OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMS

Civic Design Review The Civic Design Review Committee of architects anddesigners conducts a three-phase review of new andrenovated civic construction projects to ensure design qualityof City structures.

Community Arts & EducationArts Education The Arts Education Program works in collaboration with

local funders to support grantmaking, artists-in-residenceand professional development for SFUSD educators. TheSFUSD Arts Education Master Plan was also spearheadedby this program.

Cultural Centers The Arts Commission allocates funds annually forprograms and operations of four City-owned communitycultural centers – the African American Arts and CultureComplex; Bayview Opera House; Mission Cultural Centerfor Latino Arts; and South of Market Cultural Center(SoMarts also acts as fiscal agent for the Queer CulturalCenter, Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center and theNative American Cultural Center).

Neighborhood Festivals Grants The Neighborhood Festival grant supports neighborhoodfestivals where art and culture are the main components forstrengthening neighborhood ties.

Programs in the Community Grants The grant for Programs in the Community supportsnonprofit, non-arts organizations that use the arts to betterserve their constituents. The program must have a publiccomponent.

WritersCorps WritersCorps works to transform and strengthenindividuals and communities through the written andspoken word. The program serves youth-in-need: aged 6-21, primarily low-income, incarcerated, immigrant,homeless, or educationally disadvantaged.

Cultural Equity Grants Cultural Equity Grants provides support for the enrichmentof San Francisco’s diverse cultural landscape. Fourprograms (Cultural Equity Level 1 & Level 2; IndividualArtists Grants; Creative Space; Organizational ProjectGrants) offer project-oriented grants to arts organizationsand individual artists to nurture the continuing growth of avibrant arts scene that celebrates the City’s vast ethnicdiversity and variety of cultural traditions.

Gallery The Arts Commission Gallery showcases the work of BayArea artists at several locations: the Veterans Building, 401Van Ness Ave; the ground floor of City Hall, and windowinstallations at 155 Grove Street.

Public Art ProgramArt Enrichment / Percent for Art Courthouses, libraries, City offices, the airport and other

civic structures are enlivened through this program, whichintegrates works by artists in the construction of Citybuildings and parks, as well as in broader urban designcontexts, such as traffic and pedestrian malls and transitcorridors.

Art on Market Street Program Pedestrians are engaged year-round with artworks inspired bythe history, ecology and cultures of Market Street, created byBay Area artists. The program consists annually of four three-month poster series and two to three temporary projects in avariety of media, all taking place on or near Market Street.

Civic Collections The Civic Art Collection program is responsible forcataloguing and conserving the more than 3,000 pieces ofart belonging to the City outside its museums

Monuments The Arts Commission is charged to serve as stewards of allthe City’s historic monuments—located in everyneighborhood of San Francisco—ensuring their safety,upkeep, restoration and renovation.

Temporary Installations Like the permanent arts installations overseen by the PublicArt Program, temporary art commissions are also managedby the Arts Commission. The duration of these public visualartworks vary, but typically lasts six months.

Street Artists Licensing San Francisco’s street artists provide residents and visitorswith a colorful outdoor marketplace that contributes to theeconomic life of the city.

Summer in the City The Summer in the City “pops” concert series providesmusic lovers with diverse and affordable performances byour renowned San Francisco Symphony orchestra and asparkling roster of guest artists in Davies Symphony Hall.The free San Francisco Symphony performance in DoloresPark each summer is also under the auspices of thisprogram.

Summer in the City

The Summer in the City “pops” concert series provides music lovers with diverse and affordableperformances by our renowned San Francisco Symphony orchestra and a sparkling roster ofguest artists in Davies Symphony Hall. The free San Francisco Symphony performance inDolores Park each summer is also under the auspices of this program.

Events at Davies Symphony HallDuring the month of July, fourteen performances were presented at Davies Symphony Hall aspart of the Summer in the City concert series. From Beethoven to Tchaikovsky, from Bernsteinand Copeland to Prokofiev, the series has something for everyone, including Sweet Honey in theRock. Thousands attended these performances.

Location / Artist / Project Name CommissionOcean View Branch Library345 Randall St.Ocean View Library has more art per square footthan any other public building in the City. Thefront door is flanked by the much loved bas-reliefmurals created by Collette Crutcher and MarkRoller. On one side, a young tree representsOcean View today, on the other, a mature tree,heavy with fruit in the form of letters andsymbols, represents Ocean View’s future.

Inside the building, the stairs, stairwell and upperhallway of the library were transformed by artistJohn Wehrle into an environment of flying words,letters and images based on quotes from literatureand children's books. The artwork encompassesthe ceiling, walls and floors of the space, as if theviewer were on a fantastic journey through theinside of a book.

Projects Currently UnderwayThe San Francisco Arts Commission continues toadd to the City’s renowned art collection at SFO.Three more Bay Area artists were recentlycommissioned to create artworks for the 2-storygate room walls in the International Terminal,and SFAC has purchased a ceramic work for thesculpture court in Boarding Area C in Terminal1. These artworks are being acquired with artenrichment funds generated by the Airport’sMaster Plan Projects. More than $10 million wasspent on the artwork at SFO.
