Comment As some of the advances came out this week, early analysis would confirm an exceptionally

healthy picture for Top 40 outlets. Certainly there's a lot more to a winning station than just music, but the current availability of excellent pop product is an added plus. It's also interesting to track the playlists of some successful stations and note how well they program for their market. Being able to spot those certain records that aren't, quote "national" hits, and playing them in the place of less locally important items is common among many of the winners. If you love statistics, check this one out. The Police "Every Breath.." became the most added record in Gavin Report history on May 27th, with 167 adds and 171 total reports. Those exact figures were repeated this week by the McCartney/Jackson single. In addition, that same week, May 27th, was the first time two records picked up more than 100 adds. That also happened again, as John Cougar Mellencamp pulls in 110 new stations. Even with those two blockbusters, ten new entries join Correspondents' Consensus Picks. Huey Lewis & The News showing the same kind of initial reaction as their first big hit "Do You Believe In Love". Good growth in airplay for Jackson Browne, Benatar, Eurythmics and Sembello.

"Just A Job To Do"/"Home By The Sea"/"Illegal Alien"/"That's"-GENESIS (Atlantic) Like true working men, Genesis' productivity increases. As long as the consistency persists, Genesis will continue to reap the rewards that huge airplay brings. All four recommended trax blow smoke rings around their current single "Mama." Top Ten in two weeks is my bet. .S. Forces"/"Power And The Passion"/"Read About IV -MIDNIGHT OIL (Columbia) Fair warning...Midnight Oil is not another "hot -at-home" Australian band playing raunch and roll or blue collar dance rock. Significantly produced in London by Nick Launay (PIL, Kate Bush, Birthday Party) 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 is an alchemical mix of brash politics, hard rock, ballad, and ingenious engineering. The more you know about MO, the more you're prepared for the unique liberties they've taken by bucking the established powers -that -be inside the music business. So far it's been on their terms or not at all. The three trax above are only a starting point. Read up on these guys, please. Ask for the press sheet.

"68 Guns"/"Thoughts of A Young Man" -THE ALARM (I.R.S.-import) Lookout! Here's a

brand new import single from a future force in rock 'n' roll. The Alarm, since opening for U2 and headlining on the club circuit, have built up an enviable audience base amongst the hard -to -please. Rather than colliding the hard to please. Rather than colliding with their current U.S. release, this import single exemplifies their strong potential. A little dramatic but still worth sounding the Alarm about.

"Keep On Moving"/"Please Don't Make Me Cry"/"Red Red Wine"-UB40 (A&M) The only U.K. act strong enough to knock Paul Young out of the number one slot first week out is UB40. Not since The Police has reggae been so attractively incorporated into a believable rock mold. Though strictly a reggae band (make no mistake), fundamentals of expert recording keeps UB40 from the constraints of traditional reggae dryness. Void of political and religious meandering, UB40 takes elements of dub and bluebeat and makes a clean sounding LP utilizing instruments and arrangements not usually indigenous to reggae.

'Break These Chains"/"Over The Line"/"Hey Little Girl" -ICEHOUSE (Chrysalis) A five song update, including "Hey Little Girl" off the last LP. This combination new single and re- release EP only reminds us how incredibly overlooked Icehouse has been in this country. Part of the fault has been Iva Davies' leanings toward solitary ecclectism. Thus, this EP

emphasizes Icehouse's harder side. No dancing allowed. "Break These Chains" and "Over The Line" are previously unreleased.

"You" -THE RADS (EMI) A little catch-up ball on this one. The Rads come from Australia and their first U.S. release is a four song EP of heady hard rock. I never knew Fess Parker could play guitar so well underneath that coon -skin cap. Wild cover.

I've been asked how I feel about the use of the client's voice on a commercial. As with any production technique, it can make the station boring and reduce the effectiveness of the spots, if it's overused. Otherwise, it has several things going for it.

One of the most important things it has going for it is that most clients like to hear them- selves on the radio...particularly when they sound "professional." (Not necessarily like a professional announcer, but like they are properly part of a professionally -produced commercial.) Thoughtful editing and equalization is necessary. Of course, the spot must be written and produced to get a selling message across, or the strategy can backfire....if the spot doesn't work, the client is not going to consider himself to blame, so the fault must be that of the station! Well done, though, it can get and keep your business.

The process should not be encouraged unless you feel that the client would make a good spokesperson, and then suggest the spot be built up from an interview. Spots in which the advertiser actually acts as his or her own announcer usually don't work too well because of the ego and unprofessionalism of the client; it doesn't sound sincere.

The best spots incorporating the client's voice are generally those in which the client has a genuine enthusiasm for what they do....and this communicates in their voice. It can work for any kind of business, though services in which the "intangibles" make the difference (such as restaurants) benefit the most. Sift through the tape for the key points, edit to highlight them (and delete the "uh"s and parathetical comments), and try to highlight just one point per spot. In addition to equalization, you may have to add compression to the tape because of the tendency of nonprofessionals to swallow their words and have considerable volume differences in their speech. (This is especially necessary if you are adding music, since the music is already compressed, and the clarity of the speech will suffer considerably as parts of syllables will vanish into the music.)

When doing the original interview, do it in a comfortable setting for them, make sure all background music is turned off, and try to tape in a relatively quiet location. Mike the client closely, and if necessary keep taking them over the same ground until they forget there's a tape rolling and start getting enthusiastic about the subject. You may have to lead them by getting visibly excited yourself. They must sound spontaneous and enthusiastic or the spot will be deadly. It's always advisable to have spoken with them about their business before making any suggestion that they talk about their business on a spot, so you can gauge if they will make a good subject or not.

Master and save any spots the client likes. They may like them enough to want to reuse them at a later date, and you can never do the same spot twice!

which went on to get lost in the shuffle. It's been re-released and shouldn't be overlooked. Here's what was said the first time around... "For those searching out an unusual record... this is it! Juluka (pronounced JUH-LOO-KAH), is actually a racially mixed group from South Africa, whose music might be described as tribal /pop. Lyrics are a bit hard to decipher (nothing unusual about that) with a chant -like chorus that's a super hook. I

SOULS -Rick Springfield (RCA) A remarkable track record the last few years testifies to his talent as singer/songwriter. Here's another hook that, like earlier hits, is sure to catch the widest spectrum of top forties audience.
