(R1/SMS) Lephalale – One of the fastest economically developing areas, Lephalale munici- pality, sealed a partnership with one of the oldest tried and tested distance learning institutions, UNISA, to bring UNISA services closer to the people of Lephalale. This partnership will cut “distance” out of distance learning of Unisa. Through this partnership, UNISA will roll out community engagement programme in Lephalale. Educators and learners will benefit as UNISA will hold workshops for educators of scarce and critical skills. Unisa will also conduct career guidance and also organise motivational sessions for Lephalale learners. Adults who enrolled for distance learning through UNISA will also benefit as UNISA has established a working relationship with Lephalale FET college to conduct some support pro- grammes at Lephalale FET college on Saturdays. UNISA indicated that they were arranging a Breakfast Briefing with local business houses to make sure that they, too, are brought on board. Lephalale municipality is the place where Eskom is building a six boiler dry-cooled coal-fired power station called Medupi, which is expected to be the largest dry-cooled coal- fired power sta- tion in the world. It is also the home of the Exxaro Resources limited’s Grootegeluk coal mine and a number of mines which are spread throughout the municipality. This economic profile of Lephalale municipality dictates that local people should be well skilled to equal the challenges and thus UNISA comes in handy. UNISA intends to build a video conference facility at Lephalale in the near future. This developmental partnership between Lephalale municipality and UNISA was formalised at Lephalale on Thursday 10 April 2014, where UNISA was represented by Mpho Rakoma, Somkgele Mnguni, Mohlaume Segoa and Nakedi Molokomme, Waterberg District municipality by Peter Makondo, manager in the office of execu- tive mayor while the host municipality was represent- ed by the manager respon- sible for communication and Public Participation, Nakampe Monyepao, and Education Portfolio Coun- cillor NJ Motebele who was also the acting Mayor for the day. Lephalale Municipality partners with UNISA From left to right: Nakampe Monyepao, Peter Makondo, Mahlaume Segoa, Nakedi Molokomme, Cllr John Motebele, Somkgele Mnguni and Mpho Rakoma. Thabazimbi – Thabazimbi Local Municipality trained the appointed Evaluation/Assessment committee members from 2-4 April 2014 on Policy and the Instrument as well as Management leadership. The need to develop and maintain a performance management systems (PMS) in municipalities was first identified during the drafting and approval of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 Chapter 7 deals exclusively with the local sphere of government and, inter alia, lists the objects and developmental duties of municipalities. As part of organizational transformation, TLM Management and Council resolved that the process of organizational structure review, placement of employees from one department to the other or from one job description to more complex job descriptions should take place. Central to the above is the building of capacity to all levels of the organization and proper grading posts. As the results of the major transformation, departments will start performing job evaluation/assessment of their employees. All these are guided by the Circular 29/2012 from Salga as the employer representative. DA besoek Raphuti Northam – The internal roads of Northam got a facelift recently when the Thaba- zimbi Local Municipality jumped in to repair and upgraded some of the internal roads to ensure safe travelling in the future. “In terms of our future projects, our drive will always be to maintain our road net- works, as without maintenance, these assets will deteriorate,” said Lesego Modis- enyane, Divisional Head Public Works. The streets of Caley, Ramoabi and Botha were some of the repaired and construct- ed streets. Ramoabi street transverses mainly through urban areas with residential houses and retail holdings present along most of the route. It is a single carriageway surfaced road. The roads from R510 (Brits and Swartklip/Dwaalboom) and ends at R510 (Rustenburg and Thabazimbi) the road is approximately 3.1 km in length. The other repaired areas include Northam intersection on Botha and Caley streets which is approximately 600m in length. The municipality is currently grading the streets and roads at Skierlik, Smashblock, Northam and Leeupoort. South African National Parks (SANParks) re- ceived R3.5 million on Tuesday 22 April 2014 to aid its fight against rhino poaching. As the enabler of the Adopt So Our Rhino Don’t Die campaign, Bavaria Brewery initiated the historic fundraising collaboration between SA’s Big 5 retailers: Woolworths, Spar, Massmart, Pick ‘n Pay and divisions of the Shoprite Checkers Group to raise the money over sev- eral months. This funds will be held in a ring-fenced account for strict utilisation by SANParks’ rhino anti- poaching programmes and interventions. According to SANParks, more than 3000 rhino have been poached in South Africa since 2000 - more than half of these incidents took place at the Kruger National Park. SANParks spokes- person Reynold Thakuli said that the money will come in handy as anti-rhino poaching is an expensive exercise. South Africa signed an anti-poaching agree- ment with Mozambique a major transit route for horn trafficked to Asia, last week. An estimated 293 rhino have been killed in the country since the beginning of the year. SANParks Acting CEO, Abe Sibiya, said “I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Bavaria Brewery and to each of the partici- pating retailers for their commitment to SAN- Parks, which marks a formidable partnership in the fight against rhino poaching. Roger ter Horst, Market Development Manager of Ba- varia Brewery Netherlands, concluded, “We are proud to align ourselves with industry part- ners who share our belief that conservation and preserving the rhino heritage is not only a global priority, but our responsibility as in- dustry leaders.” SANParks gets R3.5m for rhino conservation Roger ter Horst, Market Development Manager of Bavaria Brewery Netherlands and Abe Sibiya, Acting CEO of SANParks, at the handover of nearly R3 million for SANParks Rhino Conservation from the Adopt so Our Rhino Don’t Die campaign. Rustenburg – Fun-loving residents with big hearts can look forward to the second Greek ball in aid of the Grace Help Centre presented at the Hellenic Hall in Watsonia Avenue on 28 June this year. The event which is wholly sponsored by the Greek community, commences at 19:00 with a buffet promising Greek cuisine to satisfy even the fussiest palate, as proven at previous such evenings held locally. The charity auction is the reason for everyone being there, and a guest appearance by Kyk Net’s Anina Peens is a great attraction about which the organisers are very excited. Live music by local Niko Pocnayotou and his bouzouki will have the feet tapping all evening and a cash bar is available, but the highlight of the evening is bound to be the customary Greek plate smashing which last year had a lady remarking she attended especially as she could not smash plates at home! Plate smashing is a traditional folk custom formerly associated with mourning, but in popular culture has become part of celebratory occasions like weddings, although nowadays specially produced plaster plates are used more readily as they are less expensive and dangerous and break more easily. Another modern variation of the custom is throwing flowers at entertainers and other diners. Dress is formal and tickets are available at R150 per person.
