    Class - VI LESSON 18 : Dealing with wastes (WORKSHEET - 1 ) SUB : SCIENCE

    Important notes :

    1) Non-toxic waste : Harmless to human beings, plants, animals and their environment. Most

    domestic waste is nontoxic

    2) Toxic waste or hazardous waste : Harmful and creates several health problems in man and

    domestic animals. Indutrial waste, biomedical waste and electronic wastes are usually toxic.

    It pollutes air, water and soil.

    3) Pathogenic waste : The waste containing disease causing microorganisms. Hospital waste

    usually contains harmful microorganisms

    4) Domestic waste : The waste generated by household activities. It includes waste food,

    fruits, vegetables, their peels, paper, plastic, rubber, glass pieces etc and waste water from

    kitchens, bathrooms and toilets.

    5) Agriculture waste : It is the waste generated in farms and livestock shelter. It includes animal

    dung, crop residue and waste generated by fruits and vegetable processing.

    6) Industrial waste : It includes coal ash, paper scrap, metallic scrap, acids, oil etc.

    7) Community wastes :The solid wastes from school, office, shops, hospitals, streets,

    playgrounds, public garden is called community waste. Community waste includes garbage

    and rubbish.

    8) Garbage : It is the organic part of the waste . It gets decomposed in few days. It includes peel

    of fruits and vegetables, leftover food and garden litter.

    9) Rubbish : It includes plastic, paper, polythene bags, glass pieces, rubber, clothes etc.

    10) Municipal solid waste : The domestic waste and community waste collectively is called

    municipal solid waste. It is called so because waste in urban areas is managed by municipal

    authorities.

    11) Sewage sludge : The remains left after the treatment of domestic and industrial waste.

    12) Liquid waste : This includes effluents from industries, tanneries, textile, chemical and

    pharmaceutical industries, sewage sludge and water from kitchen and toilets.

    13) Gaseous waste : Gases released by chemical industries and vehicles are gaseous waste. It

    includes harmful gases like sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and ammonia.

    14) Electronic waste or e waste : It consists of wastes from discarded electronic parts from

    computers, televisions, music system etc.

    15) Biomedical or hospital waste : It is the waste generated in the hospitals, clinics and

    pathological laboratories.
