The Shetland Islands are well known for their unique fi ddle tradition which dates back hundreds of years, infl uenced by Scandanavian and Scottish styles. The tunes carry a distinctive rhythm with a repertoire of older melodies, as well as many more modern compositions by the likes of Shetland musicians Tom Anderson and Ronnie Cooper in the 1980s, to Ross Couper and Chris Stout more recently. With the Shetland community spread over 100 islands and almost 100 miles north to south, regional styles developed giving rise to association of some tunes with particular areas of Shetland. With the introduction of traditional fi ddle lessons in Shetland’s schools in the early 1980s, primarily due to the determination of player, teacher and historian Dr Tom Anderson to preserve a fading tradition, the popularity of fi ddle remains strong in Shetland today, with many young players continuing to emerge.

While the Shetland fi ddle tradition was once only to be heard local houses, or community gatherings, in more recent times Shetland fi ddle players have graced stages worldwide, working as professional musicians and generating new found interest in Shetland tunes. Such names include Aly Bain, Jenna Reid, Chris Stout and Catriona Macdonald.

Fiddle Frenzy offers the unique opportunity to learn the tunes and style of this unique tradition within the Shetland Islands themselves. Isolated far off the north east coast of Scotland, and as close to Norway, Shetland is famed also for Fair Isle knitting, ponies, puffi ns, geology, archeology, beautiful sandy beaches and landscapes, offering a rich experience of culture and history which we encourage our students to explore.

Eunice is one of Shetland’s full time

traditional fi ddle teachers in schools,

having worked in the role since 1991. She

also leads, instructs and accompanies

an extremely successful and energetic

young fi ddle group – The South Mainland

Young Fiddlers – which rehearses and

performs regularly. Eunice has also taught

for a number of years at the annual Orkney

Traditional Music Project, with a focus on

Shetland and Norwegian fi ddle tunes. She

also performs with local bands Birls Aloud

and Ceilidh Pukkels.

Jenna grew up in Burra, Shetland and was a pupil of the late Dr Tom Anderson. She was one of the youngest winners of Shetland’s Young Fiddler of the Year at age 11. Now based in Orkney, where she works as a music teacher, Jenny has also established youth fi ddle groups, and performs both as a fi ddler and singer. She performs as a duo with fellow tutor, Brian Cromarty, having released their fi rst album to great acclaim in 2014.

Andrew started to play the fi ddle whilst

growing up in Orkney, and moved on to

lessons with the late Willie Hunter when

he moved to Shetland aged eight. He is

a member of Shetland fi ddle supergroup

Fiddlers’ Bid. Andrew used to go to the

famous Lounge Bar as a youngster to watch

and learn from musicians such as Peerie

Willie Johnson and Bogey Dalziel, as well

as getting to join in with visiting musicians

from around the world. Exposure to a range

of instruments and styles led Andrew to an

interest in many musical styles, and as a

result he has played in bands performing

bluegrass, electronica, jazz, and rock music.

Alan has played the fi ddle since the age of 7 and was a strings instructor in Shetland Schools for 15 years until he retired three years ago. He still however has a number of private pupils. Music in some form or other has always been an important part of his life and especially working with young players. He plays fi ddle with Da Fustra who recently won the title of Scottish Dance Band of the Year.

A skilled multi-instrumentalist, she also excels on the fi ddle, mandolin and tenor banjo. Renowned for her work with Blazin’ Fiddles and Mairearad Green, the past few years have also seen Anna perform with her own band, Bella Hardy, Julie Fowlis, Kate Rusby, Karen Matheson, Capercaillie and Eddi Reader.

Workshops in traditional guitar accompaniment are also available at Fiddle Frenzy. We run one class of mixed ability across the week. Kris Drever’s voice and guitar forms part of the backbone of today’s contemporary roots scene. Widely admired as a solo artist, collaborator, and member of folk superstars Lau, he is a phenomenal and prolifi c artist.

Becoming ‘Best Newcomer’ at the 2007 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards was a beginning of sorts for the Orcadian singer-songwriter, however, his journey was already far from its musical origins: growing up on Orkney brought its own inspirations, but somewhat inevitably, it was his father, Ivan Drever, of folk-rockers Wolfstone, who fi rst sparked Kris’s imagination – just like Dad, he turned to the guitar to power his melodies, and found himself involved in jam sessions far and wide.

Now living in Shetland, Kris will be joined by a collection of musical friends from the islands.

Andrew Gifford & Grant Nicol will also perform. Andrew is a member of Shetland fi ddle supergroup Fiddlers’ Bid, who have performed together for over 20 years and continue to play around the world. Andrew has performed solo at Fiddle Frenzy previously and is always a delight to listen to with a varied mix of traditional tunes, including some of this own compositions. He will be accompanied by guitarist Grant Nicol of Fullsceilidh Spelemanslagg and Haltadans.
