NEW DELHI, Oct 24:Despite the bitterness in
Indo-Pak ties, Pakistan has sent'Diwali sweets' to PresidentPranab Mukherjee and PrimeMinister Narendra Modi.
The sweets, by Pakistan
High Commissioner Abdul Basitand his wife, were also sent toExternal Affairs MinisterSushma Swaraj.
According to sources, Basitsent the boxes to the PrimeMinister's Office for Modi apartfrom the President and theExternal Affairs Minister andseemed an "initiative" taken total-ly at the High Commission level.
Significantly, Indian forceshave not offered sweets to theirPakistani counterparts on Diwali inthe wake of repeated ceasefire vio-lations by Pakistan along the border.
The Border Security Force(BSF) in Punjab and Jammu andKashmir did not exchangesweets and greetings, a goodwillgesture carried out during majoroccasions, especially festivalslike Diwali and Eid.
"In the light of present scenario
with Pakistan, this time India hasdecided not to offer sweets toPakistan on Diwali," Jalandhar-based BSF IG, Punjab Frontier,Ashok Kumar said over phone.
There were repeated cease-fire violations by Pakistan alongLoC as well as InternationalBorder in J&K recently, he said, adding, therefore, offering ofsweets to Pakistani counterpartswas "totally out of question".
"This Diwali we did notexchange sweets with thePakistani side following theheightened tension along theInternational Border," a seniorBSF officer said in Jammu.
The Army also did not holdany function along the Line ofControl and no sweets wereexchanged with the Pakistanitroops. (PTI)
NEW DELHI, Oct 24:
Two days ahead of a plannedrally in London by a pro-Pakistan group on Kashmirissue, India today warned thatforces inimical to Indo-UK rela-tions may utilise such opportuni-ty in open societies.
However, it appreciatedBritain's stand that the Kashmirissue was to be resolved only byIndia and Pakistan and said thatwith this reassurance theGovernment was "quite com-fortable" of any march beingorganised.
External Affairs Ministryspokesperson Syed Akbaruddindownplayed the 'Million March',being organised on Sunday, say-ing India was a country of morethan a billion and millions don't"overawe" it.
"Now it is possible thatforces inimical to India-UK rela-tions may utilise opportuinities
of this sort and it was in thiscontext that we discussued withUK and we were reassuredrepeatedly that the UK's view isvery clear and that it is for Indiaand Pakistan to resolve any issuethat they have by themselves.
"With that reassurance, weare quite comfortable of anymarch being organised, be it theso-called million march becausewe, as I said, are country of abillion. Millions do not overaweus....," he said.
External Affairs MinisterSushma Swaraj had raised withDeputy Prime Minister of BritainNick Clegg organisation of theplanned anti-India march duringher visit to London last week.
The "Million March" isplanned on October 26 fromLondon's Trafalgar Square tohighlight the Kashmir issue.
Asked about Pakistan parlia-ment passing a resolution yester-day against the alleged "unpro-
voked and indiscriminate"ceasefire violations by India andseeking UN intervention toresolve the Kashmir issue, thespokesperson said it was aimedat the domestic audience andthat India opposed the option ofinvolvement of any third partyon the matter.
"Resolutions passed byParliaments are...Internalisationprocesses. Therefore, why shouldwe have any problem with anyinternalisation process in anycountry? This is for that country totake a view on," he said, addingIndia was strongly opposed tointernationalising the issue.
"As regards to any issue ofinternational nature, we havegiven our views on that we do notsee any option of any third partybe involved in this. Therefore, asfar as internationalisation is con-cerned, we are against it. As far asinternalisation is concerned, thisis for Pakistan to sort itself out,"the Spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said Indiawas ready for talks withPakistan under the provisions ofShimla Agreement and LahoreDeclaration but it was for thatcountry to create a conduciveatmosphere for dialogue.
"Our view is that it is forPakistan to enter into a situationwhere we can have an atmos-phere conducive for talks. Therefore, our view is very clearthat we are ready for a bilateraldialogue under the Shimlaagreement and the Lahore decla-ration. But that requires anatmosphere which is conducivefor talks. The ball, therefore, isin Pakistan's court," he said.
To another question on infor-mation on the blast in Burdwan,as was sought by BangladeshGovernment, the MEAspokesperson said the ministryhas requested concerned agen-cies to collate information andwas awaiting a report in thisregard.(PTI)
