Caring is Sharing, Thank you!

Well Lads and Lassies,

GREAT NEWS! I am in receipt of three letters from LCIF reporting an accumulative donation

amount of $1,641.23. Another letter was received from Leader Dog reporting a woman that has

been matched with a Leader Dog due to our contributions. Keila stated “You have given me one

of the greatest gifts a person can ever have, independence and true companionship. With

everything I have, I thank you so dearly.” Then finally, two letters were received from PA Lions

Beacon Lodge Camp; one for donation(s) of $3,025. This contribution was used towards an

undesignated sponsorship for the 2017 camping season for camper Jesse Mazurkivich. The

second letter was a thank you for the districts contributions of $10,645 in 2016-2017, along

with an award patch! This was the donations collected for our cabins renovations. These

donations and others like them are made possible because of the diligent and hard work that we

do. Collectively, the hundreds of members in this area of communities (aka the district) provide

hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to those in need. I don’t know about you, but I think

that is amazingly incredible. But let’s not stop there; let’s go the whole nine yards! The million

dollar question is why are we so quiet about who we are and what we do? While at a club

visitation, I asked why and I wasn’t too surprised by the answer. “Back in the day, we were

taught not to talk about what we do, just do it.” So my question then is, how do we attract new

(more youthful) members if they don’t know what we do?! How many times have you heard the

saying “Oh, you’re the ones that collect eye glasses?” Would you join a club, so that you could

“just” collect eye glasses? Probably not! But would you join a club that does that and about a

hundred other things? Probably so! So why not tell folks about who we are and what we do???

I recently participated in a LCI webinar called “Answering The Call To Service”. The guest

speaker was PID Jerome Thompson; who is the dignitary that attended PDG Dave Barrett’s

convention last year. He primarily spoke about selling your product, let perspective members

know what kind of club you are. Make sure that you have the current membership packets to

give to them and to go through the packet with them. He spoke briefly about being a knife and

fork club; the club that only writes checks. He touched on that because he stated that when

the club doesn’t go out into the community to see firsthand what their good works are doing,

they miss the joy of making a difference. He also stated “to open our mind, heart and mouth to

share what our call for service is”. LCI is claiming March and April as “new member explosion”

months. He asked that we commit ourselves to starting that new club or finding one new

member for your club. Currently we have 830 members in our district; just imagine what more

we could do if we increased that by 25%?! Wow!! LCI’s statistics say that for each Lion

approximately ten people are affected by that Lion. With over 1,000 Lions we would be

impacting our communities, neighbors and around the world more then you could imagine. He

reminded us that each club is its own unique entity and as long as the LCI’s constitution and bi-

laws are followed, the club can operate the way they choose. For example, not calling others by

title or not having an opening ceremony. To speak to the generations that are our future, we

need to step into the next century of Lionism. What worked for our grandfathers does not

necessarily work today. Keeping this in mind, LCI introduced this year a new service platform:

Diabetes, Vision, Environment, Hunger and Childhood Cancer. They removed engaging with the

youth because it is not a service platform but rather an opportunity to have the youth help us

with fundraisers and events.

Take a leap of faith, help bring the next century of Lions further than it has ever been. I am

here to help you in any way that I can, please do not hesitate to contact me whether it be for

my help, information or ideas. We are the Lions of District 14H, let’s wave our banners high and

let our neighbors know that we are here! I wish each of you all the best!

In Service & In Friendship,

DG Cathy
