FIELD REPORT 09.22.2014

Location: Area D

Date: Monday, 22 September, 2014

Time: 0800am to 0900am, EDT

Weather: Quite cold and chilly; sunny and clear

Present : Myself only

Sanjay’s Note: Certain portions of this Report may be more subjective in their aspect; the reader’s gracious

indulgence is requested. Not all of these phenomena are understood; they are included here, nonetheless, as an

integral and vital portion of my investigation.

Sanjay’s Note: Reference is made to several different, hidden trails at Area D; there are, in fact, four of them.

The first hidden trail leads directly into the swamp, and is accessed from the main path, opposite the slanted-

branch assembly. The second hidden trail passes through heavy cover into the Large Shelter in the high dunes,

and is accessed from the clearing, at the top of the high dune path. The third hidden trail skirts the edge of the

meadow, behind the (former) Nest location and under the trees, passing into the woods before becoming lost in

the dunes further to the west; I have not explored the third trail in its entirety, for various reasons. The fourth

trail leads directly west from the Large Shelter, but was not discovered until 16 May, 2014.

Items Noted:

I returned to Area D on Monday, 22 September,1 intending only to make a short visit; the weather was quite

cold and chilly, but with a fine, clear light with a sparkling, blue colour. Mine was the only vehicle in the

carpark as I pulled in; the general area felt quite deserted and forlorn, and I wondered if the recent start of deer

season may have effected same. There were no sounds from the ravine, nor any impression of something in the

brush; I entered the reserve straightaway.

These photographs present views of the signpost at the carpark; in the first image, notice the missing glyph

component, which I had photographed 18 September, only four days prior.

These photographs present the unusual tracks observed along the main path, which I could not identify save for

the large, canine print; it is reasonable to suggest, in context, Eastern Grey Wolf (Canis lupus) or a larger

species of domestic dog (Canis familiaris).

The first photograph presents a possible branch assembly, constructed about a fallen log; notice the strong

resemblance to a ‘star’ or ‘asterisk’ type. The second image presents my view of the shadow I observed being

cast upon the main path; my boots are oriented directly east, while the shadow is oriented almost directly south.

Notice the diffused, pale light and the blurred edges of same; no visible light source was observed.

I observed, almost immediately, that one of the branch components was missing from the glyph arrangement at

the signposts; I did not see it anywhere about.2 Additionally, the small branch assembly nearby appeared to

have been modified as well; I compared them with my photographs from my previous visit.

I set off on the main path into the reserve; again, I noticed that the woods were eerily quiet.3 There was not a

breath of wind, and I heard no sounds of wildlife moving about.

2 It is reasonable to suggest that, in context, someone may have collected it for use as a walking-stick. 3 The utter stillness and quiet of the woods has been observed, and commented upon, several times, by several persons; it is not

uncommon in conjunction with reported sightings and/or encounters. BFRO Author(s). Silent Woods. The Bigfoot Field

Researchers’ Organisation. http://s2.excoboard.com/exco/archive.php?ac=t&forumid=125336&date=02-24-2010&t=2120282-1. 24

I observed several strange tracks on the path which I could not positively identify; additionally, I observed some

rather large canine tracks as well, possible Eastern Grey Wolf (Canis lupus).4

At the large, slanted-branch assembly, the colour of the light changed.

I recall that I looked around me; although the sun was still rising in the east and the skies were clear, I seemed

to be walking in a different sort of light, whose source I could not clearly discern. The light seemed to be all

around me, as though it were a fine, pale mist of silver-grey colour, moving with me as I walked.5

I looked up through the trees; the sky was the strong, blue colour so typical of autumn in northern Michigan.

Nonetheless, I had the impression that I was enveloped in a pale, translucent beam of light.

I glanced at the ground, and realised something quite unusual….

….I was casting a shadow to the south.6

The shadow, although somewhat blurred about the edges, was well-defined; I observed it clearly on the ground

before me. I turned around several times, trying to observe the source of the light, but did not do so. I checked

my compass; I was facing almost due south. I observed shadows of objects around me, being cast to the

west/southwest from the rising sun.

But I…was not.

I was casting a shadow due south, from an unseen light source behind and above me.7

I recall my utter fascination with this phenomena; I had observed it on my previous visit. Now, it had returned,

stronger and clearer than ever. I continued walking forward, slowly; the light source moved with me and

around me. I observed my shadow moving on the ground before me; I still cast no shadow to the west.

As I progressed further into the reserve, the strange, silver-grey light faded from view; I felt strangely light-

headed, as though I was no longer in the woods of northern Michigan, but somewhere else, which appeared to

be the same place, although I could not identify it.8 9 10

I looked up at the ridge, and observed the Elder Brother; he made me feel especially welcome, and informed me

that I could come there, anytime, and that this was my home. I was very grateful for his kindnesses.

These photographs present views of the fallen tree, suspended just above the ridge path; it had definitely not

been there during my last visit, Thursday 18 September. Although not confirmed, it is reasonable to suggest

Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra), based upon the striated bark pattern. 11

I mounted the high dune path; I noticed again that the woods were extremely quiet, with no sounds of wildlife.12

Everything seemed hushed and breathless, as though it were waiting for something to happen.13

At the top of the dune, I observed a large tree suspended above the ridge path; it had most definitely not been in

situ on my previous visit and yet, somehow, I had the impression it had always been there.14 I inspected it

carefully; both the head and the roots were buried in deep, heavy foliage, and I could observe nothing further.

Nonetheless, I had the strong impression that it had been set upon the ridge path deliberately.15 16

I walked around to the (second) hidden trail, and looked about for any modifications to the branch assemblies I

had observed previously. While standing there, I heard the sound of footsteps, and of two men’s voices,

speaking softly; they did not appear to be far away.

“Who’s there?” someone asked.

“I don’t know,” someone answered.

BANG!

These photographs present views of the woods near the Large Shelter, where I heard the two men’s voices, and

from where the rifle was fired over my head. I can still recall, quite vividly, how loud the shot was, and how

terrified I became, that I might be shot as well. In truth, it was a very frightening experience.

A loud rifle shot sounded in the woods, directly over my head!

I froze in my steps, and did not dare move. I thanked God I was wearing my heavy, black jacket and not my

brown coat; I did not wish to be mistaken for a deer in the heavy brush.

I remained still for several minutes; I did not hear the men’s voices nor any sound of movement. In the

distance, I heard the sound of children’s voices, coming along the path, and felt somewhat less tense. The

atmosphere in the woods lightened, and I felt able to continue.

I investigated the Large Shelter, specifically the green apples I had set out last Thursday. One of the apples was

gone; the other two were lying on the ground. I also observed the adhesive label from the missing apple, peeled

neatly off and cast aside.17 I picked up the remnant apples, and looked at them carefully.

The remnant apples appeared to have been thrown forcefully upon the ground; it bore marks of splitting and

cracking, and I could not imagine how hard it must have been flung. The other apple appeared to have been

bitten, although I could not determine who, or what, might have done so. Curiously, both their labels remained.

I looked around the Large Shelter again; the woods were eerily quiet, and I began to realise it was not safe.18 I

did not know where the two men had gone…and I did not want to find out.

I returned down the high dune path, passing directly back to the main path and hurrying back to the carpark. As

I was coming up the hill, I observed a woman with several black Labradors; I had seen her before, and spoken

with her. Now, I warned her about the men on the high dune.

“Don’t go up there,” I said to her, “There are two men, with guns; they shot at me.”

“Oh, my god!” exclaimed the woman. “Thank you for telling me!” She hurried along the main path into the

reserve, and I began walking to the car.

17 The implications of this statement should be carefully considered. 18 I cannot think what might have happened, had I continued further into the woods.

These photographs present views of the remnant green apples at the Large Shelter; the first image is of the

apples as I first observed them…but not as I had left them on Thursday, 18 September. The second image

presents the adhesive label from the missing apple, carefully peeled off and abandoned on the ground. The

third image presents the cracked, split apple, appearing to have been flung forcefully; the fourth image presents

the possible bite or chew marks on the other apple.

In the carpark, I telephoned the ranger station, who informed me that I should call the Conservation Office. I

rang them several times, but no one answered.

BANG! BANG! Two more loud rifle shots sounded in the woods.

I returned to the car, and left immediately.

Respectfully submitted,

FIELD REPORT 09.22.2014

SUMMARY

Substantiation of this Report, and the behaviours described therein, may be provided, for the most part, by my

own experiences at Area D in 2011, 2012, 2013 and through 2014.19 20 21 22 23 24 25 I do not know of other

encounters and/or sightings in this area. Nonetheless, a cursory review of same suggests considerable activity.

The combination of physical, visual, audible and/or olfactory events described in this Report are as follows:

1. The possible modifications to the glyph assembly at the signpost;

2. Ditto the small branch assembly nearby;

3. The eerie quiet in the woods as I entered the reserve;

4. The unidentified tracks observed on the main path;

5. The strange phenomenon of my shadow, observed on the main path as being cast by an unseen light

source;

6. The strange disorientation experienced pertinent to the shadow phenomenon;

7. The large tree, suspended over the ridge path;

8. The curious reception of the green apples.

These factors, alone or in combination with past experience(s),26 may be considered sufficient to confirm the

presence of EC27 at Area D in the early autumn of 2014. I have since returned to this area numerous times,28

where I have experienced some startling observations and encounters. Further investigation may provide

additional information regarding possible habitation in this area, either permanent or itinerant.

The encounter with the two men on the high dune may be considered, quite frankly, a highly dangerous

situation, which might have had fatal consequences. I should have known better than to investigate a heavily

wooded reserve at the start of the season, whether hunting was legally permitted there or no.

A number of subjective events also occurred. While these cannot be considered conclusive, neither should they

be discounted. Although it is reasonable to review the impact of non-objective stimuli in this Report, such

effects, while personally quite vivid and at times overwhelming, are nonetheless nearly impossible to

substantiate with any measure of certainty.
