    Landscape and Use Case

What you Need for SOA Development

For a typical SOA development project, you will need access to three things: a backend system such as SAP R/3, a composition environment which provides you a J2EE engine and composition tools, and a developer tool that gives you the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for development. The picture below describes one landscape example where the SAP Discovery System for Enterprise SOA is used as the backend, SAP Composition Environment (CE) provides the J2EE engine, and SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio (DS) is used as the IDE.

The above landscape is best for an enterprise SOA demo/pilot development project. There are many other options for landscape setup for other scenarios. For example, you may have a dedicated server for SAP NetWeaver CE and the DB (supported DBs include SAP MaxDB and SQL Server), a few servers for the R/3 instances, and have SAP NetWeaver DS installed on individual developer’s laptops. Another example might have the CE and NWDS on one box, which developers can remotely access for development.

In my case, the Composition Environment (CE) 710 is installed in the same box as a version 3 Discovery System, and the Enterprise Services Repository (ESR) 7.10 is installed as an add-on to the CE system. SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio is installed on my own laptop and is configured to connect to the CE and ESR instance.

  • SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1 Installation Quick Guide

    What to Install First

I recommend these steps to bring up the complete SOA development environment: 1. Install SAP NetWeaver CE 7.10 (Java AS, SAP MaxDB, and Services Registry are included in the

installation) 2. Install the ESR add-on for SAP NetWeaver CE 7.10 (need separate download and separate

installation) 3. Install SAP NetWeaver DS and configure it to use the SAP NetWeaver CE instance. 4. If you don’t have the SAP Discovery system for enterprise SOA yet, strongly consider getting one.

The good thing about the Discovery system is that it provides all the software you need pre-delivered in one box – SAP NetWeaver 7.0 and SAP ERP 6.0 with Enhancement Package 3. Of course, you don’t have to use a Discovery system for enterprise SOA development. If you already have the latest versions of SAP NetWeaver and SAP Business Suite in your development environment, you can leverage what you already have.

Where to Find Documentation The best source of documentation about SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment is the Composition Environment home page on SDN. For more general information about composition, refer to the SAP NetWeaver Composition page.

This paper gives you everything you need to do to install SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1 SR3 Developer Edition. There is also an official installation guide available on SDN, but it can be overwhelming with its number of cross references.

For productive edition setup, I recommend you read the Master Guide to get some idea about how the system landscape should be planned and managed for your environment. Also use the product availability matrix to find out what particular OS and DB versions are supported by CE7.1.

You can download all other critical documents on the Composition Environment resource page.

    Where to Download Files

    Option 1: SDN Download Site

SDN has a trial version of SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment available.

In the download page, there are two download options.

Either option will guide you to a page that allows you to choose the download file. To install SAP NetWeaver DS in your local machine and connect it to a separate Composition Environment system later, choose SR3 - Trial Version (the second option), and click on the download link in the next page. When prompted to select a file to download, choose the Composition Environment file.

Note that a separate download and installation are needed to install the ESR add-on for SAP NetWeaver CE.

  • SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1 Installation Quick Guide

    Option 2: SAP Service Marketplace

If you are already a SAP customer and have an S-user account already, you can instead go to the SAP Service Marketplace. From there, go to Download > SAP Installations and Upgrades > Entry by Application Group > SAP NetWeaver > SAP NETWEAVER > SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1.

You will need Solution Manager Maintenance Optimizer to download the files. Solution Manager is necessary for a productive system setup and management. However, if you just want to try out SAP NetWeaver CE, it might be excessively complicated for you to get access to and learn about Solution Manager just for the installation.

    Critical Pre-Installation Preparation

    Hardware & Software

SAP NetWeaver CE Developer Edition can only be installed on 32-bit Windows and requires Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 or higher. Note that the productive version also supports 64-bit Windows - details are available from the PAM SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment Product Availability Matrix (PDF 88 KB).

As per the Installation Guide, the installation of SAP NetWeaver CE requires 10 GB of free disk space, at least one 3 GHz processor, and at least 2 GB RAM. The minimum specifications are 7 GB disk space, 1.5G RAM, and one 1.5 GHz PC, but performance at the minimum level is unsatisfactory at best.

    For databases, SAP NetWeaver CE supports both SAP MaxDB 7.6 and MS SQL Server 2005 SP1 or higher; SAP MaxDB is by default installed with CE. If you want to use the MS SQL Server database, you have to install it before installing CE and choose it as your DB option when prompted during the installation process;

You should also have the following programs installed in your machine before the installation: - SUN JDK 1.5.0_11 (or higher, but lower than 1.6). - A Web browser - Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher or Firefox 1.0 or higher.

    Page File Size Setup

SAP NetWeaver CE needs a page file size of at least 4 GB (twice the available RAM). It’s better to make sure you have the page file size set up correctly before you start installation, since it may require a system restart for the change to take effect.

    To check paging file size:

    1. Click the Windows Start button and choose Control Panel → System.

    2. Choose the Advanced tab and choose Settings in the Performance pane.

    3. Choose Advanced in the Performance Options dialog window.

The current page file size is displayed in the Virtual memory pane. To change the page size value, choose Change, enable the Custom size radio button, and enter the new value in the input field Initial size (MB).

    Tips for Installation

    How long does installation take?

The overall installation process takes about 90 minutes, but you should plan for half a day so you have time to do post-installation configuration and to check out some of the interesting exercises which allow you to get familiar with SAP NetWeaver CE.

Where to Find the SAP Installer

After you have downloaded the file, unzip the archive file and use start.htm to start the installation wizard.

Follow the instructions to get to the installer (sapinst.exe). Alternatively, you can go directly to the folder …/CompEnv/CE71_03_IM_WIN_I386_ADA/.

Double click on sapinst.exe, and you will see the initial screen of the installer.

  • SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1 Installation Quick Guide

What are the key parameters you need to provide to the installer?

While going along with the wizard, take the defaults as much as I can. - choose “Typical” for parameter default settings - In the license screen, scroll down to select “Agree” (the default is “Deny”). - Provide the location of the Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction

Policy File for JDK vendor SAP AG and JDK version 5.1. If you don’t have the archive file in your local drive, you need to download it from Sun as directed below.

  • SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1 Installation Quick Guide

    - Enter a master password (Make sure you note it down somewhere)

Make sure to memorize the master password that you enter during the installation. You will have to use it whenever you are asked for authentication by either the SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment Installation or the SAP MaxDB database.

The default usernames and passwords directly after the installation are copied below:

    * SAP NetWeaver Application Server (e.g. for deploying applications)

    o username: Administrator

    o password:

    * SAP MaxDB Database Manager operator login (e.g. when you click on the database icon in the SAP Management Console)

    o username: control

    o password:

    * SAP MaxDB database user (for logging on to the MaxDB SQL Studio)

    o username: superdba

    o password:

    * Starting and stopping the server from the SAP Management Console

    o username: Windows username !

    o password: Windows password !

    * Administration of the ICM (e.g. when you click on the globe icon in the SAP Management Console)

    o username: Administrator

    o password: abc123

Note: the above login for ICM is provided by the installation guide. I notice that it does not really work. But for the installation process, there is no need to access the ICM.

If everything goes well, it takes about 10 minutes to enter the parameters, and you will see a summary screen which presents all the parameters you have entered.

From the parameter summary screen, the wizard fires up an automated 33-phase installation. It gives good indicators about the progress and requires no user actions. Let the machine work without interruption – you can take a break if you wish. In my installation, the installation took exactly 60 minutes. At the end, you should see a confirmation screen as below:

    Completing the Installation

    Verify the Installation Completed Successfully

At the end of the installation, if the wizard doesn’t automatically open the SAP MMC, open it from the Start menu, and make sure all the components are running.

You should make sure that all the processes are shown as green (green means that the process is running, yellow means in process, red means down). Be patient - it takes a while for the Java AS to load up. The first start of the Java engine could take longer than a few minutes because the engine does a lot of scripting during the initial start.

After all processes are green, you can check out the CE homepage at http://: (the default port number is 50000, but it can be changed by the admin. For example, my current CE port is 56700). If everything is working properly, you should get a page similar to what’s shown below:

    Additional Installation and Set up

    - If you would like to leverage SAP ESR 7.10 for services modeling and design, install the ESR add-on (see a separate quick guide for SAP NetWeaver DS installation listed in the Related Information section)

    - If you use an SAP Discovery system, make sure your local hosts file is updated to include a pointer to the IP of the DS server. The hosts file is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc folder. Open it with Notepad, and add the following line:

    iwdfvm2160 iwdfvm2160.wdf.sap.corp

Use a DOS command window to ping your DS server and record its IP. For example, if your DS box is named tsphlvmds1 and its IP is 10.3.83.19, you need to add a line as shown below

    - Install and configure your SAP NetWeaver DS to work with the SAP NetWeaver CE (see a separate quick guide for ESR add-on installation listed in the Related Information section)

Now you are ready to have fun with SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment. To start playing with a scenario that uses the Discovery system, SAP NetWeaver CE, the ESR, and the Services Registry, check out a few exercises as described by Amir Glatt’s blog Discovery System, Composition Environment, and ESR – How Does it All Come Together?
