OUR NEXT PRODUCTION"WONDERFUL TOWN," the second production of our musical comedy season opens inJanuary, 1981and is the musical version of the delightful play, "My Sister Eileen." It is the storyof two sisters who leave their midwestern culture of Ohio to try their luck in the 'Big City.' Theirinnocence and honesty quickly involve them in comic situations with their land-lord, employer, neighbors and even sidewalk strangers. "It's Love," "Ohio," and the tango routine were themost memorable musical numbers when Rosalind Russell starred in the movie version. Audi-tions are scheduled for October. Applications for Production Staff are currently being accepted. For additional information, please call the President, Edward Hand (408) 356-7340.

DENNIS ROSSOW (Tom Marlowe)Dennis was initiated into theater at Indiana University where he

received his B.A. degree. His acting versatility is evidenced by thecontrasting roles, first as Ali Hakim in the recent past production ofOKLAHOMA, and now as a star football hero. He also showed hisversatility in various character parts he did in CHARLEY'S AUNT, REDRYDER, and INSPECTOR HOUND. An unusual male is he as he lists"housework" as one of his favorite hobbies-he'll even do windows.

JOANNE C. BEATTY (Connie)Theater means fun to Joanne and she hopes to find it in community

groups for as long as she can perform. So far she's been with Montalvo,Gilbert & Sullivan, and recently with West Valley Light Opera in VERYGOOD EDDIE and ROSE MARIE. Other fun productions were PIRATESOF PENZANCE, TRIAL BY JURY, and many more. If she isn't rehears-ing or performing, she's motorcycling, her second favorite fun activity.

GARY A. DeMATTEI (Bobby Randall)We have a professional performer in our midst. Gary has played with

such luminaries as Van Johnson (DAMN YANKEES), Heather McRae(JESUS CHRIST SUPER-STAR), Nehimiah Persoff (OLIVER), JoAnnWorley (MAME and GYPSY), Theodore Bikel (FIDDLER ON THEROOF), to mention a few. As recently as August 26th you probably sawhim in the CBS movie of the week, THE SEDUCTION OF MISS LEONA,with Lynn Redgrave. Besides winning scholarship awards and out-standing performance awards, he was the Gypsy Robe Winner for hisextraordinary contributions during OLIVER. His ultimate goal is toperform on Broadway! We're sure he'll make it.

DENISE ELIZABETH PETERSEN (Babe O'Day)As a theater arts major at College of Notre Dame, Denise hopes to

gain the knowledge, and from her performances in productions ofCAROUSEL, GUYS AND DOLLS, MUSIC MAN, and now GOODNEWS, she hopes to acquire enough experience to become a profes-sional entertainer. With talents that range from singing to dancing toacting, plus her blonde good looks, we'll probably be seeing her on-stage and onscreen professionally before too long.

VIVIAN C. HARGIS (Patricia)Not only has Vivian appeared in many major roles, Hodel (FIDDLER

ON TI-tE ROOF), Julie (CAROUSEL). Laurie (OKLAHOMA), Marion, the librarian (MUSIC MAN), but she has also directed notable playsand musicals: OKLAHOMA (in 1960), THE MIRACLE WORKER, HAM-LET, MACBETH, and SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY. After studyingmusic and voice at the Peninsula Conservatory of Music, she hasbecome an accomplished singer and hopes for a career in opera.

Page 8: SARATOGA THEATRE 13777 Fruitvale Good News.pdf · piano, Sharon enjoys snow skiing and ice figure skating, but her favorite activity is teaching dancing and choreographing musicals

RAY TONEY ("Pooch" Kearney)Tap dancing is only one of the many talents Ray isgifted with. Acting

is another one as he proved in his past performances of Jerry Cohen(GEORGE "M"), "Spats" (SUGAR), and Barney (CAINE MUTINY), toname a few. Another talent will soon be revealed as song writer andproducer after he completes his two-act musical comedy on which heis collaborating with Marge Hand. So far, ten of the sixteen songs ".featured in the show are completed. We certainly are looking forward!

KEVIN M. FUREY (Coach Johnson)Having played in an endless list of productions (OLIVER, ANNIE

GET YOUR GUN, MUSIC MAN, WEST SIDE STORY, BRIGADOON,ANYTHING GOES, PIRATES OF PENZANCE) the list goes on and on,and having been a member of many community theater groups rangingfrom San Jose Children's Musical Theater, Sunnyvale CommunityPlayers, Santa Clara Arena Theater, Montalvo Theater to West ValleyLight Opera, Kevin has only one ambition: To perform in the first reper-tory theater company on the MOON!

MARGE HAND (Professor Kenyon)A familiar talent to our stage, Marge appears in her 17th production

for WVLO. Her most recent role was Aunt Eller in "OKLAHOMA!" forwhich she won the Most Impressive Actress Award. A very busy ladywho enjoys her family, bowling, sewing, singing, reading, and realestate (not necessarily in that order) in her spare time. With daughter,Nancy, in the show, "GOOD NEWS" has really become a 'family affair.'

KATHLEEN BELLARDI (Flo)Besides appearing in KISMET and SHOWBOAT, Kathleen has done

some real "character" roles. She was Gooch in MAME, Alma Hix inMUSIC MAN, and Gertie in OKLAHOMA. With a BA degree in musicand with continued dance lessons, she hopes to perform in bigger andbetter roles in musicals.

JOAN NELSON (Millie)With, a B.A. degree in sociology, Joan can't explain her avid interest

in theater. It started in high school where she appeared in GUYS ANDDOLLS and OKLAHOMA, then carried it further to San Jose CivicLight Opera, then to the Sunnyvale Community Players and now atWest Valley. Her ambition is to climb up the professional ladder fromTV commercials, to TV series, to movies until she gets to Broadway.

Page 9: SARATOGA THEATRE 13777 Fruitvale Good News.pdf · piano, Sharon enjoys snow skiing and ice figure skating, but her favorite activity is teaching dancing and choreographing musicals

SHARON ASHLEY CROPP (Polly)Wife of our director, employee at Hewlett-Packard in personnel, and

a great dancer and actress, that's what Sharon is. After various dancecourses at DeAnza, she is now working toward a B.A. degree in danceat San Jose State. She has been in VERY GOOD EDDIE, KISMET,CABARET, and ANYTHING GOES. Besides playing the flute andpiano, Sharon enjoys snow skiing and ice figure skating, but herfavorite activity is teaching dancing and choreographing musicals. Some day she hopes to have her own dance studio.

HERSCHEL SPARBER ("Beef")Herschel comes from Kentucky where he attended the state univer-

sity, then received his B.A. degree from Transylvania College in Lex-ington. This is his second time around at West Valley. He played thepart of Frank in our past production, BRIGADOON, then went on to dothe lead in ZORBA for the Sunnyvale Community Players. His furthertheater experience comes from performing at the San Jose City CollegeTheater and at Montalvo. He enjoys rugby and backgammon. Need apartner?

DONALD BENSON (Sylvester)Donald has made the rounds of community theaters from Santa

Cruz (where he earned a BA degree) to Gilroy and Saratoga, appear-ing in the well-known productions of MUSIC MAN, CALL ME MADAM,MY FAIR LADY, WHERE'S CHARLEY and many more. His favoritehobby is woolgathering. That's being honest!

STEPHEN COOK (Windy)Rock 'n roll bands, judo and skiing are Stephen's favorite pasttimes.

Besides West Valley, he has worked with the Palo Alto Players, Montalvo, and the San Jose Civic Light Opera in many productions. His favoriterole was Sky Mastersen in GUYS AND DOLLS.

JEFF ROBINSON (Slats)Jeff took two years of drama at Willow Glen High School, then

started participating in community theater productions. He has playedin CAMELOT, HELLO DOLLY, FINIAN'S RAINBOW and THE CUR-IOUS SAVAGE. Along with many other young hopefuls, his ambition isto appear in a Broadway production of anything.
