LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

2007 ANNUAL REPORT | 1

DEAR LIBRARY SUPPORTERS,

The Sausalito Library Foundation was jumpstarted two years agowith a legacy gift from library stalwart K.T. Kalbfleisch. Generousdonations then came from the Friends of the Library and otherwonderful Sausalitans who understand the importance of a thriving, inviting and widely used library.

This past year we funded a strategic plan that will shape ourlibrary’s direction over the next five years and provide numerousgrant opportunities to enhance our library with community-identifiedinitiatives.We also sponsored the new computer lab, which offersfree class instruction to Sausalito residents on 13 new laptops.

I am grateful for the accomplishments of our board and advisorycouncil members. They have not only managed grants to thelibrary and invested our donors’ gifts, but have also established valuable partnerships with business and community organizations in our city.

You will note that we have a growing group of individual partners who value our library and the work of the Foundation. We invite new donors to join us.

We are pleased with what the Foundation has accomplishedwith the support of so many. I hope you share our enthusiasm andenjoy reading about our progress.

FOUNDATION PARTNERS

OUR ALLIANCES with Sausalito businesses and organizations have strengthened our community ties and helped build theFoundation’s assets. We salute and thank our strategic partners who recognize the importance of a strong library as a tangiblecommunity asset.Their donations and ongoing commitment to the Foundation are greatly appreciated.

The Friends of the Library have been the library’s most ardent partner for decades.Their ongoing financialassistance each year in the form of “wish-list fulfillment”

supports the library’s immediate needs and short-term projects.TheFriends have also made generous contributions to the Foundationfrom profits generated by their three-day-a-week book sales. We’remost fortunate to have such Friends.

The owners and brokers of the Sausalito Office of FrankHoward Allen have chosen to share their success with

the Foundation. Each time an FHA agent assists in a Sausalito salestransaction, a portion of his or her commission is donated to theFoundation. We salute their sustained commitment to our library.

The Sausalito Art Festival, through its community grant program, donated part of the funding that fueled thelibrary’s new computer lab.We appreciate their support.

The Sausalito Lions Club has demonstrated its supportof the library through a generous donation to theFoundation Fund.

2007 ANNUAL REPORT | 7

IN THE SPRING OF 2004 , led by President K.T. Kalbfleisch, theFriends of the Library rallied key community members to create the Centennial Fund campaign. Sadly, K.T. died in the fall of 2004.She would have been gratified to learn that by the time the librarycelebrated its 100th year in 2006, tireless volunteers and generousdonors had raised enough money to sustain library services andcollections during the period of severe City budget cuts.

In the same generous spirit that fueled her fund-raising effortswhile living, K.T. named the Friends of the Library as a major beneficiary of her estate. In 2006 the Sausalito Library Foundationwas established as a tax-exempt, nonprofit corporation. Its purpose:to provide financial support for the Sausalito Library for special projects, to supplement programs and services funded by the City, and to help provide stability in the future. K.T.’s bequest was transferred from the Friends to the Foundation, establishing a cornerstone for this revenue source that continues to grow.

THE HISTORY OF OUR LEGACY

8 | SAUSALITO LIBRARY FOUNDATION

SAUSALITO LIBRARY STRATEGIC PLAN

In early 2007 it became apparent to the Sausalito Library Board ofTrustees that in order to expand, deepen, and diversify the Library’sconnection to the community, a long-range plan was needed toguide resource allocation and to best use financial support from thenewly formed Foundation and from the Friends.

The Trustees selected volunteers from the community to serveon a Strategic Planning Committee and recommended hiring aconsultant to lead the planning process. The Foundation agreed tounderwrite the services of Ruth Metz, a consultant experiencedwith library strategic planning, to guide the planning process.

The Committee met periodically from September 2007 throughMarch 2008 to create a long-range plan based on significant community input. It was endorsed by the Trustees and presented tothe Sausalito City Council in April 2008.This plan will be a flexibleblueprint to help staff prioritize resources and activities during thenext five years, and it will guide the Foundation’s future grant-making decisions. Copies of the plan are available in the library andon the library’s Web page.

FOUNDATION PROJECTS

One of the library’s strategic plangoals is to focus on programs andmaterials for Sausalito’s youngest residents. Shown here are Lisa Bairwith her children Brody and Ellie, already loyal library patrons.

SAUSALITO LIBRARY COMPULAB

Together with grants from the Sausalito Art Festival and FrankHoward Allen–Sausalito, the Foundation underwrote the purchaseof 13 laptop computers, a color network printer, a computer projector and related equipment to create the Sausalito LibraryCompuLab taught by librarians AugieWebb and Lindsay Wyatt. The grants also pay for technical support and for the hiring of other instructors in the future.

The CompuLab provides free group instruction in computerskills and online resources to Sausalito residents and has enjoyed full enrollment since its inaugural class in October 2007.Two of the laptops will soon be available for public use during regularlibrary hours.
