Events regarding over-treatment of Mammoth Water on 6/19/2014: On Thursday, June 19, I noticed several em-ployees of the Mammoth Water Dept. up at the water tank near our home at 417 W. Sunset Dr., Mammoth. They just kept coming and going all day. One was David Garcia’s vehicle. I thought they were doing extra work to prepare for the new water system, which was said to be coming to our town within the next six months. That evening, I showered to get ready for the City Council meeting. The water seemed to be full of chlorine. I quickly finished and got out, but, the damage had already been done. My upper respiratory passageways felt burned and things had an odd smell. My throat hurt. My skin smelled of chlorine bleach. I called the MPD around 1700, knowing the Public Works Dept. would be closed. I talked to Erica, who was the dispatcher and explained my symptoms. I told him this is a non-emergency call, but, felt that someone had over-treated our water. I was worried that someone made a mistake. He told me he would talk to someone in the water dept. and call me back. He did call back and said they’d just treated the water and it should be OK, in time. He said they are draining water from the fire hydrants. The next day, I felt a little off, and sensitive areas on my body were irritated. We do not have the financial ability to be able to afford fancy reverse osmosis water treatment within our home, so, continued to drink the water. Pablo, from the Water Dept., came out Friday morning to test our water. He said that his tests showed our tap water’s chlorine levels were becoming normal and he’s going around testing the water from the residents who called to complain. We went out to eat at La Casita, where Janie

Mammoth Over-Treatment of Water Caused SicknessReynolds told me that she and her husband had adverse effects from the water, as well, including skin irritation and burning throat. Saturday, I felt really tired and took a nap. i woke up with a headache. Sunday, I felt even worse. I had a headache, felt weak, very nauseous, had diarrhea, and was very tired. I slept most of the day and didn’t go to church or any-where else. I stopped drinking the tap water and had Bud go to the

store to buy bottled drinking water. We are now looking into other ways to bring water into our home, even though we are paying a monthly water bill. It doesn’t make sense. My biggest question is why we weren’t warned before they excessively treated the water? I am recording this information in hopes that it will pre-vent harm to others, who are older and more infirm than I, by consuming or bathing in water here in Mammoth./s/ Deanna Louise Paine

At the July 2, 2014, meeting of the Pinal County Board of Supervisors, District 1 Supervisor Pete Rios called for an investigation into a “notice” that was turned over to him by one of his constituents. The notice, as Supervisor Rios called it, was allegedly from Bloom Dispensaries, a medical marijuana management company, and sent to some of its patients. Parts of the notice was read

out loud at the meeting by Supervisor Rios. According to Rios, the notice offered transportation to anyone willing to travel to Florence and testify at the Board hearing held on June 18 during which the Board of Supervisors approved the location for a medical marijuana dispensary in Oracle to be managed by Bloom Dispensaries. The notice also said, “As a token of our appreciation the first 25 patients to RSVP and attend the hearing will receive a free 1/8 ounce of medicine in the strain of your choice.” According to the Bloom Dispensaries website, a 1/8 ounce of medical marijuana is priced between $50 and $55 depending on type and potency. Supervisor Rios, who reported that he had served on the Judiciary Committee while in the state legislature, called the offering a bribe. “This is a quid pro quo,” Rios said. “Come and testify and we are going to give you some free marijuana.” Rios went on to say that “Oracle residents were concerned about Dr. Wilt. Supervisor Rios at the July 2, 2014 BOS Regular Session and is saddened by the mischaracterization of Bloom Dispensaries efforts to give voice to the medical marijuana cardholders of Pinal County. “Bloom gives away free and discounted medicine on an ongoing basis as part of its mission to provide affordable medicine to its patients. Bloom offers free medicine to patients who serve breakfast to those less fortunate at St. Vincent De Paul, to patients who clean city streets as part of the Phoenix adopt-a street program, and to patients who donate canned food during food drives and every Bloom patient receives a birthday gift of free medicine. In addition, everyday at Bloom every Veteran receives a discount – and a gift of medicine on Veteran’s Day. Our Senior Citizen patients receive discounts, and we offer free medicine in a number of marketing promotions. We record every medical marijuana transaction in the Arizona Department of Health Services database. “In an email to existing Bloom patients in Oracle, Arizona and Pinal County, Bloom offered a ride to the June 18 Pinal County Board of Supervisors hearing to those Medical Marijuana cardholders who don’t own a car, or otherwise couldn’t find a way to attend. For those patients in the Oracle area, having a safe and legal source for medical

marijuana is an important issue. There is a great tradition of groups including the Democratic Party offering free rides to individuals to participate in the public process dating back to the civil rights movement. Bloom is proud to empower those voices that otherwise might be silenced. “Bloom recognizes that many of our patients have transportation and health issues and that attending the hearing would be a sacrifice. We offered a modest amount (about 2% of a patient’s monthly allotment) of free medicine to those patients who attended the hearing regardless of how they might testify, either in favor or against the proposed dispensary. There is absolutely no law against this, and it is categorically not Bribery as has been alleged. Any claim that Bloom did anything illegal or improper is patently false and demonstrates reckless disregard for the truth and the law. “Offering free or discounted medicine is a point of pride for Bloom Dispensaries. We will offer the same programs to make medicine as affordable as possible to patients in the Oracle community. We thank those courageous citizens who showed up to express their opinions at the hearing, both in favor and in opposition, whether they drove themselves, or got a ride.” The July 2, 2014 meeting of the Pinal County Board of Supervisors may be viewed in its entirety at http://bit.ly/VLvvk3.

Pinal County - Sun Life Fam-ily Health Center’s oral health initiative got a boost this month when First Things First (FTF) approved a $330,000 grant so that they can con-tinue to serve kids 0-5 and expecting mothers in Pinal County. The three-year mobile dental program at Sun Life has grown to an extensive county-wide program that reaches over 2,000 kids a year. The

Mobile dental ‘Smile Van’ ready to roll another year; Sun Life receives $330,000 First Things First grant

Sun Life’s ‘Smile Van’

First Things First grant has a lot to do with that, Sun Life Mobile Dental Coordinator Diane Nystrom says. “Without this grant, our mobile dental program would have suffered,” Nystrom said. “We could have done a little bit without these funds, but not on the scale that First Things First has allowed us to do.” The grant will pay for the salaries of four staff members over the next year, which includes a full-time and part-time hygienist, a dental as-sistant/program coordinator, a driver for the organization’s mobile dental van, and part of Nystrom’s salary. The team provides screenings and fluo-ride varnish at county Head Start schools and community events, gives goody bags to the children screened that include coloring books related to dental health as well as den-tal hygiene materials such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss, and also provides oral health and nutrition education

to moms as well as children at preschools, kindergarten classes and daycares. Sun Life hopes, in the next few years, to be able to offer options such as dental exams and cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions, and referrals. First Things First started in Arizona in November 2006 after voters passed Proposi-tion 203, an initiative that cre-ated a voluntary system that funds quality early childhood development and health. “Through First Things First (FTF), Arizona has committed to ensuring that our youngest kids have the tools they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond,” the organization says on its website. The entire program is funded through a dedicated tax on tobacco products. With those funds, FTF improves and expands early education and health services for kids aged birth to 5 years. Decisions about services funded are made by 31 regional councils

composed of local volunteers, who represent “a diverse cross-section of the commu-nity.” “I just can’t say enough about what a wonderful program First Things First is,” Nystrom said. “It’s a huge program that helps so many people. And in the time I’ve worked with First Things First, I’ve met so many caring, dedicated people helping kids in the community in so many ways.” The goal of the organization is to “have a state where every child is ‘Ready for School.’” Great dental health is just one more aspect in a child’s readiness to learn. According to Nystrom at Sun Life, any dental problem could lead to pain and affect a child’s ability to pay attention in class, and

could also potentially mean time out of school. With this grant, though, the Sun Life mobile dental team is able to screen children for problems before they become one. This is especially impor-tant for children in remote rural areas in Pinal County,” Nystrom says, “who may not have regular dental exams. Sun Life’s mobile dental unit has also managed to greatly surpass its initial goal this year to serve 2200 children in Pinal County by 500 children. Nystrom says she expects the numbers to be similar this year. “I think that there is a lot more awareness. And the kids are happy to see us. We bring the van so that the kids have a good experience. The van re-

ally caters to kids, so their first dentist visit is a happy one. And I always say, it’s the hugs we get from the kids that make it all worth it.” says Nystrom. Visit www.azftf.gov/Pages/default.aspx to read about First Things First. To learn more about Sun Life’s mobile dental services or to find a schedule of locations and community events they will be offering their free services, visit www.sunlifefamilyhealth.org, call Diane Nystrom at (480) 560-7526, or email her at [email protected]. On July 4 the Oak Fire in the Galiuros reached the bottom of Rattlesnake Canyon just south of the Power’s Garden. Using burnout operations, firefighters were able to direct the fire around Power’s Garden. Precautions have also been taken to protect the historical Power’s cabin in the area. The Power’s cabin is where the Power family lived while working their gold mine in the Galiuro Mountains. In 1918, three lawmen were killed attempting to arrest the two Power brothers, Tom and John, for draft evasion. The father of the Power boys was also killed in the gunfight. It set off one of the largest manhunts in Arizona history and the event and trial have proven

controversial to this day. As of July 5, it has been reported that thanks to rain, cooler temperatures and the high humidity fire activity has been kept at a low level. The fire crews will continue to monitor the Power’s Garden area. There has been no significant movement in the northern section of the fire. In the southeast crews will continue to prep the area in anticipation of the fire’s arrival. On July 4, there were two lightning caused fires outside of the fire area which were quickly attacked. Crews remain available for other lightning caused fires as thunderstorms are forecasted for the areas. As of Monday, July 7, the fire has burned 13,920 acres and is now 25 percent contained.

Oracle - The Mountain Vista School’s National Junior Honor Society is, once again, planning its annual “Stuff the Bus” campaign. The response to past drives has been terrific and the wonderful school supplies and copy paper donations have been much appreciated by the Oracle School District students. School supplies, such as pencils, backpacks, glue sticks, notebook paper, highlighters, etc., are always a huge need in our small rural district. Due to high usage of technology by students, computer copy paper is also a significant need. Can’t make it to the store to buy computer paper or school supplies? No problem. Monetary donations are gladly accepted.

Oracle School District has annual ‘Stuff the Bus’ campaign Please come by and support their efforts. On Saturday, August 16, from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m., look for the small yellow Oracle School District bus at the Minit Market on SaddleBrooke Blvd., in SaddleBrooke. Or, on the same day, from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. find it at the SaddleBrooke Ranch. .Drop off sites are also available at the Oracle

Elementary School District Office, the Mountain Vista School Office. “We thank you, again, for all you do and your continued support of our students.” says a representative of the students and staff of Oracle Elementary School District # 2.

The Family Dollar Store located at 1040 W. American Ave. in Oracle will be closing their doors sometime in August. They currently are having a storewide sale that includes 10 percent to 30 percent off of selected items. The store has been open for 11 years and has four employees. In April, the company announced that it would be closing nearly 400 stores and

reducing the size of its workforce. According to Forbes, Family Dollar reported a six percent decline in second quarter revenue over the same period last year. Same store sales for the quarter fell 3.8 percent, which the store told Forbes is a result of decreased customer transactions. A sign in front of the Oracle store states that the closure is “this location only.” To read more about the Family Dollar closure, go online to http://onforb.es/1qOt0Kg.

Bustamante announces candidacy for Justice of the PeaceJuly 7, 2014 – Former lawmaker, Ernest Bustamante, a Democrat, has announced that he is running for Justice of the Peace in Pinal

County Justice Court, Precinct 4, which includes: Dudleyville, Mammoth, and San Manuel. Bustamante stated, “As

State Representative, my job was to make laws and set policy. I helped pass all-day kindergarten and worked to restore funding

for our rural communities. As a council member, I built roads, parks, and worked to increase public safety. As a union leader with the United Steelworkers, I fought for better wages for workers and pensions for seniors. I have a proven record of public service, funding our

schools, and fighting for justice. As Justice of the Peace, I will uphold the law with integrity and work to make our community safer and stronger.” Ernest Bustamante grew up in the copper mining community of Winkelman and graduated from Hayden High School. He attended Central Arizona College and is employed at Asarco, where he is a proud and active member of the United Steelworkers Union, Local 886, serving two terms as Vice President and current Recording Secretary. As State Representative, Bustamante served on the following committees: Environment, Natural Resources, and Public Institutions and Counties, where he was the Democratic ranking member. As a legislator, Bustamante was a strong advocate for education, workers, and public safety, consistently endorsed by teachers, organized labor, law enforcement, and firefighters. At the local level, Bustamante sat on the

Mammoth Town Council and currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Board. He also served as a Democratic Precinct Committeeperson for Pinal County. Ernest and his wife, Martha, have been married 37 years and currently reside in Mammoth. “It is an honor to be a public servant and with your vote on Tuesday, August 26th, I will uphold the values that make our community strong,” Bustamante added. Two baseball teams representing San Manuel/Mammoth Little League are competing in All-Star tournaments which began on June30, 2014. One team each in the 9/10 Division and the 11/12 Division are playing in the tournaments for a chance to advance to the 2014 Arizona Little League Baseball State Tournaments. The state tournaments will take place in Tempe and Peoria, respectively. The winning team of the state tournament advances to a regional tournament with a chance to play for a berth in the Little League World Series. The tournaments are being played at Maricopa and Casa Grande. All of the

tournaments are double-elimination. The 11/12 Division All-Stars started on June 30 with a loss to Casa Grande, 9 – 0. They took on Superior on July 2 looking to avoid elimination. Unfortunately, they were unable to advance in the tournament after a 6 – 4 loss. The 9/10 Division All-Stars started on July 1 with a loss to Casa Grande, 15 – 1. They bounced back in a big way with an 11 – 0 shut-out win over Coolidge on July 2. The 9/10 All-Stars were scheduled to take on Superior on July 7 in an elimination game. Game results were unavailable at press time. With a win over Superior, San Manuel/Mammoth would advance to play the loser between Maricopa and Casa Grande on July 8.
