FIELD REPORT 10.22.2015

Location: Illinois Beach State Park

Date: Thursday, 22 October, 2015

Time: Approximately 0730am to 0900am, CST

Weather: Mostly cloudy, quite cold, clearing later

Present : Myself only

Sanjay’s Note: Certain portions of this Report may be more subjective in their aspect; the reader’s gracious

indulgence is requested. Not all of these phenomena are understood, yet are reported nonetheless as an integral

and vital portion of my own investigations.

Items Noted:

I returned to Illinois Beach State Park on Thursday, 22 October;1 the weather was mostly cloudy, with only

glints of sunlight in the sky over Lake Michigan. It was quite cold on the beach, but cleared later.

As I approached the carpark, I observed a large, dark figure in the marsh grasses west of the beach; I glanced at

it briefly, and then slammed on the brakes.

The figure was moving.

It did not bob up and down, as a human might; it moved smoothly and easily through the grasses.2 It was bulky

and heavy-looking; I reversed the engine and drove quickly onto the road nearby.

The figure was moving quickly, as though to get away; my heart was racing. As I pulled up alongside, I

realised the path on which it trod was slightly below the carpark, yet it towered over the Blueberry** and I

suddenly wondered if I was doing the right thing.

The car came closer; the figure did not turn, but continued moving forward, smoothly and silently.

I rolled down the window, and reached for the camera; I was not going to miss this one! 3

I slowed down; the figure turned towards me….

I observed a tall, heavily built man, wearing a dark, bulky jacket and hood…riding a skateboard.

Bloody hell!

I was so disappointed!

These photographs present views of the beach as I approached early in the morning; the colours of the sky, and

the landscape, were beautifully mysterious and calm as I entered the park.

The first photograph presents a view of the beach looking north from the stone-covered knoll; notice the

devastation and destruction caused by recent storms; the second photograph presents a view of the bluff, with

possible branch assemblies in the centre, beneath a large oak tree.

The man looked at me curiously; I realised I should speak, first.

“Sorry,” I said, “I thought you were someone else.”

The man smiled, and said, “No problem; everyone thinks I’m a Bigfoot out here.” 4

He turned and continued on his way, gliding smoothly along; I heard the crunch of gravel beneath the wheels.

I drove on; I wondered what the man’s words had meant.

I pulled into the carpark; there was a yellow taxicab in one of the stalls. The driver was polishing his shoes, and

listening to the radio; he smiled happily and said good morning, as I got out of my car. There was a strange

look in his eyes; he seemed somewhat dazed, or light-headed.

“Good morning,” I said in return, keeping my distance.

4 The implications of this statement should be carefully considered. Why anyone…well, your guess is as good as mine.

These photographs present views of two of the large, canine prints observed in the heavy, thick sand of the

beach;5 notice the depth of each print, and the wide-spread digital paws, as well as the clearly visible

metacarpal paws; I could not match their impression, no matter how I tried. For the purposes of this Report, it

should be noted that the soles of my boots measure exactly four and one-half inches wide (4.5in, or 11.43cm).

These photographs present views of the medium-scale branch assembly observed on the bluff, adjacent to the

new path I had observed, and accessed from the beach below. Notice the use of multiple component sizes and

shapes;6 due to the bleached effect of same, however, it is not possible to accurately determine component

species. Nonetheless, notice the installation of other components within the assembly, including a long,

partially curved and twisted branch with a portion of its bark stripped away. Although it is reasonable to

suggest EC as responsible for same, a human origin cannot be discounted from this perspective.

“You’ll get your boots wet,” the driver said. “There’s a lot of water out there.”

“They’re pretty good boots,” I said, “I’ll be okay.”

“Want me to come with you?” he asked.

5 It is reasonable to suggest, in context, Grey Wolf (Canis lupus); however, further research and data is needed. Corey Haas. Grey

components; multiplicity of component species; multiplicity of component sizes; and visually contrasting component species colours,

bark, and textures. To this may be added the application of long, slender components supporting large, heavier ones, and/or the

stripping of leaves and twigs from the components, although these are not always observed.

“No,” I answered, “Thank you.”

“Okay,” he said, “Lots of critters out there.” 7

I turned, and accessed the path to the beach. Either this is the strangest morning I’ve ever had, I thought to

myself, or I’ve stumbled into a new episode of The Twilight Zone.8

The beach was windswept and cold; no one else was there and I relished the solitude. From time to time I

stopped to photograph the landscape; the lake was a dull, steel-blue colour beneath the shredded, cloudy sky.

Far to the southeast, a glint of bright gold pierced the clouds.

I observed, on the stone-covered knoll, a new pile of driftwood where the spiral had been located; it appeared to

be artificial, probably of human origin. Nonetheless, it was rather picturesque, and I took several photographs.

As I approached the beach, I realised that the recent, severe storms had effected great damage to the area;9 10 a

wide swath of sand had crumbled into the water and looking north, I observed that the headland had collapsed

as well. The beach did not appear to have been accessed for some time; there were no clear, visible footprints

anywhere, although I observed several areas of passage, and widely deteriorated footprints, throughout. Nearly

without exception, most of the footprints, although bare, appeared human: they presented significant straddle

and turnout, and only minimal stride lengths.11

I walked slowly along the beach, taking in the colours and shapes of the water, the sand and the driftwood; had

the light been better, I thought, I might have made some good photographs.

I glanced at the sand; it was heavily packed and quite firm. My boots made little impact upon its surface; I

observed some rather large canine prints, and thought, “Say, those are some rather large canine prints.”

And then, I realised what I had observed.

I compared them to my boots, and photographed them together; the digital pads were spread wide, and the

metacarpal was also visible. I also observed that the prints were quite deeply impressed, at least an inch or so

(1in, or 2.54cm); I could not replicate their depth no matter how I tried.12 13

7 It is reasonable to suggest, in context, an oblique reference to EC; however, some things are best left alone. 8 The Twilight Zone was a television series which originally aired from 1959 to 1964, in which ordinary, every-day people found

These photographs present views of the collapsed headland at the north end of the beach; notice the still-living

trees now extended horizontally over the water, and the numerous piles of driftwood cast far up onto the sand.

These photographs present views of two unique driftwood pieces observed on the beach; the first image is that

of a root system, resembling nothing so much as a rather bleached dinosaur of some type. The second image

presents a driftwood knot washed by the waves; it is a unique sculpture, perhaps worthy of a New York gallery.

While investigating the canine prints, I observed a path leading up to the bluff, which I had not seen before; it

appeared well-travelled, and I decided to look around.

Coming up to the bluff, I observed a curiously fashioned, medium-scale branch assembly of driftwood, in

varying shapes and sizes; it was a rather bold construction, positioned in a swatch of beach grasses. It was

clearly artificial; however, I could not discount a human origin. Nonetheless, it did appear quite cleverly

contrived, and I took several photographs of it for later review.

A sudden flicker of movement caught my eye; two White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus)14 leaped

gracefully through the brush a few yards ahead, and disappeared from sight shortly thereafter. Their white tails

were raised high in the air, like signal flags; I wondered if I should see them again.

I looked across the wide, spreading grasses west of the bluff, dotted with many clumps of trees; I did not

observe any branch assemblies, but did notice signs of storm damage everywhere.

I returned to the beach, and continued walking along the sand; the wind had risen slightly, and the waves were

getting higher. As I approached the collapsed headland, I observed more of the enormous canine prints

continuing north along the sand as well.

And then, I turned around.15

I was being followed.16

It had happened before, and always in this location:17 a strong, vivid impression of something behind me,

walking slowly along the sand. Curiously, my impression was of a woman, with clear, white skin and long,

dark-brown hair, in a flowing, white dress; she was barefoot, walking along the edge of the water and singing to

herself. She did not look towards me but across the water; I did not know what she observed.18

I passed under the fallen trees of the collapsed headland, jutting into space over the water; the waves came in

over my boots, resulting in some rather damp feet. Nonetheless, I persevered.

I entered the north side of the beach; it was bare and windswept. The bluffs had been severely damaged, and

had receded much further inland than I had realised. Here, I observed very few prints, mainly deteriorated,

worn human feet with clear, noticeable straddle and turnout, and minimal stride lengths, as before. There were

no signs of the large, bipaedal tracks I had observed in August, and I wondered where they had gone.19

As I rounded a clump of driftwood, I observed something rather unusual on the sand, just below the bluff.

There was a small, tipi assembly, fashioned of driftwood, on the beach.20

Hot diggity dog!

I hurried forward; was this the work of EC? 21

I could not be certain; I examined the assembly carefully. The tipi was composed of only five pieces of

driftwood: a long, forked component supported a slanted ‘X’ arrangement, which then supported two other

components, in a second, larger slanted ‘X” arrangement, to form the overall assembly and tipi shape. It was

simply, and remarkably, fashioned; I admired its cleverness and utility from different angles, and took several

photographs for later review.

These photographs present vies and close-ups of the small tipi assembly observed at the north end of the beach,

composed of only five pieces of driftwood. In the first image, notice the forked branch which serves as the main

support component, into which the slanted ‘X’ configuration is positioned. The final two components, longer

and thinner than the others, are fitted into the slanted ‘X’ arrangement and form a second, larger slanted ‘X’

arrangement. The third image presents a view of the five component branches; the fourth image presents a

view of the end of the forked branch. Despite the weathered, bleached appearance of the driftwood, the skill

and complexity of this construction is remarkable; I have wondered, since I first observed it, if I might possess

an equal skill. I’m an architect, after all; you’d think I’d know how to do this.

As I was walking around the tipi, taking photographs, I glanced back towards the headland.

Something moved in the brush, just below it.22 23

I blinked, and looked again; it was gone. I did not know what it was; I had not seen it clearly.

It was time to be getting back; I began walking south along the beach to the carpark. I accessed the path up to

the bluff, and walked through the meadows beyond, where I found a wide, gravelled path winding through the

trees and scrub grasses.

I returned to the carpark; the yellow taxi was still there, but I did not observe the driver.

I retrieved my vehicle, and left the area.

Respectfully submitted,

FIELD REPORT 10.22.2015

SUMMARY

Substantiation of this Report may be provided by my own field work at Illinois Beach State Park, which began

in the summer of 201524 25 and which has now continued, at somewhat irregular intervals; further investigations

have been planned with Smith Jerrod, and others.

Further substantiation may be provided by published accounts on the BFRO website,26 and others;27 however, I

am unaware of other persons conducting research and/or field investigations in this area of Illinois.

The combination of physical, visual, audible and/or olfactory events described in this Report are as follows:

1. The curious remark made by the man on the skateboard;

2. The curious remark made by the taxi driver;

3. The possible medium-scale branch assembly, observed on the bluff above the beach;

4. The small tipi assembly, observed at the northern end of the beach;

5. The glimpse of movement in the brush, below the headland.

These behaviours, and the history of my own experience(s),28 may be considered sufficient to suggest the

presence of EC29 at Illinois Beach State Park, in the autumn of 2015.

A number of subjective events also occurred. While these cannot be considered conclusive evidence, neither

should they be discounted. Although it is reasonable to review the impact of non-objective stimuli in this

Report, such effects, while personally quite vivid and at times overwhelming, are nonetheless nearly impossible

to substantiate with any measure of certainty.
