SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA Ramp-up ResultsHome Trust

Project scope and business scenario

Home Trust has successfully completed Proof of Concept migrating SAP NetWeaver BW 7.0 to SAP NetWeaver BW 7.3 and migrating ½ of TB data from Oracle DB to SAP HANA DB. This resulted in drastic improvements of Reporting run-times in BW, SAP BusinessObjects and Cognos Reporting as well as data load improvements and screen navigation and stand alone Programs

Performance and benefits

DSO/Cube loading speeds up about 1.3x faster

DSO activation 19x

BW query average 8-12x– Sub-optimized (large data sets and OLAP operations) – 2.5x

– Simple queries (Few char and few kyf) up-to – 453x

– Cognos integration at least 10x

Customer quotes

“We are very impressed with the proof-of-concept results running BW on SAP HANA. As a result, we are re-architecting our Reporting environment to leverage BW on HANA. Our plan is to replatform reporting over the course of summer 2012.”

Saniv Purba, CIO of Home Trust

SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA Ramp-up ResultsNongfu Springs

Project scope and business scenario

NongFu Springs implemented SAP NetWeaver BW on DB2 in 2008. Over time, as data volumes in SAP NetWeaver BW continued to grow, overall performance started to degrade affecting business users productivity. This prompted the move to running SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA in early 2012

Performance and benefits

5x to 7x improvement in DSO generation and activation Average report speed on SAP NetWeaver BW queries improved by 5x

to 10x Non disruptive for the business when using SAP BusinessObjects BI

on top of SAP NetWeaver BW – just much faster data processing and a better user experience

Reduced IT workload with the elimination of indexes and aggregates as well as simplified modeling in SAP HANA

Entire data volume stored in DB2 when migrated to SAP HANA (and stored in-memory) is 1/3x smaller

Customer quotes

“We are so satisfied with the operation and speed of the entire BW on HANA implementation. According to end users' feedback, the speed of their standard BW reports is very fast and has been improved greatly. In addition, the running of the whole production system is stable with fast speed of the data extract, ETL, and incremental updates.”

SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA Ramp-up ResultsShanghai Volkswagen

Project scope and business scenario

Migrated original BW Test system (copy from BW Productive system), converted relevant modeling and showed data with Business Objects 4.0 Web Intelligence

Performance and benefits

Cube loading speeds up about 1.39x DSO activation 4.15x BW query 8.5x WebI execution 11.6x, compared to BW on Oracle

(Ex. With the same data volume(40 millions) in Cube, SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA: 45 seconds, BW on Oracle: result set returned finally after a 20 minutes wait)

Customer quotes

“Real-time insights combining our customer demand, marketing promotion, with supply chain visibility on a rock-solid enterprise-class data platform is a must in our industry.

With SAP HANA, we see a tremendous opportunity to dramatically improve our enterprise data warehouse solutions with BW on HANA, drastically reducing data latency and improving speed when we can return query results in 45 seconds from BW on HANA vs. waiting up to 20 minutes for empty results from BW on Oracle.”

SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA Ramp-up ResultsUSHA

Project scope and business scenario

Migration of original BW-DB2 production system to SAP HANA with data volumes of 750GB, (faster migration – reduced to 419GB by PSA data clean-up). In addition, the reloaded data foot-print on SAP NetWeaver BW-SAP HANA was reduced to 46GB

Performance and benefits

Query performance improvement 60-80x Data load 10x faster Compression factor 9.1 85+ reports/queries running over SAP HANA

Customer quotes

“Business users are very thrilled with the results. They are able to run reports faster, and more importantly, productively utilize their time for analysis and better decision making.

Our IT department is also very happy as this project has achieved 3 things in one go: achieve a smaller DB footprint for the same size of a BW deployment; faster data loads making more current data available to business; faster reporting and analysis making business users happy

We are now planning to migrate to BPC – HANA. Customer is also planning to upgrade to SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.0.”

SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA Ramp-up ResultsLenovo

Project scope and business scenario

Lenovo launched their BI Go Live Project in Nov 2011 with SAP NetWeaver BW 7.3 on SAP HANA 1.0 and BusinessObjects BI 4.0 for reporting in Global Shipment Process. After a successful implement and pilot, they went live in Mar 2012

Performance and benefits

Reporting performance (Web Intelligence) improved by 2x to 20x Data in SAP HANA compressed by 2–4 x after loading from database source

BW system Huge and complicated data scenarios supported in SAP HANA e.g. 6

underline tables with more than 100 million records; 20 tables more than 10 million records

General BW Query performance improved from hours to minutes

Customer quotes

“ I personally was very convinced by the HANA technology. With the quick implementation, we are able turn the HANA product into a solution reality at Lenovo, which significantly increased our business end to end efficiency, without any business disruption.

Enabling HANA to run under our SAP BW system is a very important milestone.  I am now confident that we have much greater capabilities for advanced reporting which will make our operations more efficient and productive.  In fact, I visited with our worldwide manufacturing leads who already were seeing benefits of this capability as we can now create key reports on shipping more timely and accurately across all of our plants.  This is the kind of capability we need to drive operational excellence and become #1!”

Project scope and business scenario

Australia-based systems integrator and SAP partner, Innogence set up an SAP HANA instance at its premises, running under SAP NetWeaver BW to run various test scenarios using large volumes of test data loaded into SAP HANA and BW

Performance and benefits

Customer Feedback

The validation of BW on SAP HANA is particularly promising, as this solution will drive a lot of SAP HANA adoption within SAP’s installed base. What is more is that partners developing on the SAP HANA platform will enable new business scenarios and reach customers and industries that SAP may have otherwise never been able to access

Yazaki Europe, an automotive supplier and the world’s largest producer of wiring harnesses for cars and trucks, had been using the 3.5 version of SAP NetWeaver BW 3.5. The company was having challenges with the performance of the existing reporting system.

“We chose SAP NetWeaver BW powered by SAP HANA to improve and accelerate several processes in the areas of finance and controlling, production and logistics and we have already seen major improvements. We were able to accelerate processes within finance and controlling, such as end-of-month closing, year-end closing and other common analysis in the area of controlling.”“Our next big step will be the acceleration of processes within the productive ERP system, among others in the area of production and logistics.”

With SAP NetWeaver BW powered by SAP HANA, Yazaki Europe has been able to accelerate reporting and is now accessing reports faster out of info cubes and using creativity within reporting. In addition, they are leveraging in-memory processing for fast acceleration of raw tables, calculations and BW metadata.
