Project DescriptionSika supplied roofing materials for this 109’000 m2 project which was completed in January 2010. As an integral part of Hongqiao Transportation Hub, Hongqiao Airport West Terminal Project is one of the landmark buildings of the “Large Hongqiao”. The project stands opposite the old terminal building. To the west it connects East Transportation Plaza, Hongqiao Station of Maglev Train, and Beijing-Shanghai Express Train Station. Shanghai Metro Line 2 runs through the Hongqiao Transportation Hub from west to east. After its finish, there will be the largest underground commercial space in this area. Hongqiao Transportation Hub will definitely play a significant role in the development of Hongqiao Area and Qingpu District.

Project ChallengeWith a large total area of 109’000 m2, this project is composed of dozens of roofs, including both concrete base and steel decks. In addition, the roofs vary a lot in their areas and shapes, some up to nearly 40’000 m2 while some only several hundred square meters. Due to the lower position of steel deck roofs, in case of fire from higher roofs it will lead to tremendous loss. Therefore, it needs good and efficient fireproof measures. The roof of each boarding bridge is only about one hundred square meters and visible from inside, so it requires an aesthetic appearance realized by proficient installation technique. There are a lot of equipment rooms and facilities on the roof, making it very difficult for detail processing. Moreover, this project is going to apply for “Luban Prize”, the top construction award in China, so it is extraordinarily strict on the installation technique.

Sika SolutionsThis project has three types of roof build-ups, concrete roof, anti-corrosion floor with pot plants and steel decks. To best suit these build-ups, Sika Sarnafil applied accordingly fully adhered system, loosely laid system and mechanically fastened system. In spite of complicated techniques of different systems, Sika Sarnafil has managed to combine perfectly the three SPR systems to deliver an outstanding and integrated roof. To prevent great loss caused by fire, for the steel deck roofs, we placed a layer of fireproof boards directly under the waterproofing layer to effectively protect the insulation board from fire. Being visible from inside, the boarding bridge roof with an area of about 100 m2 of each, is required to present a good-looking appearance. After many times of communications with the owner and dozens of trials, we made continuous improvement on techniques to finally meet the design requirements. The concrete roof was quite large with an irregular outline, sothere were a lot of ridges, making the installation quite complicated and caused material waste. To seal the water holes in the upstanding beams in the gutter, we made columns out of flexible PVC membrane to exactly fit the hole. Then the PVC columns were welded to the field membrane to form an integrated waterproofing layer. After many times of trials, we finally solve the wrinkle problems on the gutter wall due to different depths of the gutter. After finish, the waterproofing layer was very flat.

Expert Seminar on PVC SPR WaterproofingSystem of Hongqiao Airport ProjectOn March 15, 2010, the Expert Seminar on PVC SPR Waterproofing System of Hongqiao Airport Project was held in Shanghai. The leaders and representatives from project construction, general contractor, supervision, installation companies as well as experts from waterproof association, design institutes, standards authority, totally more than 20 people, attended the seminar. The seminar was hosted by Shanghai Construction Group and supported by Sika Sarnafil Waterproofing Systems (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.In the seminar, the representative from the construction company and general contractor explained why they chose PVC single ply roof waterproofing systems. This high standard project had to be finished within a tight schedule with landscape on roof. Therefore, Sika Sarnafil PVC SPR waterproofing systems, which had successful applications in many airport projects inland and abroad, definitely came to the fore as their first choice. The construction, general contractor and supervision companies expressed their full satisfaction on Sika Sarnafil’s product and installation quality.

Standards, association and design experts from China National Building Waterproof Association(CWA), Shanghai Chemical Building Material Trade Association, Suzhou National Building Material Test Center, China Metallurgical Group as well as Architecture Design & Research Institute of Tongji University, had a fervent discussion on the technical features and installation workmanship of this project. Mr. Zhu Dongqing, President of CWA, made a conclusion speech. According to the experts, the application of PVC single-ply roof systems on this project topped any other airport projects in China or other countries regarding to its large area, different roof bases and complicated equipments and facilities on roof. Sika Sarnafil has proved its proficient techniques and professional experience in this project. The innovative designs and solutions used in this project, such as fully adhere PVC SPR system on concrete base, will be included in related specifications and standard drawings, in order to push the development of new SPR technology in China. This seminar provided an excellent chance of technical and information communication of PVC SPR systems among construction, general contractor, design, supervision, installation and production companies. It helped to promote the new products, new technology and new process application of PVC waterproofing membrane in airports and other large projects. It also contributed to the furtherance of healthy sustainable development of SPR industry.
