The Tasmanian Round Dance teacher who was staying overnight in Melbourne before departing on the "Sprit Of Tasmania". From what we can gather, everything is gearing up fo r a fun National Convention in Tasmania 1996. The seasona l ills are with us and Brenda has a broken wrist, let's hope all are well soon . We will be workshopping Rhumba in the coming month and remember -

Everyone Is Welcome At The Lodge.

FROM THE VSDA PUBLICITY OFFICER Charlie Fry

In th is report I do not have a lot to say, because there is not a lot happen ing at the moment.

A rather sad event took place in Essendon on May 28th . Th is was the clos ing of Carl Miller's Round-a-bout North club. Th is club had been running for about 14 years and was the only club of its type operating in the Northern suburbs . Ria and I attended the last

~night , together with about 80 dancers saying good-bye to Carl and Nola. I feel sure they will be back at a later date.

Th is dance was attended by Ella Whyte and Ray Deamer, who both cued at different times through the night. Together with Carl , they kept the programme moving along very well all night.

To Carl and Nola, all the very best from all members of the V.S.D.A. Committee and take care out there.

The good news for our Northern dancers is that Pat Saunder has started a club in Essendon. Watch the SAV for venues and times.

.~ A visit to the north east of the

state saw us at the Rutherglen W inery Walkabout weekend. The annual Springhurst Square Dance

weekend has been asked to become a part of these celebrations, with a demo in the main street of Rutherglen. Sad ly, this did not take place th is year because of the rather wet weather we had up there.

We stayed at the Tourtel in Springhurst (the old butter factory) and had the best meals imag inable. We also put on about ten pounds each , even with the dancing . The after parties are a highlight of this weekend and some of the dancers partied on until well into the wee small hours of the morn ing . And with these happening on each of the three nights spent there, there is not a lot of sleep had by any of the dancers.

I was also able to call on my sister in Wodonga so was able to take advantage of the excellent road up to that city. It does not take very long to travel to these centres at all these days, with the freeway extending all the way to the border.

Activities coming up are the Hungarian Club demo, better liv ing expo , and the Dandenong Show. A special event to take place on Friday, September 29th IS

a Making The Most Out Of Life expo at Caulfield Race Course, to celebrate Un ited Nations Day for the Elderly. We have been asked to put on a demo at this event. It is being sponsored by the Dept of Arts , Sport and Tourism of Victo ri a.

Don't forget to get yo ur nominations in for the Committee. Send them in to Ria at the address noted in the SAV.

26TH VICTORIAN SQUARE DANCING ASSOCIATION STATE CONVENTION

MARCH 10TH THRU 13TH 1995 KERNOT HALL MORWELL

Firstly , I would like to take this opportunity to thank my sub-committee and your families for a job well done, to you the members of the general committee, Bev, Charl ie, Ria, Sue, Andrew, Darren, Marion, Kevin and Barbara I meant what I said on Sunday evening , thanks for your support over the weekend and for your help doing

~ anything that was required , to your families and spouses go my thanks, their support and help over the weekend was greatly appreciated.

To the program managers Mike, Tony and your assistant Janice along with members of the Victorian CaJlers Association thank you for what was .an interesting and challenging weekend of dancing , most of the feed back I have received since Morwell has been in the positive, the changes in the format to the Sunday afternoon program seem to be well received. People can live with changes so lets not stop now we have started . Remember we have just started to DANCE TOWARDS 2000.

Venue: Kernot Hall was just the right size for the numbers we had and with using the

~ marquee for the refreshment area made for what was a great weekend (I nearly got the weather right for the whole weekend) it just shows I am human, I guess. The use of the Central Gippsland College of TAFE class rooms to house the child minding was a great improvement on past years at Morwell, I believe this has to be continued when ever we return to Morwell . The extra costs were a small price to pay for the kids comfort and parents piece of mind.

Decorations: No matter how good the

25

venue is the Decoration that maketh the atmosphere for the function , To Ray along with his merry band of helpers, the lovely Pam, Bev & Alan Brown, Derek & Glenys Stevenson and last but not least Phi l Poile what can I say, a job wen done, the place looked a treat, the use of the vibrant colours and the lighting really helped make the weekend . To Ray a li ttle piece of information and pra ise, the lighting contractor said it was the first time he had seen someone really use some forethought when design ing the stage decorations, .in his words " It looks great".

Official Opening I Dress Set Parade: What a 9reat success !! !! Judging

by all the reports which have come back, everyone was pleased with the new format. , a little more tuning is still needed. To both Margaret and Warwick Butcher thank you very much for being our official guests over the weekend and a special thanks must go to Warwick for his words of wisdom he spoke during hi s opening address. To Tony and Lee a job well done with your dress set numbers, from where I was on the floor they both danced great.

Convention Sub-Committee: Guys what more can I say but to thank you from the bottom of my heart, to each and everyone of you, along with your spouses you can all hold your heads high , we all worked together to produce what was a class weekend . A job well done, you were part of the sub-committee which organised one of the best run combined funct ions we have had, aga in Thank You

The results of each count shall be recorded on a tally sheet, showing the candidates, number of votes for each and number of informal votes counted. It was passed with one against. The meeting was then closed by the VSDA President.
