IntroductionNetweaver BW and Business Suite on HANA are becoming more common scenarios with customers who choose the HANA platform. Performance testing, monitoring and tuning in such environment requires the setup of tools that will monitor the Netweaver as well as the HANA system. This has to be part of any performance and availability management project involving the environment described above. This comprehensive guide originated from our 3-parts blog, which we will detail the setup with Solution Manager 7.1 SP12 monitoring SAP NW BW 7.31 on HANA SPS07 based on SUSE 11.3:• Part 1: Netweaver on HANA Monitoring Setup Part 1 of 3 (Preparation)

documents the various Preparation steps in order to allow the Solution Manager and the Managed System to communicate with each other via the Diagnostics Agent.

• Part 2 we will look at the Managed System Configuration of NW and HANA.

• Part 3 we will perform the Technical Monitoring Configuration inside Solman.

Register HANA system HDB in SLD• Setup Monitoring User in HANA

• To be able to access monitoring information inside HANA and to connect HANA to DBACOCKPIT in Solution Manager, we need a user in HANA.

• Create a new user in HANA:


Setup MONITOR User in HANA• Make sure that you assign the roles MONITORING and

PUBLIC to the user

• Use HANA Studio to log on the HANA with this user for the first time, to change the initial password to a production password.

• You also should make sure that the password of this user doesn’t have to be changed anymore. This can be done using this SQL command. See also SAP note 1702224 for details.

• 1702224 - Disable password lifetime for technical users

• Important to use <SID>adm user on OS level.

Reinstall HANA Client and Update Host Agent

• Outside Discovery: Webmethod GetDatabaseProperties/usr/sap/hostctrl/exe/saphostctrl -function GetDatabaseProperties -dbname HDB -dbtype hdb


SLD Requirements for BW on HANA• IF HANA is the Database of an ABAP Application (e.g. BW on

HANA) the ABAP System needs to send the information that it uses the HANA Database.

• Therefore 2 SAP Notes have to be implemented using SNOTE:• 1652485: RZ70: Enhancement for HANA database (for BW on ABAP

7.30 or 7.31)

• 1649323: SLD: Enhancement for HANA database


Register the HANA DB to the SLD• Switch to the HANA Database user <sid>adm

• Change in the directory /usr/sap/<sid>/SYS/global

• Execute the command for creation of SLD Configuration Files:

• sldreg -configure slddest.cfg –usekeyfile

• (SAP Note 1018839)Execute the command to register in SLD:sldreg -connectfile /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/global/slddest.cfg –file /usr/sap/<SID>/HDB<InstNr>/<Host>/trace/sldreg.xmlsldreg -connectfile /usr/sap/HDB/SYS/global/slddest.cfg –file /usr/sap/HDB/HDB00/imdbhdb/trace

• SAP HANA Lifecycle Manager is not installed!



Installing the SAP HANA Lifecycle Manager• Download HLM from http://service.sap.com/swdc --> Support Packages

and Patches --> Search for Support Packages and Patches --> Hana Lifecycle Manager.

• Login to HANA server as root. Extract downloaded SAR file.

• Execute ./hdbinstEnter root password

Enter SSH passphrase (same as root password; check password repository)

Ensure successful completion of installation.

Accessing HANA Lifecycle Manager• Start HANA Studio

• Login to HANA database

• To start HLM, right click the system --> Select option “Lifecycle Management”


Register the HANA DB


Verify the HANA DB is in SLD


Install HANA Client and configure DBACockpit on Solution Manager• Please ensure that the HANA Database Clients are installed on the Solution Manager

according to http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1597627

• 7.20 SAP kernel patch level (100 or higher).Check whether the 720 SAP kernel that you use contains the minimum patch level. If it does not contain the minimum patch level, download the current patch for the SAP kernel from SAP Service Marketplace (see Note 19466).

• SAP DBSL for SAP HANA database. This DBSL is available on SAP Service Marketplace in each SAPEXEDB.SAR (as of 720 patch level 100). Only the DBSL for SAP HANA database (lib_dbsl_PL.SAR) is available on SAP Service Marketplace under this path.

• Log on to your Windows application server as the SAP administrator (<SID>adm).hdbinst -a client -p <lw>:\usr\sap\<SID>\hdbclient

• Adjust the OS environment for <SID>adm.

• Enter the path for the DB client software <lw>:\usr\sap\<SID>\hdbclient in the environment variable PATH for the user <SID>adm.After you adjust the environment, you must restart the application server.

• Call transaction DBCO and enter the logical connection in the table DBCON (optional for SLT).DBMS = HDBUser name = SYSTEMDB password = <password>Connection info: imdbhdb:30015

Introscope, Life Cycle Managers• Basic Configuration: Solution Manager Diagnostics Agents,

Host agents and connectivity• Managed Systems Configuration: discover agents, assign

products• Technical Monitoring: scope of systems and reporting

• The result is more to manage: systems, software, components, connectivity, knowledge. In return, you get automated aggregation of alerts, metrics and chart

SummaryThe technical monitoring setup is lengthy, yet it only scratches the surface. We are using default thresholds out-of-the-box, so typically in your environment you would need to plan another phase to configure thresholds, notifications and any downstream integration such as service desk functionality. For best practices, we recommend those to be done over a period of time with actual learning from the behavior of actual systems in use, typically with some representative test or production workload. Managing alerts, thresholds and notifications is normally an iterative process, however there must be at least a general service level defined for IT operations to implement the policies and procedures which address overall performance and availability objective of the environment.IMPORTANT: note that Solman 7.1 does not show the details of the alerts in the inbox, and still requires one to navigate to the managed system to troubleshoot the alerts (without time-sensitive context because one still has to find the alert/event, if it still exists in the managed system when one performs the analysis). Alerts in Solmanare a form of aggregation on events or metrics. It is still very hard to find the root-cause or context of the problem or do any kind of correlation!HANA monitoring through Solman is limited to a single tenant.
