New Water Treatment Plant Set to Open Layout & Design By: Shannon Oake Council is very pleased with the progress of the new water treatment plant. All equipment is installed and we are now into the pre-start up stage. This process involves testing and disinfecting all tanks and equipment and requires the cooperation of all contractors. We are very proud of our water plant employees, contractors, and funding partners who have been dedicated to this project. Over the next few weeks, as the water flows through the plant and the distribution system, residents may notice some discolouration of the water until all systems are fine tuned. The plant, which cost over $12 million, is capable of producing 1500 gallons per minute and is equipped with a security system. Once the plant is operational the Town will be holding a grand opening with tours open to the public. Notices will be posted on the Town’s website at www.clarenville.net and in the Packet. Clarenville has established a committee, the Random Age Friendly Communities, which includes broad representation. Being an Age Friendly Community means appropriate, affordable and accessible transportation, housing, support services and opportunities to participate in healthy aging, spiritual, social, recreational activities in a safe and secure environment.

Municipal government and community groups are two of the key influences within our community. We must ensure that municipal government and community organizations have a strong voice to communicate those strengths and challenges.

You are invited as residents of our community to become part of a community based organization which will focus on making Clarenville the most age friendly community in our Province.

The World Health Organization and the Public Health Agency of Canada are collaborating to develop age friendly towns and cities. The outcome will be a guide consisting of a set of markers/values for an age friendly community. Clarenville has been selected to participate with other Canadian rural communities.

As part of the Town's beautification enhancement, a Clarenville Community Gardening Competition was held in the summer of 2007. Nominations took place throughout the summer and some beautiful gardens were

in the running. The garden of John and Blanche Preston located at 11 Strong’s Road was chosen as the winner. The Town congratulates the Prestons on an absolutely beautiful garden and a big thank you to all other nominees.

Pic Goes Here

The Town of Clarenville recognizes Garry Gosse for his 31 years of service to our town. Garry was hired with the Town as a Recreation Director / Stadium Manager in 1976 after graduating from a Recreation Leadership Program.

Garry remembers when there was 1 ballfield, two playgrounds and a tennis court. Today, we have 3 ballfields, 6 playgrounds, 2 skateboard parks, 3 outdoor volleyball courts, 15km of trails, and a soccer pitch. Garry has been involved in expanding the summer program to day camps, field trips and special events. “I have been very fortunate to work for councils and a recreation association interested in the well being of our citizens,” says Garry.

Shoal Harbour Causeway Trail Grand Opening Hike

There is no better place to see the sun rise over Random Island than on the soon-to-be-opened Causeway Trail around Shoal Harbour. This trail has been the focus of much volunteer and Town effort over the past two years. The brainchild of the Shoal Harbour Enhancement Committee, a group of community minded citizens, this two kilometre trail stretches around the perimeter of Harbour Drive along the newly-built causeway pedestrian way, across a beautiful pedestrian bridge, and up a lighted stairway to a large landing complete with newly installed interpretive signage. The project is now complete!

As part of the trail project, green spaces have been created on Balbo Drive (grass, benches, hanging flower pots) and at the foot of the Shoal Harbour River near the bridge (picnic table and benches).

You are cordially invited to the official opening, scheduled for Sunday, November 25 at 2pm on the deck above the stairway. The opening will be followed by a walk around the trail with a hot-dog barbecue, on the deck. (In the event of rain the hotdogs will be served in the Odd-fellows Hall.)

New directional signage has been installed on all trails throughout our trail system. We will also soon be installing new trail map signs on each of the trails. Drop by the Town Hall and get a copy of the new trail system brochure or visit the trail system website www.clarenville.net/trails.

For more information on our trails or enhancement projects contact Garry Gosse and 466-7731 or email: [email protected].

Additional street lights have been installed on Shoal Harbour Drive. The remaining section of the road, as well as traffic lights at the intersection of Shoal Harbour Drive and Manitoba Drive will be completed in the 2008 budget year.

The snow will soon be flying! Residents are reminded that vehicles that hinder or impede snow clearing may be ticketed, towed and/or impounded at the owner's expense. Residents and businesses removing snow must not impede traffic by leaving the snow on the road.

Motorists are asked to be aware of realignment of the intersection at Balbo Drive and Harbour Drive. Changes are being made for safety reasons. To see a drawing of the new intersection visit www.clarenville.net.

Every Saturday morning many yard sale signs pop up on utility poles and at intersections. Unfortunately not all of these signs are being taken down once the sales are over and this is creating an unsightly mess. Once your yard sale is completed, you must remove your signs.

In day-to-day living, disasters may seem a distant possibility. Yet disasters such as floods, hurricanes, chemical spills or power failures can occur at anytime in any community, including ours.

Expect the unexpected and plan for it. Knowing what to do when a disaster strikes will help you better control the situation and will help you to recover more quickly.

No community is equipped to handle all the demands of a catastrophe. Help your community by preparing yourself.

Make sure everyone in your family knows what to do before, during and after an emergency.

Set up a family meeting this week to discuss how you can best prepare for an emergency. Have your own plan.

For more information on preparedness, visit the Red Cross website at www.redcross.ca or visit the Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada at www.psepc.gc.ca.
