Letter from theEditor

Do you ever have evenings where you feel like getting dressed up but staying home? That’s the feeling that inspired the editorial “The Picture of Elegance.” There’s nothing more elegant than lounging around the Riviera Mansion while wearing floor length gowns and the most gorgeous jewelry. A million dollars worth of Jewelry by Gauthier was used in the making of this editorial!

For those upcoming dinner parties, impress your guests with a cheese platter that is as beautiful as it is delicious. In “The Perfect Platter” we do the pairing work for you and present you with the perfect cheese board for every occasion.

If springtime in Paris sounds appealing to you (I don’t know why it wouldn’t),

read “Paris Is Always A Good Idea” where we fill you in on a few favorites from our recent getaway to the city of shopping and macarons.

We also recently enjoyed springtime in Paris, but at the Bacara! Relive the extravagant Royal Ball in our event recap. If you were there, look for yourself in the photos!

While the Gauthier black pearl bracelet and ring combo is clearly the perfect Mothers’ Day gift, we’ve curated a selection of gifts to treat your mother with on May 11th.

I hope you enjoy looking through this issue just as much as we enjoyed creating it!

We love the idea of changing the vessel for your

cheese from the typical bread or cracker, to the

tangy sweetness of a dried blood orange. This

works best for creamy cheeses such as La Tur, an

incredible three milk cheese from Italy.

As C’est Cheese’s best selling

goat’s milk cheese, Humboldt

Fog appeals to the eye and the

mouth almost equally. Covered

in vegetable ash (which also runs

through the center), its flavor is

creamy and tangy with a balance

of strong and mild on the blue

cheese scale. Balancing the

flavor of the blue, Golden Valley

sweetness from the sheep’s milk.

St. Agur, C’est Cheese’s best selling

blue is creamy, yet its fluffy texture

allows it to melt in your mouth; the

perfect choice for a dessert blue.

A bold platter of aged cheeses

and fine meat pair great with

the bold flavor of whiskey. The

Pittig Gouda, aged four years,

has hints of both nuttiness and

sweetness. Its flavor represents

everything an aged gouda should

be - without being overly bitter -

and is punctuated, ever so lightly,

with scotch in the finish. A softer

cheese with just as bold of flavors,

Red Hawk by Cowgirl Creamery

is washed with a brine solution

causing mild pungency and beefy

flavor. Add meats (we suggest

something a little spicy), olives, and

sourdough bread and this platter

has all the elements of bold flavor.

Gourmet Cheese: have two words ever coexisted more to stir the hearts of any foodie? C’est Cheese, Santa Barbara’s premiere gourmet food and cheese store has been educating Santa Barbara in the art of eating cheese for nearly ten years. Located at 825 Santa Barbara Street and locally owned by Michael and Cathryn Graham, the small market is ready to expand into a full breakfast and lunch cafe. Only the finest flavor of cheeses will make it into the shops menu of pastries, crepes, and sandwiches--but they won’t stop there. Fresh salads, soups, coffees, and eventually wines will also be served in the new expansion cafe. They had our heart at breakfast grilled cheese.

Sweet Thing

On a sweeter note, summertime

is around the corner and a light

array of cheeses paired with

the sweet and tangy flavors of

fruit make this platter a sheer

delight. Tumbleweed walks

the line between Cantal and

Chedder with a deeply complex

and satisfying result. Selles-Sur-

Cher, ripened to a sweet and

salty flavor, is a soft goat cheese

that compliments the tartest of

fruits. La Tur, a blend of sheep,

goat, and cow milk, is best paired

with dessert. Serve any of these

cheeses with dried apricots,

cherries, blood oranges and honey

for the perfect dessert tray.

PARIS IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA.

58 | Santa Barbara Life & Style Magazine

MAY 2014 | 59

The SBLS team loves sharing (and maybe gloating?) all things Santa Barbara. But sometimes we get a little restless in perfection. I recently got the travel bug and decided it was time to spend some Euro in a place even

the biggest fashionista falls to her knees: Paris. For those of you who have been to, are dreaming of, or are grabbing your passports now, here are the top places we recommend you seeing without being a complete tourist. Since there are a million and one things to do in the city of love, we laid out a full day of sights, eats, and treats.

WRITTEN BY LAURA REYNOLDS

I arrive at Charles de Gaulle Airport and immediately need champagne and a croissant. Stereotypical, I know, but until you have a pain au chocolat fresh and warm from a Parisian pâtisserie, you really haven’t lived. First stop, Pierre Hermé (72, rue Bonaparte,

75006). Try not to drool on the glass as you walk in. I haven’t had a bad thing in there yet but I also have a bit of a sweet tooth. If you are in the mood for macarons,

try the caramel! Thankfully, in Paris, walking is the norm (unlike in California where we drive a block down the street for a Starbucks... is that just me?) so I binge on tarts without feeling as bad as I should.

I go take in some sights, then run over to Avenue Montaigne for some must-have shopping that will

make all my friends jealous. Because shopping can be draining, when you need a little pick-me-up after, head to the Tuileries for coffee

or head to Pâtisserie La Parisienne (Rue Monge 28,

75005) for a second round of macarons.

Exhausted, I head back to the suite at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée Paris (25 Ave. Montaigne Paris, 75008... seriously, stay here) for a good sprawl out on my bed and to think about what I am going to have for dinner. Clearly, wine, food, and shopping are all I ever think about in Paris.

If you plan a trip later in the year, the Peninsula Hotel is unveiling their extravagant new hotel in Paris. It took a handpicked team of professionals over 6 years to restore the old Hotel Majestic site. It boasts to be the best hotel in the city, so of course, put it on your list of must-haves.

I found out about this new(ish) restaurant that opened up in January from one of the locals. Blue Valentine (13 rue de la Pierre

Levée - 75011 Paris) is a little boutique restaurant that has people from all over scrambling to get a table. It has a mix of casual dining and elegant presentation that has every magazine and newspaper raving.

It’s new enough that there aren’t as many tourists so you can still have a quiet and authentic experience. I recommend the lamb, and any cocktail on their menu. If I was able to try them all that night, I would have, but the last thing on my list is the most important and I must still be coherent to do so.

“I recommend the lamb, and any cocktail on their menu.”

After a dinner that you will be dreaming of for Lord knows how long, it is always appropriate to buy a bottle or two of Dom Pérignon for dessert and head to the Eiffel Tower. This whole act sounds terribly cliché but if you haven’t done it yet, just trust me. Every hour on the hour, the Eiffel Tower twinkles for ten minutes, and every hour on the hour I somehow act like I am five years old. There are benches all around the tower for a perfect view, and

the perfect place to pop a little Champagne and gossip with your girlfriends (or snuggle with a Paris hottie, no judgement).

While it’s hard to pin point just a few places to visit, that’s really the exciting part of Paris. Everyone has their favorite hot spots, these are just a few our team thinks will make your trip a little bit more glamorous than the rest. *

Royal Recap

Guests of the Pacific Pride Foundation’s Royal Ball at Bacara Resort were greeted by a 40-foot Eiffel tower in the courtyard and enough disco balls throwing rainbows on the walls to last long into the night. Designed by Merryl Brown Events, the night featured go-go dancers, performers on stilts, a flamenco performance by Timo Nunez, and an outstanding midnight drag show by Deja Ré that was the highlight of the evening. And while the attending

attire would have been delicious enough, 300 guests savored french food and petit fours, along with a dreamy candy bar complete with every kind of unmentionable candy shape imaginable. DJ Derek Monteiro spun beats drawing the who’s who of Santa Barbara out of their cabanas and onto the dance floor while the evening celebrated community, LGBT love, and all things Paris, glitter, and body paint. It was the place to be and a night of luxury to be remembered.
