    The method implies accurate pressure management and improved well control through closed loop uid circulation,

    Through hydraulic Weight On Bit (WOB), RDM pushes limits for Extended Reach Drilling (ERD).

    SYSTEMS OVERVIEW

    The dual drill string, the top drive adapter, the dual oat valveand the piston are the key elements of the Reelwell drilling system.

    The dual drill stringfacilitates closed loop circulation. Drill uid and cuttings are brought to surface through the center pipe, leaving the

    wellbore annulus free of cuttings. This feature also allows for riserless drilling.

    The top drive adapteris a dual conduit swivel for drilling uid.

    The dual oat valveenables downhole isolation of the well. This facilitates controlled pressure drilling and pressureless pipe connections.

    WOB is controlled through hydraulic pressure on top of the piston, pushing ERD limits.

    The footprint from the the Reelwell Drilling Method is small. It is easily adaptable to all rig types with minimal modications and crew training.

    MPD and UBD are used for mature reservoirs where pressure is low due to depletion.

    UBD implies that the well pressure is kept lower than the formation pressure avoiding the skin build-up.

    The well is drilled with controlled inow.

    MPD provides a well pressure equal to or slightly higher than the formation pressure. This is done by

    applying a light drill uid and surface pressure control.

    EXTENDED REACH DRILLING ERD

    ERD is an extreme type of directional drilling for long horizontal wells. The aims of ERD are: 1) to reach a

    larger area from one surface drilling location, or 2) to keep a well for a longer distance in a reservoir in order

    to maximise its productivity and drainage capability.

    Todays challenges in ERD are in cleaning of the hole and managing the mechanical loads on the drill string

    as well as managing the downhole pressure. At present maximum horizontal drilling reach is approximately

    12 km.

    Hydraulic WOB by piston

    DESCRIPTION

    The Reelwell Drilling Method pushes present limits in Extended ReachDrilling (ERD).

    Hydraulic WOB enables unique horizontal traction of drill string. Wellhydraulic calculations conrms reach beyond 20 km.

    RDM offers superior hole cleaning as the drill cuttings are removed from thewellbore just behind the drill bit and routed back to surface via the innerstring.

    Installing a liner below the piston enables lining the well while drilling.Liner expansion is performed by increasing hydraulic pressure above pistonwith the ultimate potential of making monodiameter wells.

    The method provides access to reserves otherwise inaccessible from platformor location. This makes building of new facilities redundant, and will beadvantageous considering environmental issues and economical aspects.
