Editor, San Manuel Miner: Mammoth poll workers are upset with a councilwoman. As poll workers, for the last Tues. election, we took great pride in our work. We go through training before every election, and many

times during that session we are recognized for the great service we provide to the Mammoth voters. So, we take great offense when a councilwoman calls the county with a complaint that we were turning people away

from voting. First of all, how much power does a councilwoman have? Secondly, she needs to get her facts straight before accusing us of such things. She had every opportunity to talk to us while she sat at the polling

Letter to the Editor: Poll workers doing their jobplace, observing, which she had no papers authorizing her to do. We believe that she crossed the line and needs to keep her hands (and nose) out of things that don’t pertain

to her. We answer to Pinal County offi cials in Florence. We hope that other council members will take notice and ask her not to be stirring up unnecessary problems. Although she knows who

we are talking about, we will protect the innocent by saying that it was not Gina Medina./s/Betty Esquivel, Inspector, and Mammoth Poll Workers Mammoth, AZ

By Pete Rios Imagine if a company wanted to start a project right here in Arizona that would help our economy by offering: • 250-300 high wage jobs • Millions of dollars in tax revenues to state and local jurisdictions • The sale of State Trust Land for this project would provide schools with an extra $60 million • $300 million in capital investment • The potential for thousands of additional local jobs in the areas

of cargo handling, manufacturing, warehousing and trucking due to the success of this project • Taking three semi trailers off the road for every rail car filed with goods. Now imagine the State of Arizona turning this opportunity away. The project is the Union Pacific Red Rock Project located along I-10 north of the Red Rock Community. This positive economic engine for Pinal County and surrounding counties currently languishes with the Arizona State Land

Railyard holdup hurts Pinal CountyDepartment and Governor Jan Brewer. The first question to come to mind is: why? The Union Pacific Red Rock Project is now stalled by the state for a variety of perceived issues. One of those is the Arizona State Land Department’s ambiguous goal of putting the land to the “highest and best use.” Placing an industrial transportation project on acres of barren land located next to a busy freeway and railroad tracks would seem a logical use of this state property. The land in question is already zoned for industrial and commercial purposes in the Pinal County Comprehensive Plan. In an effort to continually stall the project, State Land has asked for a myriad of extra reports and studies, although Union Pacific studies have shown this land to be a perfect location for such an operation. State Land is also relying on data supplied by an economic analyst report that was rife with fallacies,

misinformation and long shot suppositions by the author. The author of this misguided report failed to consult community and government leaders and local landowners in their effort to find relevant data. The Union Pacific Red Rock Project is in railroad terms: a classification yard. What this means is that trains coming into the area with its boxcars loaded with good and materials would be placed in the yard. The Union Pacific would then place these boxcars on a train that would take them to their ultimate destination. There is no off-loading of materials at this stop. Using this method at this location means less trucks are needed to haul these products and lower shipping costs to the consumer. This project is considered important for the long-term strategic planning for the future of the region. Pinal County would be the site of the largest classification yard in the southwest portion of the United States. We would

be a key player in the economic viability of rail service between Texas and California. Support for this project extends far past the boundaries of Pinal County. The state legislature gathered 83 percent of their members votes to support the classification yard. Many local city and town councils have passed resolutions supporting this project. The question remains: why are Governor Brewer, the Arizona State Land Department and the Arizona

Commerce Authority dragging their heels on a project that has the best interests of Pinal County and the State of Arizona at hand? We have a golden opportunity to create high paying jobs in a time when we need them the most. The land is right and the time is right. The highest and best use of this land is for the people of Pinal County and the State of Arizona. Pete Rios is a member of the Pinal County Board of Supervisors and a former legislator.

By Mila Besich-Lira Manuel Ramos the Chief Operating Officer of ASARCO LLC has announced that the company is offering a $50,000 cash reward to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and convictions of the person(s) who were involved with the theft of the copper anodes. To date the Arizona Department of Public Safety has recovered $2,000,000 worth of the copper that was stolen from the ASARCO Hayden Facility. The copper was tracked to a ranch in Tucson where it was then shipped to a scrap metal dealer in Upland California.

The scrap metal dealer was then sending it to Hong Kong via the ship. With the help of customs and border protection agents the ship was turned around and the copper has been returned to America. ASARCO commended the ongoing efforts of the DPS in a recently submitted press release. Investigators expect to indict at least 12 people involved in the theft. Those who have information on the theft are urged to contact 520-306-1188. Information can be given anonymously however the notice of the reward explains that ASARCO may not be able to maintain the anonymity of informant.

In last week’s Miner in the Mammoth Town

Clarification on Mammoth Lumber and the Mammoth CouncilCouncil work session story, it was noted, “The Public Works Department will be buying Redimix for sidewalks from a company in Tucson as they could get a better price than what was being offered by Mammoth Lumber.” This was paraphrased from what was actually said at the meeting. During the meeting, Public Works Director David Garcia asked the council for permission to purchase Portland Cement from CalPortland. Below is a transcript of his comments. “I want to build sidewalks. We started building sidewalks already on the Little League. We poured our first 75 feet. We used 17 bags of Portland for that pour and so I’m looking for a way to reduce our costs. “When I started, I was directed to purchase local and I have consistently. Whenever anyone in the town whether tires or automotive supplies or stuff.

“I buy the Portland right now – the guys, we make our own sand and rock. We don’t purchase that. We don’t purchase the water. What the cement costs us is our labor, our fuel as well as the price of the sack. “We’re paying $12.50 at Mammoth Lumber. Home Depot and Lowe’s have the price at $8.97 with a $79 delivery fee. Lowe’s also charges a pallet deposit. “But then CalPortland, we have to purchase 16 pallets – a full truck – to get them to bring it to us for free. They will deliver it to us for free. The delivery charge is free for $8.15 per sack. If we pay within 30 days, we get another 5 cents off. “I can get 16 pallets for a cost of $4,564 if I bought 16 pallets. At Mammoth Lumber, it would cost me $7,000.” Councilman Joe Brewer, at this point, asked, “Did you talk to the lumber yard to see if they could match that price?” Garcia replied, “No. I

haven’t. But I will first thing in the morning. I can ask them if they can meet that price.” Garcia also said, “I haven’t been offered a lesser price…I doubt seriously they can, but I will ask them.”

Vice-Mayor Frances Wickham added, “Plus we are also giving them all kinds of other business, not just the cement.” The full discussion can be viewed online at http://bit.ly/T0mwGR.Editor’s Note: It was not

our intent to single out Mammoth Lumber in this story. We just tried to report the meeting, paraphrasing for our readers. The Miner regrets any embarrassment the article may have caused to Mammoth Lumber.

Editor: The sky is falling, the sky is falling! The majority of the American people have reelected President Obama. Have they gotten through to the GOP? Or, does the

GOP believe their own propaganda, that this country’s problems are anyone’s and everyone’s fault except their members? If they don’t start to cooperate and move this

country forward, then the majority of Americans should organize to move them out of office. A house divided cannot stand./s/ David HankinsSan Manuel

FLORENCE, Ariz. – Non-attorney members are being sought to serve on the Pinal County Commission for Trial Court Appointments. There are several important changes coming to Pinal County in 2013. There will be a five-member Board of Supervisors, a variety of new office holders and now Superior Court judges will be chosen by the Governor and not through direct elections in the past. According to the Arizona Constitution, a county with a population of 250,000 or more in the latest census shall move to merit selection of Superior Court judges. In the 2010 census, Pinal County’s official population was 375,770. In September, the Board of Supervisors appointed seven residents from each of their respective districts (including the upcoming Districts 4 and 5) to sit as the Pinal County Commission of Trial Court Appointments Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee is currently seeking applications from non-attorneys to serve on the Pinal County Commission of Trial Court Appointments. In accordance with the Arizona Constitution, Article VI, Section 41, non-attorney members must have resided in the state for at least five years and must have resided in the supervisorial district from which appointed for at least one year before being nominated (supervisorial districts are available at http://goo.gl/VzdW2).

County seeking applications for Trial Court Appointment Commission

The nominating committee will select candidates to recommend to the Governor. Applications, along with the Committee’s recommendation for appointment, will be forwarded to the Governor who shall make appointments subject to confirmation by the Arizona Senate.

Interested non-attorneys are encouraged to send a letter and résumé to Stephanie Jordan, Deputy Court Administrator, ATTENTION: Trial Court Commission Nominating Committee, POB 1748; Florence, AZ 85132. By Chase KampCopper Area News The voters of Pinal County have spoken: the results of the 2012 general election showed a number of incumbents falling short to prevailing challengers, while a few party favorites stood fast. The unofficial tallies from the County elections office at press time indicated there would be some new faces in Florence. The newly expanded five-seat County Board of Supervisors was shaken up and tinted red. In District 1, Dem. Pete Rios managed to retain his seat by a healthy margin, defeating his two opponents Gem Cox (R) and Alicia Bristow (I) by grabbing nearly half the

vote. However, District 3 Dem. David Snider fell short against Rep. challenger Stephen Miller. The final tally showed Miller with 46.8 percent of the vote to Snider’s 41.5, a difference of about 800 votes. The rest of the Board is also going to the Republicans. Cheryl Chase won the District 2 seat against Dem. Margo Feldmiller, pulling down nearly two-thirds of the vote in the San Tan Valley area. Rep. Anthony Smith prevailed against Henry Wade in District 4, which consists of parts of Maricopa and a wide swath of southern Pinal County. Smith won 59 percent of the vote to

Voters speak at the polls and shake up Pinal County governmentWade’s 42 percent. Rep. Todd House defeated Maxine Brown (D) in District 5, which is made of Apache Junction, Gold Canyon and Queen Valley. House won 60 percent of the vote, winning by a margin of about 4,000 votes. After a particularly fiery campaign, Rep. Lando Voyles defeated incumbent Dem. James Walsh for the County Attorney seat with 53 percent of the vote. Incumbent and Voyles co-campaigner Sheriff Paul Babeu and was handily re-elected with more than 53 percent of the vote, while incumbent County Treasurer Dolores Doolittle (D) squeaked by challenger Steven Boyd (R) by about 1,200 votes. In the Congressional races, Ann Kirkpatrick (D) will be returning to Washington. She won her race for the CD-1 seat over Jonathan Paton (R) by three points. Rep. Paul Gosar easily won his race in CD-4, returning to Washington after representing the previous CD-1 district. In the state legislature, both Democrats and

Republicans saw victories. Dem. Barbara McGuire defeated Rep. Joe Ortiz in the LD-8 Senate race, while Rep. Al Melvin defeated Dem. Jo Holt for the LD-11 Senate. Duos of old and new Republicans reigned supreme in the state House races, however. In LD-11, incumbent Steve Smith (R) and newcomer Adam Kawasman (R) won their House seats. In a tight LD-8 race, incumbent Frank Pratt (R) won alongside T.J. Shope (R) by margins of about one thousand votes against Democrats Ernest

Bustamante and Emily Verdugo. The winners in the Oracle Elementary School Board race were Linda Thomas, Jeffrey McClure and Elizabeth Harmon. In the Ray Unified School District race, Nancy

Wilkinson defeated Nancy Magdaleno. In the Oracle Fire District race, the top five voter winners were Charlotte Poole, Ellie Brown, John Doran, Manuel Navarro and Bud Bristow.

By Jennifer R. Carnes Every year on Nov. 11, my aunt and thousands of others just like her take time to participate in little patriotic events sponsored by the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign War posts throughout the United States. To them, Veterans Day is more than an excuse to have a three-day weekend, it’s a chance to honor the men and women who served in the military and protected the very freedoms afforded by this country. My aunt sells little American flags as a fundraiser for her local American Legion. Like many Americans, men in my family have served in several branches of the military. My uncle Steve was in the Air Force, serving as an aviation mechanic at Edwards Air Force Base and at other bases in the world. My uncle Richard served in the Navy aboard the USS Carl Vincent. My

uncle Bernie was also in the Navy and served aboard the USS Saratoga at the tail end of the Vietnam War. My uncle Mike was in the Army during Vietnam. Their older brother Ralph was also in the Army and served in Korea and Vietnam. My cousin Jeff is still in the Army. He is stationed at Camp David and serves with the President’s communication advance team. Some of my other cousins have also served in the military, several of whom served tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. I’m very proud of my uncles and cousins. I’m also very proud of the men and women in the Copper Corridor who have served in the military or who are still serving in the military. We try to honor those men and women with our “Service Salute” or “Lest We Forget” columns whenever a family member or friend updates the newspaper on the military

person’s status. Veterans Day is always celebrated on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month because that is when hostilities officially ended in 1918, World War I, the war to end all wars. The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, but the end of the war was generally acknowledged seven months earlier when an armistice went into effect. In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as Armistice Day. “To us in America,” he said, “the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations.”

Originally, Armistice Day was meant to be celebrated with parades, public meetings, and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11 a.m. The day was declared an official legal holiday on June 4, 1926, when the U.S. Congress passed a concurrent resolution: “Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.” Congress passed an official Act on May 13, 1938 that required the day be dedicated to the cause of

By John Hernandez Dia De Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday honoring the dead on Nov.2. Celebration begins on Nov. 1 with Dia de Muertos Chiquitos (Day of the Little Dead). These celebrations/rituals coincide with the Catholic holidays of All Saints Day and All Souls Day. It is a joyous occasion that celebrates the

memory of departed loved ones and ancestors. It is not a time of mourning but a time to celebrate and refl ect on the continuity of life. It is believed that on these days the souls of the dead re-turn to visit the living. Dia de Muertos is celebrated in South American countries and in the United States where there are large Hispanic populations.

Dia De Muertos/Day of the Dead: honoring the deadTucson holds an annual event. The origin of Dia de Muertos dates back before the Spanish conquest of Mexico. The indig-enous people of Mexico includ-ing the cultures of the Toltecs, Maya, Mexicas, Aztec, Mixtec and Zapotec all participated in similar rituals and celebrations presided over by the goddess Mictecacihuatl (Lady of the Dead). It is believed the origin of the holiday may have been over 3,000 years ago beginning with the Olmec people. After the

Spanish conquest, there was a strong effort to convert the natives to Catholicism. The indigenous people were reluctant to accept the new religion resulting in a blending of old customs with the new religion. On Nov. 2, 2012, my wife and I were lucky enough to be in Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) Sonora Mexico and were able to join in on the local Dia de Muertos celebration. A large group of townspeople celebrated the holiday with

music, food and dance. There was also a contest to see which artist could build the best altar honoring those that have passed on. An altar of the dead is a key element of the Mexican tradi-tion of Day of the Dead. A plat-form is built and decorated in honor of a deceased relative or even a favorite person from his-tory, the arts, entertainers, etc. In Rocky Point, altars were built for Pancho Villa, Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, the Railroad Workers of Mexico and even

a Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. The platform is decorated with colored paper, fl owers with marigolds being traditional, sweets, favorite foods or drink of the deceased. Pan de Muerto (the bread of the dead) is sweet bread specifi cally made for Day of the Dead. The top of the bread is deco-rated to look like bones. Skulls and skeletal fi gures symbolical-ly represent the dead playfully mimicking the living. Personal

In last week’s Miner, the end of this story was inadvertently cut off. Here is the story in its entirety. Pinal County Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives have charged two men in the killing of an unknown man and two others with concealing

his body inside a toolbox and burying it in the area of the East Florence Kelvin Highway and Highway 177 near Kearny. According to PCSO, on Jan. 16, 2011, at 11:42 a.m. a hunter discovered the toolbox containing the

victim’s body. The hunter immediately contacted PCSO and homicide detectives began the investigation. The “Delta” toolbox was partially buried in the ground. Inside of the toolbox, detectives located the decomposing body of an adult male. The male was

Suspects charged in ‘toolbox murder’middle aged and the body had obvious signs of trauma. The body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Offi ce for an autopsy. The manner of death was ruled as a homicide by the Medical Examiner’s Offi ce. Last week, detectives charged Paul Goga, 33, Tempe, and Gilbert Evora, 30, Mesa, with fi rst degree murder. They also charged Javier Santos, 34, Apache Junction, and Joshua McGuire, 31, Kearny, with fi rst degree hindering and abandonment or concealment of a dead body. According to PCSO Public Information Offi cer Tim Gaffney, homicide detectives followed up on every lead which they received related to this case. The investigation,

he said, revealed the motive in the case was apparently related to a drug debt. Allegedly, Goga and Evora devised a plan to kill the victim. Detectives said Goga drove the victim to a residence in the 200 block of Hartford Street in Kearny where Evora was waiting inside with a baseball bat. Once inside, the victim was allegedly beaten with the bat by Evora and kicked by Goga until he died from his injuries. The victim was then wrapped in plastic and placed in the toolbox. Detectives said at this point Santos and McGuire agreed to take the toolbox which contained the body to the remote desert area near Kearny and bury it.

It is estimated the victim was murdered and buried sometime between March and November of 2009. Goga, Evora, Santos and McGuire are currently in custody. Homicide detectives are still working to try and determine the identity of the victim. “Homicide detectives never gave up on this case and were determined to fi nd out who committed this gruesome murder,” said Sheriff Paul Babeu. “Our detectives started with only physical evidence on this case and after continuously working it four people are in custody and will remain there for years to come.”

world peace. It was primarily set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II and the Korean Confl ict, the eighty-third Congress amended the Act of 1938, striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With its June 1, 1954 approval, the legislation ensured that Nov.11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. The Uniform Holiday Bill, signed June 28, 1968, moved Veterans Day to a Monday, observed fi rst with much confusion on Oct. 25, 1971. The move was designed to give federal employees a three-day weekend. Other holidays, Washington’s

Birthday, Memorial Day and Columbus Day, were also moved to Mondays (and continue to this day to be observed on that day). However, in 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97, returning the annual observance of Veterans Day to Nov. 11. Even though Veterans Day was offi cially celebrated on this past Sunday, please, take a moment to consider those men and women who have sacrifi ced and served for the common good. Moreover, if you know someone who is a veteran (or someone who is still serving) or if you happen to meet someone on the street, take a moment to say, “Thank you.” Editor’s note: More information on the history of Veterans Day can be found online at www.va.gov/opa/vetsday.

items related to the deceased and photos are added as well as religious items including crosses and rosaries, candles, sugar skulls, favorite music, tobacco, tequila and anything that could be identifi ed with the deceased. The traditional incense copal was also burned as an offering. There are many other traditions that go along with the holiday and symbolism that is involved in making the altars that are not mentioned here. We also joined a procession from the cultural center to the port docks, which were a few hundred yards away. The people walked in a large group, many of them carrying fl owers, torches and lighted candles. A small brass band and two women carrying a fl ower wreath led the procession to the waters edge. There people placed the wreath, fl oating candles and fl owers on the water as an of-fering to those fi shermen and sailors that had lost their lives at sea. The procession then returned to the center where everyone enjoyed the music, food, and danced into the night. An elderly man told my wife through a translator that he had been a fi sherman in Puerto Pe-nasco for 45 years. He had lost a brother at sea and knew oth-ers who had perished in storms and boat accidents in the ocean. He told her that because these men’s bodies were never found, family and friends had no graves to visit and decorate, so the offerings were made to the Sea of Cortez where their bodies lie.
