Letter from theEditor

It’s time for a weekend getaway! We’ve got you covered in luxury from your luggage all the way to your destination. While Santa Barbara is basically perfect in every way, it’s refreshing to occasionally treat ourselves to a place near equal in perfection; it allows us to appreciate our home even more – especially when this weekend paradise is just an afternoon’s drive away. Malibu!

We made our way to Malibu’s El Matador Beach in Sunshine State Of Mind, showing off So De Mel Swimwear’s yet-to-be-launched collection of bikinis! And somewhere between playing on the beach, shopping, and gelato, we

planned a whole weekend in Malibu for you! Malibu Staycation fills you in on our favorite places to shop, brunch (with organic food and a view), shop some more, and sleep (post-spa, of course).

This month’s Jet Set Go even makes the least enjoyable part of vacation an art. We put together a few of the most versatile yet luxurious pieces, plus packing tips from the pros, so you can be on your way down the coast in minutes.

We’re all about taking spontaneous trips, and Going MIA does just that! Menswear takes a drive down the coast as well with sharp looks that command an impulsive day

off. You’re not a local until you keep a Louis Vuitton bag of swimwear and beachy vibes in your backseat.

And we all know it’s not a vacation without the wine. If you’re looking for a longer weekend, we introduce you to Pyrenees Winery — the only wine from out of county that will be attending the California Wine Festival. If you’re looking for something local to top off your weekend, travel no further than an Urban Wine Trail founder, Carr Winery, right here in the Funk Zone.

This August issue will be our third in print and our team is so excited to be sharing it with you!

What do you think of when you think of Oregon? I have a pretty good feeling that your first idea wasn’t wine, but it will be soon! here is a winery

that is slowly taking over Oregon. Located in the Umpqua Valley, sits a 30-acre estate that is changing

the game. Pyrenees Winery started out a little untraditional and it’s wine speaks for itself.

Owner, Robert Stryk, began his career in politics, mainly as a Washington D.C

lobbyist. While visiting Northern California and tasting throughout Napa

Valley, Robert fell in love with wine. A client was selling a winery in a small part of

Oregon, Robert jumped on the opportunity.

30-acres is small in comparison to many of the wineries we see here in Santa Barbara, but Robert loves that he

and his team can nurture each vine.

Page 10: Santa Barbara Life & Style - August 2014

What makes Oregon wine different from Santa Barbara?

“The Umpqua Valley, especially the Umpqua River that the winery sits along, produces some great grapes. They are so dynamic. The river system gives off amazing nutrients to the grapes which gives the wine it’s complexity. The first temperanillo grapes were brought into the Umpqua Valley and can grow the really warm Rhone varietals. The weather gives the Cabernet, Merlot, and Syrah’s the warmth they need to really develop nicely.”

Washington DC to Oregon is a big jump, how do the two correlate?

“Wine reminds me a lot of politics. You have to nurture the grapes like you nurture politics. You have to nurture where you stand on issues, research where you grow, see where you stand. Wine is

a commodity that is grown by God, we have no control over it except to nurture it.

Like with finding new customers, we have them sample it like people sample politicians’ ideas. If they like it, they will trust it, and hopefully keep coming back.”

Now that you’ve been in the wine business for a while now, is this easier than your lobbying days?

“Oh no. This is the toughest industry I’ve ever been in. I am really fascinated by the management side of wine. People tend to think that wine is a lifestyle first, then a business. It is definitely a business for me, it’s not easy. It is something you really need to be involved in before you can make it a lifestyle.”

Your wines are highly rated, so you must be doing something right.

“I wouldn’t call myself an artist by any means, but my team is. I allow them to express who they are and what they do in the wine. We want to set ourselves apart from the other wineries. We only produce small batches of wine, we want to focus on the quality. We do everything organically and are big on quality control. What ever rainfall or moisture comes from the weather, that is what our grapes will get. The river gives them fullness and makes the grapes robust. It is an effort by all my staff and family. Our bottles are hand-labeled so you can be sure that each member has their fingerprints on the bottle when it is bought.“

Our bottles are hand-labeled so you can be sure that each member has their fingerprints on the bottle when it is bought.“

Now that you’ve made a name for yourselves, you are starting to expand throughout Oregon. What can we expect from these new tasting rooms?

“People are being drawn to the region for our wine, they are making this drive just for us. We wanted to get a bigger

audience. It’s exciting, it reminds me of the wine renaissance down in Northern California. We opened a tasting room in Eugene. It acts like a classic tasting room from 9:00am-5:00pm, then during after hours, we have a mixologist that creates cocktails out of the wine and champagne. He incorporates different flavors and herbs to bring out different notes in each blend.”

Even though Pyrenees Winery is located in Oregon, it is making quite a mark on the California wine scene. For the past two years, Pyrenees has been the only Oregon

winery to be featured at the California Wine Masters. And during the blind taste testing, they won the right to be served at the tables of all winemakers and celebrities. Needless to say, Robert is doing something very right.

Robert is in his second year at the Santa Barbara Wine Festival and it definitely won’t be his last. His wine is only sold in the tasting rooms and winery, so if you miss him at this year’s Wine Festival, keep your eyes open for him next year and try a little bit of Oregon luxury.

StaycationMALIBU

Sometimes it is so easy to get stuck in the day-to-day.

Work a few days, play on weekends, repeat. It can also be easy

to forget we live in a two-hour radius from some of the most

sought after loctations on Earth (including our beautiful Santa

Barbara). If you’re finding yourself in a rut and yearning for a

quick little getaway, we have your weekend trip already planned.

Pack your bags and head down to Malibu!

Now being a Malibu girl myself, I may be a little

biased, but Malibu seems to be constantly getting better and better. From the shopping to the organic eats, the spoils are aplenty.

Let’s begin our getaway by checking in. My hotel pick has to be the Malibu Beach Inn. Placed right on the world famous, Carbon Beach (nicknamed “Billionaire’s Beach”), the hotel has breathtaking ocean views and access to a private beach that doubles as a celebrity hot spot.

Whatever fitness remedy gets your heart pumping, I challenge you to find anything more luxurious than a private training program on Carbon Beach. Malibu Beach Inn offers a variety of classes including yoga, Pilates, MELT, or - if you are really into

sweating it out - boot camp. We recommend the Thai Yoga and Pilates!

After a one-on-one session, soothe your muscles and relax your mind in the ocean front spa. Overlooking the sand and water, choose from over ten massages for the ultimate form of relaxation. Whether you are aching for a private massage or enjoying a romantic getaway with your honey, there is something perfect for everyone.

After treating your muscles, turn over and treat yourself to the latest spa luxury, the Hydra Facial. This facial delivers instant results without leaving your skin red or blotchy like a classic facial, good news for us since we don’t want to hide indoors all day...there is shopping to do!

Fully rejuvenated, take a walk down your private beach to the Malibu Pier for a bite to eat. Located at the end of the pier, Malibu Farm Cafè mixes rustic dining with organic deliciousness. The food is all locally grown from family farms in Malibu, and the wine comes from Santa Barbara wine country (so, obviously, we know the wine is good).

Everything is fresh and beautifully presented. We tried the vegetable chopped salad with avocado, the chicken ricotta bacon burger and (of course we tried the drinks) the white sangria (which is actually green because of the

herbs). The salad is fantastic: kale, beets, butternut squash, and chick peas with a light citrus vinaigrette dressing. The chicken ricotta bacon burger was so good - and all very filling! I split these two plates with my girl friend and it was almost too much food. The view off the pier is unlike anything you’ve seen, surfers to your right and Santa Monica to your left. If you meander over for breakfast, get the quinoa oatmeal with coconut milk. You will dream about it.

Malibu Farm has also just announced they will be open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays if you need a second fix!

Finally, in the void hours between lunch and dinner, you can either lay on the beach or head down the street for some of the best shopping you’ve ever experienced. Within the past five years, the Lumber Yard has grown to feature some of the best boutiques around. Beautifully laid out, with a scattering of great restaurants throughout, some of our favorite shopping spots include Alice + Olivia, Maxfield, and Planet Blue.

Planet Blue was the first boutique of its kind in Malibu and has since expanded to Santa Monica, Venice, and Beverly Hills. Its mix of boho chic beach culture and sought after designers, makes it one of Malibu’s best places to shop.

If you want to dress as the locals do, this is the perfect place.

After all the hard work shopping, stop by Grom Gelato located across from the Lumber Yard. With only two places in the US to try it (Malibu and New York!) it is one of the most sought after gelato eateries in the nation. We have yet to try a flavor we didn’t like, so go wild. If you’re like us and only ate gelato during your semester abroad in Italy, it will take you right back.

It’s hard to find a reason to leave our little oasis in Santa Barbara, but sometimes we need a little change of pace. What better place to have a mini-escape than Malibu.

Page 77: Santa Barbara Life & Style - August 2014

With our golden coasts and famous wine

regions, it is easy to see why people flock

to us in Santa Barbara. While the Funk

Zone has recently become one of the most popular places

to wine, dine, and visit, it has also added many new tasting

rooms to our Urban Wine Trail.

Founded in 2012, the Urban Wine Trail was created

to strengthen the tight bond between the wineries in

downtown Santa Barbara by creating a network to promote

one anothers’ businesses. We sat down with the very good-

looking Ryan Carr, owner of Carr Winery and chairman of

the Urban Wine Trail, to see how the initiative has evolved.

AUGUST 2014 | 77

Page 78: Santa Barbara Life & Style - August 2014

How did you first get involved with wine?

I managed 15 vineyards throughout Santa Barbara county, growing grapes and farming. In 1999, I got a handful of grapes from a friend and it made about 10 cases of wine out of my garage, and it turned out pretty decent.

What makes Santa Barbara a place to grow wine? Santa Barbara is the best place for wine. There are so many different regions within Santa Barbara to grow grapes. I make wine in every appellation of Santa Barbara, it allows us to make an array of different varietals: Pinot Noir in the Santa Rita Hills, Rhone varietals in the center of Santa Ynez, Ballard Canyon Syrah and Viognier, Cab Franc and Sangiovese on the far east end. I’m able to work with all these characters in such a small area.

What inspired you to create the Urban Wine Trail?

The original wineries around here were Oreana, Santa Barbara Winery, Jaffers and Whitcraft. We threw a lot of parties and gained a lot of attention to the area. Back in 2007, we ended up getting bigger and moved to our new location. Everyone started gaining momentum. We were really the few wineries that were now a trail. So, we came together and decided to create a map and we put

together this little card and it wasn’t anything special but it was good enough to have something to hand out, so each winery could promote the other. Shortly after that, more wineries started showing up.

Now that the Funk Zone has expanded, how has it affected the Trail?

We started with 18 wineries and now are up to 25 wineries. It’s full blown wine country down here.
