t h e p repara t ion o f t h i s d a t a , We cannot r e p o r t any success

i n an e f f o r t t o t r a c e t h e Eng l i sh a n c e s t r y of Rev. Xichard

Denton, beyond having e s t a b l i s h e d t h e f a c t t h a t a Denton

family l i v e d i n t h e v i c i n i t y of Halifax, Yorks. There a r e

many baptisms, marr iages and b u r i a l s of t h e name t h e r e , and

t h e name Zichard i s f r e q u e n t l y found. As this v i c i n i t y is

c l o s e t o Coley Chapel mhere Denton i s known t o hslve served

as Curate, it seems reasonable t o presume t h a t he was of

t h i s family,

Rev. Richard Denton %as born about 1603, sa id t o

be from Yorkshire, i n Ehgland. No mention is known t o the

w-riter o f the name o f h i s wife i n any record i n , this country,

though the Rev, Richard himself is f requent ly r e f e r r ed t o ,

leading t o the supposi t ion t h a t he was perhaps a widower. He

seems t o have preached f irst at Watertown, Mass. about 1635;

then t o Rethersf ie ld , C o r m a t t h e e a r l y se t t lement of that

p lace; thence t o Stamford, Conn, i n 1641; and l a t e r t o Long

Island. Be is f requent ly r e f e r r ed t o a s the f i r s t minister a t

Hempstead, L.I., but i n a deed a t Stamford i n 1650, i n which he

disposed or" h i s proper ty t h e r e he r e f e r s t o himself a s of

"Ma~hpeag'~ on Long Is land. There a r e t w o documents at Albany,

signed by him, dated f r o m Mashpeag and Middleborough i n 1650-

51. Be is s t a t e d t o have f o r a time preached t o t h e English

s o l d i e r s a t the For t i n New Amsterdam, probably at about t he

time o f t h e Indian t roubles i n 1643-5, In 1658 he was def i -

n i t e l y engaged t o a c t as min i s t e r a t Eempst ead, as appears f rom

a contract on the Town Records. He i s s t a t e d t o have returned

t o England about 1659 taking a church i n Essex, at which place

he is s t a t ed t o have died about 1662-3. He i s reported t o have

been Presbyterian, but his s e r v i c e a t the e a r l i e r churches i n

New England was i n a v i c i n i t y o f markedly "Independent ," o r

'TCongregational" opinion, and he evident ly accepted the Church

of England, a t f ea s t i n h i s l a t e r years, i n taking a charge i n

Essex. A r a the r i n t e r e s t i n g s tudy of h i s r e l i g i o u s a f f i l i a -

L.I.ll by Jas. TX. Mac Donald, D.D. 1862, 2ages 65-67. His in -

w a s e v i d e n t l y powerful , as vie f i n d t h a t q u i t e a few of the f i r s t

s e t t l e r s a t Stamford e v i d e n t l y followed him t o Rempstead. Venn's

but seems more >robable , as i t ~ o u l d make him-20 a t graduat ion,

i n s t e a d of about 40. American a u t h o r i t i e s , no tab ly Thompson,

The Rev. Richard Denton was i n a l l p o b a b i l i t y born

a t o r near Halifax i n England. The records o f t h e Church t h e r e

have been p a r t l y publ i shed , down t o about 1595, and are volum-

inous. In t h e b i r t h s a r e r e c o r d s of many of t h e name Denton,

and t h e name of Eichard is f r e q u e n t l y found. These records

show t h a t t h e Denton f a m i l y ha2 been loca ted f o r over a century

vas the son of Rev. Richard. Eardeley ev iden t ly classed him

Cambridge i n 1623. He w a s t he m i n i s t e r of Colby Cha$el, H a l i -

Winthrop. If Another a u t h o r i t y says he graduated from Catherine

H a l l , Cambridge, 1623.

Here seems t o be a d i f fe rence of opinion a s t o where

he received h i s educat ion , bu t a n agreement as t o t h e d a t e of

h i s graduat ion. Venn. i n "Alumnae Cantabrigensis" says he

graduated f r o m S t . Catherine 1622-3 and i s ?robably c o r r e c t .

A contemporary comment on Rev. Richard Denton is

found i n Cotton MatherTs "Uagml ia Christi" vol . 1, p. 398

t i v e times c a l l s them "clouds wi thou t water , c a r r i e d about of

winds .I1 A s f o r t h e t r u e men o f our p r i m i t i v e t imes , they were

indeed "ca r r i ed about of winds", though not winds o f s t r ange

d o c t r i n e , y e t t h e winds of hard suffering d i d c a r r y h i m as far

as from England i n t o America: t h e hurricanes of pe r secu t ion

wherein doubt less t h e "Prince of t h e powers of A i r " had i ts

in f luence , drove t h e heavenly clouds from one p a r t of t h e hea-

venly-church i n t o m o t h e r . But they mere not clouds mithout

Among these clouds was our pious and learned M r . Richard Den-

t o n of Yorkshire, who, having watered HAlifax i n England mith

h i s f r u i t f u l minis t ry was then by a tempest tossed in to New

England, where f i rs t at Wethersfield and then a t Stamford, L

h i s doc t r ine dropped as t h e r a i n , h i s speech d i s t i l l e d as t h e

dew, a s t h e small r a i n upon t h e tender herb, and as t he shotjers

upon t h e grass. Though he were a l i t t l e man, yet he had a

g rea t sou l ; h i s well-accom2lished mind, i n h i s l e s s e r body v i s

concludes t h i s w i t h one of h i s couplets

Most a u t h o r i t i e s agree t h a t he died a t Essex i n 1662.

Thom2son says aged 76. He says (11-697) "On t h e tomb erected

t o h i s memory i n t h a t p lace i s a L a t i n i n s c r i p t i o n , of which

t h e fol lowing is a f r e e t r a n s l a t i o n :

It would seem p o s s i b l e t h a t t h e L a t i n is c l o s e t o

back t o t h e o r i g i n a l Eng l i sh , a n admi t t ed ly "free1' t r a n s l a - '

t i o n , has l o s t something o f t h e power o f t h e o r i g i n a l , but as

Matherrs couplet ~ o u l d seem t o have been w r i t t e n long a f t e r

t h e i n s c r i p t i o n on t h e tomb, we can only mi-me1 a t the coin-

c i d enc e-.

According t o Venn's Cambridge Alumni, he died 1662

a t Hempstead, Essex. Inqu i ry at t h a t p l a c e has iieveloyed t h e

f a c t t h a t t he re is no such tomb t h e r e , and it would a lso a>-

pear t h a t Denton was not r ec to r o r cura te t he re i n 1660 t o

1663 . Hempstead, Essex, was s t rong ly Pur i tan , honever.

I n t he hope t h a t Richard Denton had l e f t a m i l l r e -

corded i n ~ n ~ i a n d a search o f w i l l s and administrat ions ms

made the re i n the period 1660-1680, but without r e s u l t . I 2

f e l t t ha t perhaps t h e reason f o r Daniel Dentonrs t r i p t o Eng-

land i n 1670 might have been t o s e t t l e h i s f a t h e r ' s e s t a t e ,

but if t h i s w a s t h e case , the records apparent ly do not s h o ~

it . It seems s t r ange also t h a t h i s t o r i a n s have been so gen-

e r a l l y mistaken about t h e burial p lace of Eichard Denton. He

c e r t a i n l y i s not bur ied , nor i s t h e r e any s tone memorial t o '

him a t Hempstead, Essex.

1626, i n Yorkshi re , England, according t o t h e @eight o f au-

t h o r i t i e s , and e v i d e n t l y accompanied h i s f a t h e r i n h i s var ious

migra t ions , t i l l about 1650, a t which t ime he was Town Clerk

a t Hempstead, L , I . I n 1656 he mas one of t h e first s e t t l e r s

a t Jamaica, L.I., and t h e r e a l s o became Town Clerk. I n 1662

he was one of t h e mag i s t r a t e s a t Jamaica, Oct. 28, 1664 he

w a s one of t h e g ran tees of t h e deed f o r t h e land a t and about

Elizabethtown, N. J . known a s t h e "Elizabethtown Grant1' or pa-

t e n t , Apgointed J u s t i c e o f t h e Peace by Gov. Nichols 1665

and 1666. I n 1670 he r e v i s i t e d England where he published a

"Brier" Desc r ip t ion of ?Jew York, formerly known as New Nether-

lard," which as it i s one of t h e e a r l i e s t contemporary

accounts now remaining, is f r e q u e n t l y r e f e r r e d t o a s a h is -

to ry . A p e r u s a l of it w i l l convince t h e r eader t h a t i t s

purpose vas t o i n c r e a s e migra t ion of d e s i r a b l e s e t t l e r s t o

t h e new land , and it gives advice t o ~ r o s p e c t i v e s e t t l e r s ,

Returning t o America, Daniel s e t t l e d a t Piscataway, East Je r -

sey , where he was ap2ointed Magis t r a t e Aug. 25, 1673. In

1674 he so ld t h e r e and went t o S p r i n g f i e l d , E I ~ L S S . , where he

taught school and w a s Town Recorder. A t a t o m meeting June

1 2 , 1684 a t Jamaica, .it w a s ordered t h a t "Daniel Denton shall

have l i b e r t y t o come and s e t t l e himself an& fami ly i n Jamaica."

Here he ¶as once more Town Clerk. Dec. 20, 1689 he was com-

missioned County Clerk of Queens County. He d ied about 1703,

leaving co w i l l of record. He married f irst about 1659 Abi- 2 1
