Congratulations and well done to everyone who took part in our school production of Grease. It was a huge success, with pupils (and staff!) putting their heart and soul into every performance. None of it could have happened without an incredible amount of effort from many people and our thanks go out to everyone involved, including our very enthusiastic audiences! On the 20th and 21st of June, St John’s RC Academy celebratedour junior and senior award ceremonies, hosted by DeputeHeadteacher, Mr Hugh McAninch. This year, we were honouredto welcome our guest and keynote speaker Jackie Brierton, who was awarded an MBE award by the Queen for ‘services toenterprise’. Jackie spoke to us about her life, education andoccupation. She attended St John’s Primary School in Perth andthen her paths lead her to Dundee, to Lawside Academy; afterthat she graduated from Edinburgh University in 1977. Shestarted off her working career by purchasing a small retailbusiness which through the years lead to her working as anEnterprise Manager for GrowBiz- an award-winning communitybased enterprise support organisation in rural Perthshire.

Our head teacher, Seán Hagney, delivered a speech highlightinghow proud he was of everyone receiving their awards. MrHagney also explained how happy he was of the work by lastyear’s Senior Leadership Team and how he is looking forwardto what next year’s team of pupils can achieve for our school.

Several pupils received special awards, they included:Katherine Gray who received the Iona Trophy; Dio Andre CPaderog who received the John B McLaren Award; the Perth andKinross Dux Medal was presented to Iona Lang; the Evansaward went to Katherine Gray and finally the Tom Kane awardwas presented to Michael Rimmer.

The evening had many highlights, such as solo performancesfrom Robert McCall and Robert Young, both s6 pupils. Therewere also performances by the school orchestra and for thefinale we were fortunate to experience a performance on thebagpipes by an outgoing pupil Chloe Donaldson and s2 pupil,Jack Liddell. Another highlight was the touching speeches ofthe outgoing Head Boy, Adam Chudzinski, and Head Girl, KatieHenderson. They spoke about their six year at our school andrecalled some memories that will stay deep in their hearts.

The uplifting evening left everyone feeling motivated, inspiredand successful. All of the pupils felt privileged to be part ofthe successful annual event celebrating achievements that weshould feel proud of. We would like to thank all of the staff, parents and pupils who made this a night to remember.

The YPI Scotland National Event takes place in June each year, andis an opportunity to celebrate all that has been achieved throughYPI that year, whilst showcasing best practice from across Scotland.

The event recognises the philanthropic success and engagement of tens of thousands ofsecondary students who have been responsible for directing hundreds of thousands ofpounds to local grassroots charities.

This year pupils from St John’s Academy attended in 2capacities: Kayleigh Ptak, Niamh McCall, Caitlin Murray andAlayah McLaughlin were this year’s school winners, theyrepresented Ship and Splash and attended along with theirgroup mentor Mrs McCabe.

Our Senior Leadership Team were invited to support therunning of the event along with Mrs Sandilands, school YPI co-ordinator. Their daystarted at 7.30 am dressing the venue with hundreds of balloons, bunting strips andsetting up the selfie stand. Once the event began our team registered and coordinatedguests, guided groups in the auditorium and worked alongside local photographers toensure the event was captured in full.

Jonathan Christie, YPI Scotland Manager has written to theschool expressing his thanks and outlined just how impressedhe was with our senior students. Jonathan noted that they are“an incredibly warm, confident, and able group of youngpeople.  The fact that they were willing to give up a whole dayto support the national event was commendable; however theirability to manage registration, coordinate guests, and front faceactivity, across the whole day, was remarkable.  They elevatedthe overall smooth running of the event to a different level.  Ihave no doubt that this is a reflection of school culture and thesort of young people you are developing at St John’s Academy.”

Safe Taysiders

On Monday Morning, I had no real expectations of what Safe Taysiders was all about - my teacher,Mrs Rees, had kept quiet about what to expect. She said it would be a day full of surprises andlots of learning experiences. I waited in anticipation! When we got to ‘The Queens Barracks’ on theDunkeld Road, we went in to a big hall and were greeted by one of the organiser’s. We were thenput into groups to attend and were directed to workshops throughout the day.

I learned so much! For instance, what a gas leak smells like, the danger that lies within aconstruction site, a farm and near a rail track. It has given me more of an insight into StrangerDanger and how to be safe using social media, as well as Fire prevention and safety and the impactof the misuse of alcohol and Drugs. The workshop I found most valuable was the CPR Workstation.I now know what to do to help save a life and it is easy to remember the song ‘Staying alive’,which I know will help me, help someone in need.

Overall, Safe Taysiders is an amazing experience. I am glad that so many schools in Perth andKinross get the opportunity to attend. It has certainly helped me learn how to be safe in lots ofsituations. My group worked really well in a team. We had great ideas and cooperated with eachother well.

Thank you St John’s for giving us the opportunity to know how to be safe. Inesa P7R
