Stephen Watson Stephen Watson was born in New Brunswick in 1958 and although he did not live there long the allure of the green pine forests he explored as a child and the mystery of the ocean captured his fascination and respect. Living in Ontario as a young man, Stephen was continually drawn to expressing his creativity through what most people would call “doodling”, a meandering of themes and images that would eventually fill entire spaces of a drawing board. These early works are fascinating as they continually reveal images to the viewer the longer they gaze at the piece and the detail and complexity are captivating. As a self-taught artist he slowly began to explore other mediums and eventually found his way to acrylic paints on canvas. He loved the bright, vivid and contrasting colours he could have with using acrylic and the larger the canvas the better. Throughout his years as an artist, Stephen continually returned to the theme of our vanishing natural spaces and the depletion of our oceans. His art was no longer an aesthetic image alone but a means to show a message he wanted the viewer to understand. In fact, Stephen has donated many pieces to help raise funds for the organization his brother started, The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, to in the best way he could, contribute to the cause of conserving our planet and ultimately ourselves. His underwater themes were among his most recent pieces and it was through these works that he was able to combine his love for detail and his love for the known and imagined elements beneath the surface. On June 12 of this year Stephen was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. He passed away August 30th during a trip back to his home province, coming in a way, full circle. So now the brushes are cleaned, the palette is cleared and the painting is drying waiting for the viewer to see and understand.

J.C. Olivier My inspiration comes from the earth we see around us every day, the people we interact with and the emotions we feel. As a child, I was exposed to the world of visual art and developed my knack for creation. Later, I studied visual art at the Montage Art School then began to experiment with different mediums and applications and developed a love for oil painting. But I’m also exploring the world of digital photography and metal sculpture. For more info see: www.intuitivecomposition.com

Richard Sturgeon Largely self-taught as an artist, Richard Sturgeon is a dedicated professional sculptor whose work has been exhibited in top level North American shows and competitions and can be found in private and public collections around the world. From handheld studies to large-scale installations, through deliberate employment of balance and tension, the work simultaneously conveys an air of both weightlessness and grounding. “The essence of my work lies in breaking form into its most basic and necessary lines, revealing the purist of attitudes and emotions of a sculpture. I’m drawn to the methods of sculpting metal, where sometimes harsh industrial processes performed on a cold and rigid medium can yield an air of elegance, softness and beauty.” More of Richard’s work can be seen at: www.metalinfusion.com

David Hérbert Half self-taught and half schooled, David (André Abraham) Hébert was born in Montréal in 1976. “When I open myself up to the creative process a piece, of the unseen touches me and the results are beyond what I could create out of my own mind and ego. They humble me.” David paints in acrylics, oil on canvas, mixed-media on canvas, painted wood, 3-D wall-hung painted aluminium panels and murals. For more info see: www.daahstudio.weebly.com

Al Magrath

Al Magrath is a self-taught London-based artist who lives in Old South London. He uses a variety of media, including acrylics, watercolours, inks, pastels and charcoal. His work is distinctive for its simple imagery, tonal subtleties and mastery of colour. David Lindsay David is one of our original resident artists, and has been enjoying his space on the second floor since 2000. An admirer of Cézanne, Matisse, Warhol and Hockney, his main influences originate in 1950’s movies and comic books. While growing up, his family moved quite often and his work reflects a certain nostalgia, a wish for things to be frozen in time.

Steve Tracy Steve was born in Santa Clara, California, in 1953. He was given his first set of oil paints at the age of 10 and quickly discovered that art could free him from the chaos of everyday life. Steve embraced the cultural revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He relocated to SoHo, New York City, where he worked at Robert Mapplethorpe’s studio, met Andy Warhol, and lived next door to John Lennon and Yoko Ono. He also found time

to study jazz, French and art, attending New York’s School of Visual Art and preparing canvases for American masters Lowell Nesbitt and Deborah Remington. In 2007, Steve completed a special commission for the Hemingway Museum in Oak Park, Illinois. His paintings also hang in many corporate collections, including Cirque du Soleil, Microsoft, Apple, Kaiser Permanente of Northern California and Bank of America. Sue Laking

Sue has been expressing herself through her art for most of her life. Classically trained at Fanshawe College’s 4-year Fine Arts program (1990), Sue has never confined herself to one style, medium or message. Her art and techniques continue to evolve and grow as she herself does. She is as comfortable with highly detailed surrealist pen-and-ink drawings as she is with equally detailed realism burned into wood, painted on a canvas, or as a wall mural. She is both a professional tattoo artist and home stager.

David Dockstader

David Dockstader is a Native artist who has been painting for over 26 years and has shown his work to a wide audience. Having studied art at Fanshawe College over 20 years ago, Dockstader put down his brushes to work and raise a family, but never lost his passion for painting.

The pieces are unique and recognizable: only yellow and tones of grey are used. Informed by dreams and Native spirituality, Dockstader paints a fantasy world in acrylic on large canvases. The work is left untitled so the viewer can decide what the painting is “about”.

Sarah Kane Sarah is a self-taught artist working to produce a collection of themes through escapism by striving to bridge the divide between dream and reality. Sarah’s admiration for dark and dreamy representations of life has brought her work to the forefront of her career. She seeks to bring together the essence of acrylic’s candid movement with graphite’s scripted monologue of dark and light. With careful thought and planning, Sarah researches every theme until they eventuate into a visual collective. Spending every waking moment immersed in some form of art, through our modern chaos, she is constantly trying to create a body of work that will glimmer in this sea of gems we call the art world. Pat Chisholm Born in London Ontario Pat began drawing at a very young age and by seven years old she was able to draw human figures with proper proportion and accuracy. Taught by her mother who was also a good artist Pat always knew she wanted to be an artist. She started out in illustrated arts and eventually moved into fine art. Pat works in pastels and acrylics her subjects include landscapes, portraits/people, abstracts and super realism. She has sold privately for many years but has only recently began exhibiting her work to a wider audience.

David Strauss

David follows a continuum of research, defining his style through the use of mixed media. He creates simplistic and abstract collages of randomly selected images that allude to a moment in time, like a series of thoughts, an idea or pattern of ideas. Each thought is a single frame within the memory. A mental image or impression of a past event, something learned, an emotion or feeling. His work is composed primarily through found images. Each image is chosen based on a minimalist set of criteria. A single image provides the foundation, which is layered with other images in a geometric fashion to produce a simplified visual composition.

Scott McKay

Scott McKay began his iron experience as a millwright constructing feed mills and eventually working in factories. Over time, the monotony of repetitive servitude pushed Scott to begin doing creative things with the waste iron parts that surrounded him. On night shifts he would weld these into creatures. As time progressed, there was a need to modify the steel further. He learned the traditional methods of blacksmithing at the Haliburton School of the Arts. Now Scott works full time out of his studio west of London, completing sculptural and decorative art pieces. Working mostly on commissions, hard work is rewarded with time to play with the steel. Having the skills to turn a dead and cold medium into an expressive and flowing form is a reward like no other. More of Scott’s work can be seen at: www.strongarmforge.com

Angie Quick

Angie Quick is a self-taught painter. She was born in 1989 in Calgary, Alberta. She has had two solo shows, “Ekstasis” and “Why We Pray Alone”. She creates large oil paintings, blown glass vessels, and large sculptures. Her work is a marriage of logic and faith, wild passion within structured domains, and a straight line decomposing into reckless ecstasy. Her works deal in an encyclopaedia of symbolism, that is, beautiful women, an excess of flora, fabric and a good deal of coupling. More of Angie Quick’s work can be seen at her website: www.angievquick.com

Jesse Gledhill

G. Jesse Gledhill is a self-taught realist. He has exhibited in many solo shows. Jesse has also participated in innumerable juried and non-juried group exhibitions throughout the province including winning prizes in national competitions. Very often Jesse uses the human figure to portray his desired effect.

Other times he employs either animal or inanimate objects making them animate. All his work has an emotive quality to it. Jesse has passed the jury selection to become a member of the Ontario Society of Artists, The Society of Canadian Artists, the Portrait Society of Canada and the Art Renewal Center. More of Jesse’s work can be seen at the Art Renewal Center’s website: www.artrenewal.org
