SANCTION

‘My ways are not your ways,’ Thy ways of justice, of eternal sight, Inscrutable, with our predestined days,

We yield Thy ways their right.

But in that little span

Assumed to the divine.

Of three and thirty years our ways were Thine, Offered, accepted by the Son of Man,

The body’s daily round

But in our sin’s excess.

Of exaltation, need, and weariness, Thy Son like unto us in habit found,

Therefore our ways shall last, These tears, this laughter, this articulate Fight for survival, for a God has passed

Who kept our humble state.

EDWIN ESSEX, O.P.
