BETH DAVID IS PROUDLY AFFILIATED WITH THE URJ - UNION FOR REFORM JUDAISM.
WORSHIP SCHEDULE
Community Shabbat Saturday, January 12, 2019
9:30am Religious School in Session 9:30am Adult Learning - Between Tradition and Innovation: Shabbat Music in Istanbul with Joseph Alpar. Based on recent years of fieldwork with synagogue cantors in Istanbul and their congregants, this talk will uncover the connections between Ottoman Turkish and Judeo-Spanish musical traditions, and more recent East European and Israeli influences. Joseph Alpar will discuss and share live musical examples of Shabbat music-making at contemporary Istanbul synagogues.
10:30am Services - Students will help to lead the service
12:00pm - Shabbat Brunch
Joseph Alpar is a doctoral candidate in ethnomusicology at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, and an adjunct professor at the Boyer College of Music at Temple University, who has also taught locally at Swarthmore College. The founder and director of Philadelphia-based Sephardic music ensemble, David’s Harp, Joseph is an accomplished singer and instrumentalist of Turkish, Greek, and Middle Eastern music. He plays santouri (a hammered zither from Greece) darbuka (goblet drum), and bağlama (a long-necked Turkish lute) among other instruments.

From Louis Bricklin - President’s Message Happy New Year! I hope it is a happy and healthy one for each of you. When I sit down to write this column each month, I find myself debating: do I write something really serious and hopefully profound, or do I play the role of “cheerleader in chief” - making you aware of everything going on at Beth David and what we have to offer? Both could serve a purpose: making you think and, also, making you think about Beth David. Trying to tie the two together, however, is no easy task. But I’m going to give it a try. Here’s the cheerleading part. Please put on your calendars right now two important upcoming dates. On Saturday evening, March 2, members of our community will be opening their homes to all of us to host us for “Homestyle” dinner. All but our new members probably recall how this works. About a dozen of our members agree to host dinner for guests from our community. If you are not a host, you sign up to attend one of the dinners. You get to meet some folks from Beth David you’ve likely never met before, together with some you have, you have a wonderful dinner served by your hosts, and a great time is had by all. By the way, if you would like to host -- and we would love it if you would – please contact one of our Homestyle organizers:
We also have a “family homestyle” the same evening in the Social Hall, where families with younger children can attend, meet,
do some less formal dining and watch a movie or other entertainment. By the time you read this, you may already have received your invitation by email. Please make plans to attend. The family Homestyle is free. There is a charge for the adult Homestyle that helps defray the cost of the family gathering and, also, raise a little money for the synagogue. Second, our annual congregational fundraiser will be held at Beth David on the night of Saturday, April 6. Plans are still being finalized but the general outlines are set. It will include a catered dinner, pop entertainment from Cantor Lauren and Pavel (our super-talented musicians in residence), a raffle and auction, all with great prizes. And we’re trying something new this year: members of the community whose children are either in the religious school grades K – 6 or pre-school are invited to attend free of charge. We will handle their attendance financially from sponsorships we intend to sell. So please, everyone, put that date on your
calendar now: Saturday, April 6. So where’s the “serious and profound” part? Here it is. Both Homestyle and our fundraiser do help close the operating gap in our budget. But that’s not the principal reason we do them. We offer Homestyle and the fundraiser (and Community Shabbats and Purim Schpiels and school trips to Linvilla Orchards and Teen Trips and everything else we do) to help to create a community that cares for and about each other. Some of you may note that I rarely use the word “congregation” either in these letters or when I speak to you in person. A congregation is “an assembly of persons or an organized body of believers in a particular location” (according to Merriam-Webster). I’ve spoken to enough of you to know that not all of us “believe” and certainly we all don’t believe in the same thing in the same way. But a community, according to the same source, is “a unified body of individuals,” especially “an interacting population of various kinds of individuals in a common location.” That’s where I see Beth David heading. Core values unite us and one of those core values is connecting with those around us to make their lives – and ours – better. When we gather in community for Homestyle, a fundraiser or on other occasions, we connect. We unite. We care. Please join us.

At the Beit Midrash, we will be studying the essential questions of Judaism from different rabbinic perspectives. We will be looking at the role of evil in our world, the question of whether God can fit into a modern and scientific outlook, beliefs about human souls, ethical values, and more. This class is discussion-based.
This is open to all women at Beth David, whether you have been before or not.

Positive Judaism: How the Modern Science of Happiness Echoes Ancient Jewish Wisdom, with Alison Deutsch & Cantor Lauren Goodlev
Positive Psychology is the scientific study of the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive. Join Cantor Goodlev, who wrote her undergraduate thesis at the University of Pennsylvania with the founder of Positive Psychology, Dr. Martin Seligman, in conversation with Beth David member and positive psychology practitioner Alison Deutsch. The conversation will focus on the latest research on happiness. Discover how the path to a more meaningful life has always been embodied in the extraordinary wisdom of Jewish text and prayers.
Beth David member Alison Deutsch, CiPP, CiHS, CPC, ELI-MP, is a Certified Positive Psychology Practitioner and Certified Personal Development Coach who helps women navigate midlife with more joy, and assists people with chronic pain to minimize suffering and accelerate healing. The intersection of the science of positive psychology and the wisdom of our sages is a personal passion she loves to share.
CANTOR LILIA KAZANSKY MUSICIAN-IN-RESIDENCE
Naomi Less Saturday night, February 23 & Sunday morning, February 24
The Music and the Torah and the Story that Connects Us All
On Saturday night, come say goodbye to Shabbat and greet the new week with a soulful Havdallah followed by an acoustic vibe concert, led by internationally renowned, Jewish Chick Rock sensation Naomi Less, who will be joined by her other musicians to play original music about Jewish identity, gender, Torah, values and Israel.
Then on Sunday morning, Naomi will conduct adult and family programming, which will include Storahtelling: a unique method of integrating Judaism’s oldest form of sacred storytelling with contemporary stagecraft. Join us to see how storahtelling makes ancient stories and traditions accessible for new generations, advancing Judaic literacy and raising social consciousness.

Beth David Wants You to Join the Conversation
In January, Rabbi Kalisch and Cantor Goodlev are offering two conversations for Beth David parents to get to know each other more deeply, and to get parent feedback on a new initiative, Sh’ma Beth David, about building meaningful relationships among our families. While a dozen of these meetings are happening in members’ homes this winter, we’re hosting two conversations specifically for Religious School parents, during part of Religious School on January 6 and on January 27, and we would love for you to join one of them! Participation is limited to keep the groups small enough for real conversation. Log onto our website, and click the Sh’ma Think Tank button on the upper right hand corner to learn more about these Sh’ma Think Tank gatherings and to sign up. Note the sessions specifically reserved for you, Beth David Parents with Kids at Home!!

Around Beth David
In 1991 Beth David was one of the organizing congregations of the Interfaith Hospitality Network of the Main Line. Beth David is now one of twelve houses of worship, and the only synagogue, to participate in this work. The program is comprised of congregations that provide the following inside their houses of worship: shelter, meals, and guidance to families who find themselves temporarily homeless. Up to four guest families live at Beth David for one week, approximately every 12 weeks. During that time about 50 volunteers provide food for breakfast, lunch, and snacks, prepare the meal and join the IHN guests for dinner, stay over at Beth David with the guests, assist children with homework if needed, and generally create a safe and comfortable place for families going through a difficult time. Volunteers are always welcome.
OUR NEXT HOSTING WEEK IS JANUARY 13-20
