The Most Rev. Robert F. Vasa

Bishop of Santa Rosa

September 27-28, 2019

Dear Congress Participants,

It is my pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the annual Santa Rosa Religious Education Congress!

In his Apostolic Exhortation on the encounter with the Living Jesus Christ in America, St. John Paul II

taught that a place of encounter with Jesus is the sacred Liturgy. Building upon the Second Vatican Coun-

cil, he wrote about the “manifold presence of Christ in the Liturgy,” (Ecclesia in America, no 12).

I myself also wrote about the importance of encountering the Living Jesus Christ and the need for us as a

Diocese to “re-vision” the importance of liturgy and the Sacraments, especially at Sunday Mass, in my

Pastoral Letter on Evangelization (cf. page 11).

This year’s theme “Encountering Jesus in the Liturgy” reminds us of Jesus Christ in Liturgy and Sacra-

ments. It is my hope then that you are emboldened to carry this message to the parishes, schools and insti-

tutions of the Diocese.

May Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of America, help us to follow her Son.

I pray that God continue to shower every good grace and blessing upon you.

Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus,

Excmo. Rvdo. Sr. Obispo

Robert F. Vasa

Diócesis de Santa Rosa

Santa Misa 9:00 AM

Keynote Address 10:10 AM - 11:20 AM (gymnasium)

Dr. James Pauley Dr. James Pauley is Professor of Theology and Catechetics at Franciscan University of Steubenville. He is author of the book, Litur-gical Catechesis in the 21st Century: A School of Discipleship (Liturgy Training Publications, July 2017). In 2014, Dr. Pauley was ap-pointed editor of The Catechetical Review, Franciscan University’s journal dedicated to the new evangelization. Dr. Pauley began working as a parish catechetical leader in 1989 and has served professionally in parish, diocesan and university catechetical for-mation for thirty years. Having received his Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Liturgical Institute in 2014, he is a frequent speaker in dioceses and parishes nationwide. James is married to Katrina and they are blessed with three beautiful daughters.

“ENCOUNTERING GOD IN THE SACRAMENTS:

HOW DO WE HELP OTHERS?”

We catechists wholeheartedly affirm with St. John Paul II that “it is in the sacraments, and especially the Eu-

charist, that Christ Jesus works in fullness for our transformation.” And yet, this transformation isn’t automatic.

There are important things we need to understand and abilities we need if we are going to live from the sacra-

ments and be committed to them over the course of a lifetime. What can catechists do to help develop an under-

standing of the sacraments and a desire to participate in them? Specific strategies will be suggested, so that

those we teach can invest themselves into a transforming sacramental life.

Congress Exhibitors:

There will be a few Exhibitors showcasing Books and Gifts.

Please take time during the day and stop by and visit.

Session 1 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

1 - 12 “Jesus Christ: Contained, Offered and Received Three Wonders of Our Lord's Eucharistic Presence on Earth”

Jesus said to them, "“I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will

not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst. John 6:35

Do you want to grow closer to Christ but feel unsure about how to go

forward? Just as others we love have particular avenues through which

they connect and strengthen bonds with us, so does Jesus in the Holy

Eucharist. Strengthen your bond with Jesus Christ by reflecting on His

three fold Presence to us in the Holy Eucharist. Mother Teresa Christe

will share the theology of this Mystery of Faith and offer some exam-

ples with practical tips to help you grow quickly and securely in

Friendship with Christ.

Mother Teresa Christe, MSSR

Mother Teresa Christe Johnson MSSR has been a consecrated religious for more than 35 years. She serves as Mother Superior for the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa, founded for our diocese by Bishop Robert Vasa in 2012. The Mari-an Sisters are devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary and committed to the mis-sion of Jesus Christ through prayerful witness, intercessory prayer, works of joyful evangelization with a distinct devotion to the sacred liturgy. Mother Teresa Christe completed her studies in education, history and com-munications at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. She has taught extensively in both elementary and high schools, served in retreat ministry, and has conducted Catholic Catechetical programs for both adults and youth. Currently, she serves as the Reverend Mother and Vocations Director of the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa. She has taught Advanced Theology and Campus Ministry courses at Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa.

Please provide us with three choices for each Session. We will make every effort to schedule you with your 1st choice.

1 - 14 “Introduction to the Liturgy”

What is Liturgy? What does it mean to participate? How do I enter

into the mystery? Using the Catechism, and the Scriptures, and the

writings of Pope Benedict, Fr. Keyes will explore what is necessary to

prepare for and participate fully in the Liturgy. The liturgy essentially

involves action and energy: the heavenly liturgy tells us of all the ac-

tors in the drama: Christ and the Father, the Holy Spirit, angels and all

living things, the people of God (whether already enjoying incorruptible

life or still living through the great tribulation).

Rev. Jeffrey Keyes

Fr. Jeffrey Keyes, is a Catholic Priest in the Diocese of Santa Rosa, in California. Ordained to the priesthood in 1991, he has served as Pastor of St. Barnabas parish in Alameda 1994 - 2001, Director of Seminary Formation, 2001 - 2004, and as Pastor at St. Edward 2004 - 2015. A musician and composer, he has served the Diocese of Oakland in a number of capacities including member of the Liturgical Commission and chair of the Music commission. Fr. Keyes was Choir Director at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral 1989 - 1991. In 2001 - 2004 he conducted the Gregorian Schola at the University of Chicago. Since 2016 he is the Chaplain for the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa, Director of the Chant Schola of the Cathedral of St. Eugene in Santa Rosa.

1 - 11 “A Biblical Spirituality of the Sacraments”

Understanding the biblical roots of the Sacraments of the Church is

critical for Catholics. This session will provide those who attend

important scriptural reflections for liturgy and the sacraments.

Rev. John Boettcher

Fr. John has had the wonderful privilege of spending over 2 years in the Holy Land, with countless visits to places mentioned in the Bible. He lived for 7 months in the Holy Sepulchre where Christ died and rose from the dead, 5 months at the site of the Visitation, & a couple of weeks in Naza-reth at Mary’s house, where the Annunciation and Incarnation came about. Here it says on the floor, “And the Word HERE became flesh.” For 3 years Fr. John pored over these words daily in his doctoral studies on John’s Prologue. He has spent evenings alone in Mary’s house, singing songs of tenderhearted devotion to her as the sounds echoed and reverberated in the giant basilica. Indeed, she herself said, “All generations will call me blessed.” And so it has been.

1 -13 “Breaking Down the Mass: Structure and Content”

This workshop will provide the overall structure of the Mass and

the content of the Mass to provide participants a means to enter

deeply into the mysteries of the source and summit of the Catholic

Faith. Participants will not only appreciate what the Mass is but

the deeper reason for the structure of the Mass.

Rev. David Jenuwine

Born in Detroit, MI, Fr. Jenuwine grew up in a family of engineers. He worked for 18 years in the automotive industry earning two degrees in Engineering and developed vehicle electronics and control software. After a 6 years stint in the US Navy in Japan as an airborne cryptologist specializ-ing in Chinese Mandarin, he applied the GI Bill and Navy College fund to his seminary and theology studies; earning a degree in Philosophy, and then a degree in Theology. He completed his studies at St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity in Minnesota. He was ordained by Archbishop Robert Carlson for the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan in 2009, and three years ago relocat-ed to the diocese of Santa Rosa, and served as parochial vicar at St. Apolli-naris Church in Napa. He recently was assigned to St. Vincent de Paul Church in Petaluma.

Session 1 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

1 - 17 “Forming Credible Catholics: Seven Essentials”

Catholics, particularly youths, are leaving the faith in record numbers

based on the false perception that faith and reason are incompatible.

This workshop provides an overview of how to help Catholics combat

this trend as seen in the modules developed by Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J.,

in the areas of science, reason, faith and the Sacraments. The 7-

Essentials Modules are supplemental material designed for those in-

volved with forming ages 12 and older. Attendance is encouraged for

all catechetical leaders, parents, and all those concerned with the

growing disaffiliation of Catholics from the Church.

Janell Whaley

Janell’s background is in Leadership, Training & Development, and Opera-tions. Helping those around her to achieve their potential is what inspires Janell day-to-day. Janell is an Organizational Effectiveness professional with over 20 years of experience. She specializes in the facilitation of growth and change through educating, training, coaching, and developing teams and individuals. Janell has several years of experience teaching and training in a corporate setting, as well as spent several years working with and serving various non-profit organizations.

Lunch 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

1 - 16 “The Sacrament of Reconciliation”

The Lord Jesus gave us the great gift of his divine mercy in Confes-

sion. This workshop will address the vital role of this Sacrament of

Healing in our lives as Catholics.

Rev. Gary Sumpter

Fr. Gary Sumpter is a Catholic priest in the Diocese of Santa Rosa. He is the Chaplain for the Kolby Academy and Trinity Prep Catholic School in Napa. He is retired and is a resident at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Napa.

1 - 15 “The Liturgy of the Hours”

A theological, historical and practical introduction to the Church’s

official daily prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours. The General Instruc-

tion of the Liturgy of the Hours will be studied and an overview of

available resources will be provided.

Rev. Mr. John Plass

Deacon Plass is a seminarian for the Diocese of Santa Rosa. He grew up in Tulelake, CA, where he learned to appreciate the rhythms of the natural world. This appreciation readily overflowed into a love for the rhythms of the Sacred Liturgy, and it was this attraction to the liturgy that gradually led him to discern a vocation to the priesthood. He was ordained to the diaconate in June of this year and is currently finishing his studies at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, CA.

1 - 18 “The Eucharist and the Real Presence of Jesus”

This spirituality seminar focuses on the meaning of the presence of

Jesus in the Eucharist. The mode of Christ’s presence under the Eu-

charistic species is unique (Catechism #1374). As St. Thomas Aqui-

nas wrote, it raises the Eucharist above all the sacraments as ‘the

perfection of the spiritual life and the end to which all the sacraments

tend’. Participants will be nourished by a spirituality of the Eucha-

rist.

Rev. Robert Torczynski

Fr Robert Torczynski (aka Dom Marie-Robert) is a graduate of the Integrated Humanities Program of the University of Kansas where he studied under Professors John Senior and Dennis Quinn. He then spent 28 years as a solitary Carthusian monk, living ultimately at the Grande Chartreuse in the French Alps. He appears in the film “Into Great Silence” which documents life at the Grande Chartreuse. Well versed in Contemplative theology, Fr Robert is at present a priest of the Santa Rosa Diocese where he is Parochial Administra-tor of St Anthony’s in Mendocino.

2 - 12 “The Old Testament and Jewish Roots of the

Sacrifice of the Mass”

Fr. Cameron will present on the Old Testament and Jewish Roots of the

Sacrifice of the Mass with the hope that the better we understand the

Old Testament roots from which the Mass came forth, the better we

will understand and appreciate the Mass.

Rev. Cameron Faller, M.A.

Fr. Cameron is in his fourth year as a priest for the Archdiocese of San Francis-co. He is currently serving as the priest-secretary for Archbishop Cordileone and the vocation director for the Archdiocese. He served as the associate pas-tor of Church of the Epiphany and as a chaplain and theology teacher at Arch-bishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. He was born and raised in Marin County, and he was studying engineering before he decided to follow God’s call to enter priestly formation. He complet-ed the majority of his seminary studies at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park where he received a master’s degree in theology and divinity.

Session 2 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

2 - 11 “Scriptural Roots of the Priesthood”

We have heard the biblical phrase, “You are a priest forever, in the

line of Melchizedek”. But what does that mean? Why does the Cath-

olic priesthood of the New Law find its roots in this ancient line in the

Old Testament? How did the people of the Old Testament understand

the priesthood? This seminar helps participants reflect on the vital

role of the priesthood and its importance for believers today.

Rev. John Boettcher

Holy Mass 9:00 AM

As Santa Rosa Congress opens, we gather to pray, to cele-

brate and have our hearts filled with the Holy Spirit. This

day we ask that the love of Jesus affects us and place our

lives and ministry at the service of God’s people.

2 - 15 “The Liturgy of the Hours”

A theological, historical and practical introduction to the Church’s

official daily prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours. The General Instruc-

tion of the Liturgy of the Hours will be studied and an overview of

available resources will be provided.

Rev. Mr. John Plass

2 - 16 “Anointing of the Sick”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, “The Church believes

and confesses that among the seven sacraments there is one especially

intended to strengthen those who are being tried by illness, the Anointing

of the Sick: This sacred anointing of the sick was instituted by Christ

our Lord as a true and proper sacrament of the New Testament” (#1511).

This workshop examines the importance of this sacrament and its rele-

vance in our lives today.

Rev. Gary Sumpter

2 - 17 “Forming Credible Catholics - Seven Essentials”

Catholics, particularly youths, are leaving the faith in record numbers

based on the false perception that faith and reason are incompatible.

This workshop provides an overview of how to help Catholics combat

this trend as seen in the modules developed by Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., in

the areas of science, reason, faith and the Sacraments. The 7-Essentials

Modules are supplemental material designed for those involved with

forming ages 12 and older. Attendance is encouraged for all catechetical

leaders, parents, and all those concerned with the growing disaffiliation

of Catholics from the Church.

Janell Whaley

2 - 13 “The Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit”

How do they fit into my life?

The 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit are permanent dispositions which make

us docile to the promptings of the Spirit in us. They complete and

perfect the virtues of those who receive them. This workshop also

reflects on the fruits of the Holy Spirit which the tradition of the

Church lists twelve of them. Participants will be enriched by this

workshop on gifts and fruits of the Spirit in our lives.

Rev. David Jenuwine

2 - 14 “Sacred Music in the Life of the Church”

This workshop reflects on the beauty and wisdom of the Church when

she glorifies God in song during her sacred liturgy. How is music

chosen for Catholic Liturgy? Are their any instructions or rules from

the Church? St. Augustine wrote, “How I wept, deeply moved by

your hymns, songs, and the voices that echoes through your Church!”

Participants will appreciate how the musical tradition of the Church is

a treasure that forms an integral part of the solemn liturgy.

Plenary Session 2:45 PM - 3:45 PM (Gymnasium)

“LIVING A LITURGICAL LIFE OF WORSHIP, WITNESS AND COMMUNION”

Vatican II described the split between faith professed and daily life as one of the most serious errors of

our time. What is the relationship between the faith we profess and how we live each day? What should

be the connection between worship and the world? This session examines how the recovery or renewal of

“the spirit of the Liturgy” as divine worship and as the consecration for mission, can help Catholics over-

come the division between what we profess to believe and how we live.

El sacramento del matrimonio es un complemento entre la

pareja de hombre y mujer.

Talleres En Español

2 - 52 “Sacramento Del Bautismo, El Primer Sacramento”

Ramon and Esther Padilla

Mr. Dominic Figueroa, B.A.

¡Los adultos jóvenes son bienvenidos!
