Student Responsibilities • Participants in the student conduct process

have the following responsibilities: • To know and adhere to the Student Code of

Conduct • To be honest and complete in all information

they provide in the process. • To attend all meetings or hearings in a timely

manner. • To complete any imposed sanctions on time. • To participate in a manner that is civil and

respectful.

Code of Conduct Overview

• A students fundamental right is the right to learn, and the College has a responsibility to provide protections, opportunities and environments that promote learning. The student, in turn, has responsibilities to other members of the College/University community to refrain from interfering with the rights of others to learn, teach, and work.

Disruptive Behavior

• Disruptive Behavior: Intentionally or recklessly interfering with normal college/university sponsored activities, including, but not limited to: studying, teaching, research, college administration, designated areas of activities, fire, security, or emergency services; or inciting others to commit disruptive behavior; and any unauthorized occupancy of school facilities or access to or from such facilities.

Harassment • Harassment: Intimidation or harassment of another

student or staff member of the college, including but not limited to, sexual/racial harassment or threats, and may include verbal and/or physical actions. Intentionally making repeated telephone calls to or from the college with intent to annoy, threaten or harass another person. This includes stalking — following or appearing within the sight of another, approaching or confronting another.

• Individual in a public or private place, appearing at the work place or residence of another, entering or remaining on an individual’s property, contacting by telephone, or sending mail or electronic mail.

Student Rights

• Procedural and substantive due process • Notice of charges • Pre-hearing meeting where all rights and

procedures are explained • Choice of hearing type: administrative or Campus

Conduct Board • Opportunity to present testimony, evidence, and

advisor, licensed attorney, or non-attorney advocate

So why does all this matter?

• Helps students of the highest ethical character, who make informed decisions;

• Contributes toward increased civility on campus, so students can learn in an conducive environment;

• Keeps students safe from harm; • Aids in retention and graduation rates, a key

indicator for measuring a school’s (and a diploma’s) value;

• Teaches students critical thinking, communication and accountability skills

College/University Advisors & Non-University Advisors

• Role of an advisor is to: • Advise the respondent concerning the preparation

and presentation of his/her case. • Accompany the respondent to all conduct

proceedings as requested by the respondent. • Have access to all materials relating to the case

as provided by the respondent. • A respondent who elects not to appear at a

hearing may not be represented by a university advisor/non-university advisor at the hearing.
