 Master Class Offerings 

  While some of the 2016 master classes will be held on‐site at the University of California, Riverside, Palm Desert Extension facility, others will take place off‐site.  Master class participants are expected to provide their own transportation to and from all venues.  There is a $50 fee for each class payable with registration or at the conference for classes that may still available.  The only exception to this is the Friday evening Paper Sculpture master class #6, which is $15/session. Materials fees and any entrance fees are to be paid directly to the instructor or to the facility upon entrance to a site location.     SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2016   

 Master Class #7: Making Art with Text and Brushes in Photoshop Elements  9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Instructor: Pat Kodet On­Site:   UCR‐Palm Desert Facility  This class will define brushes and patterns, and participants will delve into the preset panels for brush variations working with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements programs.  Photoshop Elements is a lighter version of Photoshop, but it gets better every year. $79.99 Costco.  No experience necessary, but you will need your laptop 

with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements installed.  MATERIALS TO BRING: laptop with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements installed MATERIALS FEE: None/CLASS LIMIT: 16  About Pat:  Patricia Kodet taught art for the Pleasant Ridge School District and the Auburn School District for over 12 years and taught after school programs in art for 15 years.  She is member of CAEA and NAEA and now teaches teachers art and Photoshop in addition to teaching Abstract Design & Color at Venus Studios Art Supply in Palm Desert.  Pat is a full‐time resident in the Coachella Valley where she has volunteered for two art boards.  During 2016, Pat has exhibited at Saguaro in Palm Springs, the Palm Springs Airport Museum, UCR Palm Desert, the Historical Society of Palm Desert, and Venus Studios in Palm Desert.  

 

 Master Class #8: Textures for Painting  9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Instructor: Kathleen Scoggin Off­Site:   Venus Studios 44850 Las Palmas Ave Suite C in the Village Complex, Palm Desert, next door to Venus Studio Art Supply  This workshop will focus on creating various types of texture on paper, canvas or board using acrylic and acrylic inks. You may use watercolor if you wish. Design and Composition will be explored as part of the process.  From these texture starts, abstract or more realistic paintings will be developed.  You will learn how to incorporate the new techniques into your own painting style.   MATERIALS TO BRING: None MATERIALS FEE: $10/CLASS LIMIT: 15  About  Kathleen:  Kathleen  Scoggin  is  an  award‐winning  artist  who  enjoys abstracting  organic  subjects  to  create  complex  and  curious  pieces  full  of  texture. Much of her work is inspired by nature, and often her paintings show the conflict of man and nature.   Her work has been exhibited  in numerous  juried  shows  in Palm Springs  and Oregon.    Kathleen’s  coursework  includes  classes  in  Fine  Arts,  Design 

and Art History at Portland State University  and Oregon State University,  and  she has attended numerous workshops from nationally‐recognized artists.  She has been a water media class and workshop instructor and is a member of several art boards.  

  Master Class #9: Make Your Art: The Art of Brush Making  2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Instructor: Glenn Grishkoff On­Site:   UCR Palm Desert Facility  This is an exclusive hands‐on workshop with internationally renowned ceramic artist and brushmaker Glenn Grishkoff.  These are no ordinary brushes, but exquisite works of art!  During this three hour workshop, you will work with Glenn making 3‐4 handmade brushes ideal for ink or watercolor, ceramic applications, batik to cloth surfaces, acrylic and oil painting on canvas.  Students will explore various sizes, tips from small to large, and unique handle construction methods. A slide lecture and demonstration will highlight techniques including knot tying, epoxy mixing, cutting and wrapping hairs and methods to create brush handles. Participants will work with bucktail hair, moose hair, rooster hackle, broomcorn straw and other types of hair. All materials will be provided. A “what students can bring list” is available to students before the workshop starts to help them personalize their brushes! To view Glenn’s own artwork and to watch a video of a recent brush making workshop, visit his website at http://www.glenngrishkoff.com/  MATERIALS TO BRING: None at this time MATERIALS FEE: $15/CLASS LIMIT: 20 

About Glenn: Glenn Grishkoff has conducted workshops for the past 20 years and is a former professor of ceramics and sculpture at several prestigious institutions.  He earned a BFA from California State Fullerton and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University. Since 1995, his national and international reputation as a brushmaker has landed him residencies in South Africa, Japan and Thailand and collaborations with the Oscar winning designer Coleen Atwood and renowned ceramic artists Paul Soldner and Peter Voulkos. In 2008 he was awarded the Idaho Commission on the Arts Fellowship and is represented by The Art Spirit Gallery in Coeur d’Alene, ID and Ochi Projects Gallery, Los Angeles, CA.  

  Master Class #10: Printmaking with a Pin­Press and Akua Inks  2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Instructor: Charlie Ciali Off­Site:   Venus Studios 44850 Las Palmas Ave Suite C in the Village Complex, Palm Desert, next door to Venus Studio Art Supply  Work with Akua Inks by Speedball certified instructor Charlie Ciali and learn how to use the Akua pin‐press to create monotype prints.   The pin press is a portable way to print‐make without the use of heavy printmaking equipment.  Using non‐toxic materials the master class will demonstrate the use of Akua ink, modifiers and different printing techniques.  Participates will be working with plates ranging in size from 8”x10” and smaller.  Each participant will have his/her own inks in which to work, as well as all the tools necessary for making original monotypes.  MATERIALS TO BRING: None MATERIALS FEE: $15/CLASS LIMIT: 15  About Charlie: Charlie Ciali received his B.F.A. degree in Ceramic Arts from Daemen College, Amherst NY  in 1978 followed by graduate studies at Edinboro University, Edinboro PA.  He was the Assistant Director for MC Fine Arts Gallery in Minneapolis and  subsequently  opened  his  own  gallery,  Perspectives,  which  specialized  in  fine American Crafts and represented works by leading glass and ceramic artists. Charlie considers himself to be a mixed media artist who explores how different mediums work with each other. Today his works are primarily in monotype printmaking and encaustic  painting,  which  he  often  combines  into  a  singular work.    In  addition  to Speedball,  he  is  a  certified  instructor  for  Enkaustikos,  one  of  the  leading manufacturers of encaustic supplies.  He has also created printmaking programs for middle  and  high‐school  students  and  is  a  mentor  for  the  Arts  Institute  of  Palm Springs High School where he has  served as  the board president. Charlie has also served as a Public Arts Commissioner for the City of Palm Springs, President of the Friends of the Arts Institute at Palm Springs High School and President of the Artists Council  at  the  Palm  Springs  Art  Museum.  His  work  may  be  found  in  numerous private  and  public  collections  around  the  world.    For  more  information  and  a complete list of workshops please visit Charlieciali.com.  

  Master Class #11: Wheel­throwing and Hand­building with Colored Porcelain  2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Instructor: Daric Harvie Off­Site:   Silica Studios 752 S. Williams Road Palm Springs  Participants in this workshop will learn several techniques in the art of Neriage, also known as Agateware. This is the use of two or more contrasting colored clays to throw or hand build pottery.  The workshop will include the following: 

• Preparing colored clay and different clay bodies; • Slab constructing and wheel throwing demonstrations; • Discussion on firing and glazing colored clay work. 

Participants will have the opportunity to create a piece to keep, which will be fired and shipped at a later date.  MATERIALS TO BRING: None MATERIALS FEE: $15/CLASS LIMIT: 15  About Daric: Daric Harvie began working with clay in 1991 at College of the Desert and then received his B.F.A. in Ceramics in 1996 from Long Beach State. There he studied with Tony Marsh and Yuh Sun Koo.  Post­graduation, Daric began teaching in both public and private school settings and continues to teach beginning to advanced lessons.  In 2003 he co‐founded Silica Studios, a premier ceramics studio and gallery located in Palm Springs, CA.  Daric’s art is both functional and sculptural. He is known for his use of mixed clay bodies, clean lines and abstract shapes, forms and textures. He is inspired by the natural landscapes of the Southern California Deserts.  "I love the process and possibilities that clay brings. When beauty and function come together, it is a wonderful thing."
