SANCTION: This event is sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association (AVA), a member of the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV). This event counts for acquisition of IVV achievement awards. Event number AT13/95318. SPONSOR: Virginia Vagabonds (AVA 365) DATE: September 14, 2013 START POINT: Fam Camp Building, Big Bethel Recreational Area, 123 Saunders Road, Hampton, VA. GPS Coordinates: N37° 5.3614', W076° 26.0437' LUNCH: Today, we will have a picnic after the walk. Bring a covered dish. DISTANCE: There is one 5-kilometer (3.1 mile) trail and one 10-kilometer (6.2 mile) trail. The 10-kilometer trail may be completed a second time for credit at no additional fee. ELIGIBILITY: Everyone! Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups are welcome. START AND FINISH TIMES: The walk will start between 9:00 AM and 12:00 AM. Finish by 3:00 PM. Lunch will be at noon (so plan your start time for the walk accordingly). WALK FEES: The Award is a 2" x 1-1/2" patch as pictured on the front. It is designed to go with the Civil War Battles header. Only 25 patches will be available and there will be no reorder. Pre-registration for award and credit is $5 and credit only fee is $3.00. Cost of the award at the event will be $5. If you present your AVA membership card, you will receive a 50 cent discount off your registration fees. There is no fee just to walk the trail. There will be no refund of any fees paid. The cost of the header patch will be $8. Profits from this event will be used to fund camp scholarships for under-privileged Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. PROCEDURES: At the start point, each participant will be issued their own start card, which must be signed and personally presented at the control points for stamping. The individual start cards will be turned in at the finish table after completing the event. CONDITIONS : Pets are permitted on this event; however, they must be on a 6-foot leash. Pets are NOT permitted in the Start Point. Water will be available at the start point and at the checkpoint. Restrooms will be available at start. Litter must be deposited in the designated containers. This event will be held regardless of most weather conditions. IVV CREDIT : All volksmarchers are reminded to bring their IVV books to this event. New walker kits and IVV event/distance books are available for purchase at the walk. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Trail rating 1A. The trail is along park roads, as well as sidewalks and shoulders of some roads in Hampton and Newport News neighborhoods. The trail is flat and is suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Bethel Park is the location of the Big Bethel Civil War Battlefield. Volksmarches are aimed at getting all people, regardless of age, out-of-doors to exercise non- competitively. Many senior citizens participate regularly. Many parents bring their children with them, carrying infants (or use strollers or wagons where the terrain allows). DIRECTIONS: FROM HAMPTON AND POINTS EAST: Take I-64 West to Exit 261A. Go West on Hampton Roads Center Parkway (the only way you can go) for less than one mile to Hwy 600(Big Bethel Road – first traffic signal). Turn right on Big Bethel Road for about 1.5 miles to Saunders Road. There is a traffic light there and a 7-Eleven on the left). Turn left on Saunders Road and go about 0.5 miles where the entrance to park is on the right hand side of the road at a sign "Big Bethel Recreational Area Fam Camp." There is a curve in the road just before you get to the entrance. Follow the road through the campground to Picnic Shelter 4 on the left. Park in the big grassy area on the left. Walk back down the road for 0.2 miles to the building on the right. FROM RICHMOND, NEWPORT NEWS, AND POINTS WEST: Take I-64E to Exit 258B (US 17N, J. Clyde Morris Boulevard). Follow J. Clyde Morris Boulevard Morris Boulevard for 1 mile (just past Food Lion). Turn right on Harpersville Road (changes to Saunders Road at the traffic signal). Follow Harpersville/Saunders Road for about 1.5 miles. Turn left into Bethel Recreation Park just past the yellow "Hidden Entrance Ahead" sign on the right.. Follow the road through the campground to Picnic Shelter 4 on the left. Park in the big grassy area on the left. Walk back down the road for 0.2 miles to the building on the right.
