11.5 INSTRUCTIONS

Special attention is required with the interconnection of the topping-up generator and the fluegas system regarding the inertgas delivery lines. It should be recognised that during operation of one system only one closed valve is between inertgas side and the unit not in operation. A double block-and-bleeder system for both I.G.S. and I.G.G. delivery valves could be taken into consideration. Our delivery is strictly one pneumatically operated delivery valve with fail-safe function, which is normally closed. The delivery valves of both I.G.S. and I.G.G. systems must be interlocked. Limit switches on I.G.G. inertgas delivery valve will be provided.

ENGINEERING BASIS

Design basis

The lay-out of the equipment has been calculated and based upon following criteria: price based on manufacturer's standard Shipboard use, indoor erection Fully automatic starting by switch. The process is safeguarded by protection devices. Seawater for cooling, maximum inlet temperature 32°C Cooling water temperature increases about 10°C Continuous running in cold as well as tropic climate Ambient air temperature varying between 0 and 50°C Capacity is calculated on ambient air of 25°C and 100% RH Burner cone a part subjected to normal wear and tear Electric motors are switched directly on line Interface according to DIN with counter flanges, butterfly valves suitable for mounting between JIS flanges. Installation suitable for non hazardous area. Mentioned pressures are effective working pressures. Control voltage 220V. Combustion chamber must be rinsed by fresh water for 5 minutes. Pressure indicator scales will be in ~ ~ l c m ' . Pressure gauges and pressure switches will be provided with 3-way cocks or independent test flange for calibration test.

Design of arrangement - The arrangement design is such that the total unit requires minimum possible space. - The blower, fuel-oil pump and generator are completely assembled and can be

mounted directly on a flat, horizontal floor. - The arrangement shall be such that the operator shall have a good survey on the

generator and control box. - Reading the instruments in the installation is easy as they will be arranged on a

clearly visible place.

Classification

The system will be classified according ABS rules.

Painting - Stainless steel parts will be cleaned from impurities. - Indoor, steel parts will be shotblasted (SA 2%) and painted with one layer of primer. - Finish painting for all components is 7.5 BG 712 (incl panels)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

VVORKING PRINCIPLE

lnertgas is produced by combustion of oil with air. The fuel oil is a hydrocarbon and the air is a mixture of mainly 79% of nitrogen and 21 % of oxygen. The combustion is a chemical reaction between the hydrocarbon and the oxygen, mainly giving carbon dioxide and water. Somme little rest quantities of carbon monoxide and hydrogen also remain. The nitrogen of the air leaves the generator unchanged. The water is condensated for the greater part. So, the inertgas produced mainly consists of nitrogen and C02. The hot combustion gases are cooled, first indirectly in the combustion chamber by a seawater jacket. The principle cooling however, occurs afterwards in the cooling section where, at the same time, the sulphur oxides are washed out. Sulphur is mostly present in the fuel and is oxidised during combustion. The inertgas is saturated with water at the outlet temperature. At the end of the cooling section the water droplets are separated from the gas stream.

BURNER

A good combustion process is the first requirement for a reliable inertgas generator. The burner is of our special design, according to the Smit Ultramizing System. In this design the fuel oil is atomised in two steps. First the oil, supplied under pressure to the burner, is sprayed out of a conventional nozzle. Then the oil is subjected to a tangential impulse flow of combustion air, which added to the mainly axially orientated impulse flow of the liquid itself, results in an ultra-fine dispersion of the liquid. The tangential impulse flow of combustion air is created by supplying the air through slots in an atomising ring, which is fitted at the end of the burner gun. This combustion process guarantees that there will not be any soot, not even at understoichiometric conditions, during combustion-air shortage, caused by a lower speed of the combustion blower, which could occur during voltage and/or frequency fluctuations of the electrical supply. Soot cannot be tolerated in the plant, neither in the ship's cargo tanks nor piping system. To prevent soot formation, especially in the long run, a stable and well-balanced combustion process is obligatory.

COMBUSTION CHAMBER

The combustion chamber is water-cooled by a jacket. The main feature is the complete absence of any internal bricklining. The heat of the lining is not required to complete the combustion. The advantage is that the inertgas of the correct composition can be delivered within 4 minutes (no lining needs to be heated up). Renewal or repair of such a lining after some time of operation is also avoided. Scaling in the cooling-water jacket of the combustion chamber is prevented both by the low temperature rise and the positioning of the openings for the supply and discharge of the seawater.

111.4 COOLING AND WASHING SECTION

The inert gas coming from the burner has a rather high temperature and contains sulphur oxides. The gas has to be cooled and scrubbed. In the cooling/washing section the construction ensures an intense contact between gas and water. The water droplets are separated, before leaving the generator.

111.5 EFFLUENT WATERSEAL

The required final pressure of the generator is achieved by a Roots-type airblower, installed in front of the combustion chamber. This causes an overpressure in the combustion chamber and gas-cooling section. A seal pipe with level adjusting valve (yard's supply) under the cooling section discharges the water, at the same time maintaining the required pressure and avoiding the escape of inertgas.

ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

The complete electrical installation required for: - Starting - Operation - Safeguarding is built-in in an electrical control box.

111.6.1 Eelectrical control box

The control box contains the main switch, the fuses and the starters for the blower motor and the oil-pump motor, and all other components such as transformer, timeclock, relays etc., required for proper operation, etc. Entrance of your main supply cable can be made on a suitable place in the control box.

111.6.2 Signalization and meters

On the front door of the control box all failure lamps are inserted. In case of a failure the procedure is as follows: A blinking lamp and an audible signal will signalise the direct cause of the failure. At emergency alarm, the plant will shut down immediately. The lamp can be fixed and the horn be stopped by pushing the button "acknowledge". After elimination of the failure the generator can be reset, the relevant failure lamp extinguishes and the generator can be started again.

MEASUREMENT OF THE OXYGEN CONTENT IN THE GAS (Optional)

A continuous check of the oxygen is required by most of the classification societies. The analyser constantly indicates the oxygen content in the inertgas and has the following function:

To effect an alarm when a pre-adjusted maximum or minimum amount of oxygen in the inertgas produced is exceeded.

The highest value is laid down by the application of the inertgas. The lowest value protects against under-stoichiometric combustion (too high content of combustible CO -1- H2).

The generator will not stop at alarm condition. It will keep on running and the gas produced is purged. This enables the operator to change the adjustment of the equipment and to see the result.

If the oxygen analyser of the flue-gas installation will be used for this generator as well, potential free limit contact must be provided.

OPERATION

The plant is designed for local or remote start. Starting and stopping occur by a switch, to be operated by hand. The starting-up cycle runs as follows:

1. Cooling water is supplied from a separately installed and operated pump.

2 The purge line is opened and the delivery valve is closed and the blower purges the generator and purge-channel with air.

3. The pilot burner is ignited by a spark plug and the flame is detected.

4. The pilot burner ignites the main burner and this flame is detected as well.

5. The flame of the pilot burner extinguishes.

6. The oxygen content is checked by the oxygen analyser (if installed and if at that moment the 02-content is correct, the gas can be admitted into the delivery line.

The cargo control-room panel is NO Smit Gas Systems' delivery.

MAINTENANCE

The selective choice of materials and the application of high-quality components have minimised chances of failure. Components requiring maintenance as well as vital parts are always situated at a readily accessible place. In the instruction manual you will find a clear description of the maintenance procedures.

TESTING

The following test will be done before delivery: - The completely wired electric box. - All ahrms and safety devices (partly by simulation). - The ignition sequence. - The special electric test:

I. High-voltage test, 2 KV-AC for 1 minute between phases and earth, or primary and secondary circuits.

2. Insulation resistance test with 1000 V DC on same.
