The site of the Residency belonged toSheikhzada Nawab Asafuddaula whostarted the construction of Residencyin the year AD 1775 for the Britishresident and his staff. It was completedby Nawab Saadat Ali Khan in AD1800.

These structures suffered heavydamages due to constant shelling andcounter shelling during the first war ofIndian Independence in 1857. Somewere completely razed to the groundand now in ruins. To understand theclear picture of the Residency, anexcavation was carried out which hasbrought to light a number of buriedstructures including the well plannedsewer system, besides remains of thematerial culture of that period. The1857 Memorial Museum has been setup here to depict an accuratepresentation of the First War ofIndependence of 1857 in Awadh.

Dilkusha Kothi and garden is locatedon the outskirts of the old Lucknowcity which now stands in thecantonment area. It was built by GoreOusely, a friend of the Nawab SaadatAli Khan around AD 1800 andexpanded during the reign of theNawab Nasir-ud-din Haider (AD1827-1937). It was initially used as ahunting lodge and subsequentlyconverted into a summer resort.

Chini ka Rauza is the tomb of MullaShukrullah Shirazi or “Afzal Khan Alami”.He was the Vazir in the court of EmperorShah Jahan.The popular name of Chini-ka-Rauza has the roots in its unique glazed tiledecoration. The tomb stands on the bank ofriver Yamuna in between Ram Bagh andItimad-ud-Daulah’s tomb. Most probably,the Tomb was constructed between AD1630 to 1639 during the life time of thebuilder. The lotus pond of the westernfaçade testifies the influence of Taj Mahal’sarchitecture on Chini-ka-Rauza. The kioskis located at the north western corner of thegarden enclosure. It is a three storiedstructure of brick with red sandstoneencasement. The kiosk is crowned by abeautiful cupola, once embellished withenameled tiles and carvings of geometricaland floral designs.

The ruins at Ramnagar or Ahichchhatra consist of an ancient fortress spread overa large area covering several kilometers. The enclosed walls of the fort form anirregular right angled triangle. The fort has thirty-four bastions, a few have beenbuilt by a Rohilla chieftain called A.U. Mohammed Khan. Human habitationsstarted here about three thousand years before and since then this place has beenoccupied continuously.

The site at Ramnagar or ancientAhichchhatra represents extensivemounds of various sizes. The highestmound rises to a height of 23 m from thesurrounding plains. The place is known asAhichchhatra and Adhicchatra in ancientliterature, the capital of North Panchala.Excavations here brought to light a stupaand a temple and also revealed a culturaldeposit ranging from Ochre ColouredPottery Period (before circa 1200 BC)onwards to the medieval period.

Behta Bridge, Lucknow

The bridge over the Behta River andthe Siva temple were constructed byMaharaja Tikait Rai between AD 1786and 1788 during the reign of NawabAsaf-ud-daula (AD 1775-1798). Thetemple is built of lakhauri bricks withlime plaster and has stucco decorations.This magnificent temple is octagonal inplan with fluted dome, erected on aslightly raised platform within anenclosure wall.

The arched bridge is similar to thetemple in architecture. It is one of theoldest bridges of Lucknow, having twooctagonal pillars in the shape of a triplestoried minaret on either end withseven octagonal and rectangular sizedpillars on both sides. There are twoPersian marble tablet inscriptions onthe pillars with the date and the nameof the builder.

It was built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula(AD 1775-97) and the design wasprepared by the French General ClaudeMartin who was a courtier in the courtof Awadh. This three storied buildingwas specially built for entertainingimportant emissaries of the BritishGovernment. Whenever the change ofBritish Resident to the court of Awadhtook place, the new incumbent used toreside here till he was formally placedas a British Resident in the Residencyof Lucknow.

The monument is built of lakhauribricks in lime plaster and has stuccodecorations. This well ventilated twostoried building consists of large hallswith high ceilings, spiral staircases andimposing double columns showingFrench style of architecture. The largehall is decorated with blue colouredtiles, specially brought from France.The building was provided with wellventilated windows.

Sravasti was the capitalof the ancient Kosalakingdom. It is located onthe bank of river Rapti.During the days ofBuddha, Sravasti reachedthe peak of its prosperityunder the able rule ofking Prasenjit. TheMahaparinirvana-Sutta,mentioned it as one ofthe six important citieswhere Buddha had alarge following.

Remains of Sravasti are situated at two nearby places called Sahet andMahet. Sahet represents the famous Jetavana area and was subjected toexcavations. Remnants of temples, stupas and monasteries have beenexposed here. The earliest available relics are few Kushana structuresand images.

Mahet, represents the fortified city of Sravasti and this huge area iscovered by mud ramparts. The ruins of two massive brick structures,known as Pakki-Kuti and Kachchi Kuti are located here. It is believedthat these were erected on the spot where the stupa of Anathpindakaonce stood.
