Simanim: A Yamim Noraim Message by Rabbi Simcha Hopkovitz

On the night of Rosh Hashana there is an almost universal custom of eating various symbolic foods. Best known among these, are dipping the first piece of challah into honey and afterwards, a piece of apple dipped into honey. This custom is based on the Talmudic teaching: Abaye taught - Now that you have said that an omen is significant at the start of the year each person should habituate himself to eat pumpkin, fenugreek, leeks, beets, and dates. (There are other varying customs and traditions.) The commentaries note that some of these foods are sweet and therefore symbolize a sweet year. Other foods grow in abundance and indicate an abundance of merits. Some of these foods symbolize an increase in performance of good deeds and others allude to destruction and eradication of our enemies and sins. Perhaps one could suggest the Simanim's greatest influence is found in the very wording of the Talmud. Abaye had taught that at the beginning of the year, a person should habituate himself to eat these foods. Our greatest desire on Rosh Hashana and throughout the entire Yamim Noraim is that Hashem bestow upon us, our families and friends, a year of health, blessing, and prosperity. We strive to do teshuvah and improve our mitzvah performance. It seems, the greatest and most significant omen would be for us to make our teshuvah and improvement a habit, like Abaye taught in the Talmud. Let us habituate ourselves this coming year to an improvement in our mitzvos bein adam l'Makom and bein adam l'chaveiro, and may Hashem inscribe us all together with our families, friends and community for a .

THE HARRIET & JULIUS WISHIK KIDDUSH FUND

Five years ago before the holiday of Sukkos, Harriet Wishik, whose dedication and service to the Queens Jewish Center was boundless, passed away very suddenly, and The Harriet Wishik Kiddush Fund was named to honor her memory. Having regular Kiddushim on Shabbos has enabled all of us to greet friends and fellow mispallelim from all three minyanim, and continue to enjoy the camaraderie of the QJC Family.

Harriet always worked side-by-side with her recently departed husband, Julius. Therefore. QJC’s Board of Trustees has renamed this important fund, the Harriet and Julius Wishik Kiddush Fund. As Harriet’s sixth Yahrzeit approaches, we would like to replenish the Kiddush Fund, Le Aliyas Nishmasam. A suggested donation of $100 per family, $50 for singles, will help us continue this devoted couple’s beautiful legacy
