LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS! Preparation for the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition by Jerry Back

"The notes I handle no better than many pianists. But the pauses between the notes—ah, that is where the art re-sides." - Artur Schnabel, classical pianist/composer, in the Chicago Daily News, June 11, 1958.

Whether we're musicians, or not, I think we can all un-derstand that silence and pause in itself can be equally as powerful as words and movement. This week we exam-ine the Collect--the last part of the Introductory Rites and our opportunity to focus ourselves before transitioning into the divinely-inspired Liturgy of the Word. Question: What is the purpose of the Collect? Answer from the Archdiocese of San Francisco:

The next time the priest says “Let us pray” near the end of the Introductory Rites, just take a moment to breathe and pay attention to your heartbeat. In that moment of paying attention, we enter more deeply into worship. We can bring wandering minds back to the present and actu-ally “collect” the many events and relationships of our lives into our prayer offering at Mass.

How well do we collect ourselves in prayer as a Church at this moment? Does the Church real-ly...enter...into...prayer? This is a time for the priest to lead the assembly in silent prayer as well as in the chant-ed or spoken prayer that follows. This is the time for the people—all ministers included!—to put aside all distrac-tions and be present to God, just as God is present to us.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPOTLIGHT on the *GIRM

“ … the priest invites the people to pray. All, together with the priest, observe a brief silence so that they may be conscious of the fact that they are in God's presence and may formulate their petitions mentally.”

*General Instruction of the Roman Missal, n. 54.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------Schnabel recognized that his art resided in the pauses between the notes he played on his piano. The Collect is our chance to center ourselves in unity with God because we are made to recognize that God is present in that si-lence and will be in every pause, word, action and prayer that follows in our Holy Mass. How (pause) gloriously profound!

FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Twelve of our Religious Education chil-dren will receive their first communion this weekend at the 9:30 am Sunday mass. We congratulate them and their parents! A week ago they received their second confession or Sacrament of rec-

onciliation, and also received the final instructions be-fore receiving communion. Reminds me of a book I read sometime ago which was one of the bestsellers of 2007, “The Last Lecture.” It is written by Dr. Randy Pausch, a Harvard professor who was in his forties, who died of pancre-atic cancer in 2008. In a letter to his wife Jai, and his children Dyl-an, Logan and Chloe, he wrote this beautiful "Guide to a Better Life" for them to follow. I just want to mention few of his insights on how to improve our life. May you be blessed by his insight. POINTS ON HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE Personality: 1. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about. 2. Don't have negative thoughts of things you cannot control. Instead, invest your energy in the positive present moment. 3. Don't overdo; keep your limits. 4. Don't take yourself so seriously; no one else does. 5. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip. 6. Dream more while you are awake. 7. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need. 8. Forget issues of the past. Don't remind your partner of his/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness. 9. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't hate others. 10. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present. 11. No one is in charge of your happiness except you. 12. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away, like algebra class, but the les-sons you learn will last a lifetime. 13. Smile and laugh more. 14. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree. To be continued next issue……stay tuned to this station! A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station…
