In summer 2009, I was granted an opportunity to work for

Purapharm International H!"!# $td in a summer internship

programme! In the past two months, I worked in the Produ%tion and

$ogisti%s department as a produ%tion assistant! The e&perien%e thatI o'tained from the internship period was far 'eyond from what I

e&pe%ted!

Purapharm International H!"!# $td is a (hinese medi%ine marketing

%ompany with its emphasis on manufa%turing traditional (hinese

medi%ines into %on)enient granule forms! It was e&pe%ted that I

%ould get the %han%e to e&pend my limited knowledge towards

(hinese medi%ines, whi%h I e)entually did, 'ut what surprised memost was that I %ould e)en take a %lose glan%e at the produ%tion

lines and understand how the entire manufa%turing pro%ess

operates in the %ompany!

*uring the first few weeks of my internship, I was taught and

introdu%ed mainly in the logisti%s part of the %ompany+s produ%ts

in%luding registrations of hundreds of different (hinese medi%inal

produ%ts! Tests su%h as the S!!S! test ha)e to 'e run followed 'y

piles of do%umentary work 'efore the re-uired do%uments are ready

to 'e su'mitted to the *epartment of Health for their appro)al! It

was interesting first of all to learn the terminologies and some

pra%ti%al softwares e!g! the ./S system in the logisti%s area, I also

learnt a'out the standardiation of produ%ts pa%kaging! The

dimensions, shapes and pantone of ea%h produ%t pa%kage ha)e to

'e unanimous and a%%urate to ensure well %ontrolled produ%t

-ualities! *uring the se%ond half it %ame to one of the 'iggest

e&%itements in the internship programme, whi%h was that I was

gi)en the %han%e to 'e in 1anning, where the %ompany+s produ%tion

lines were rooted, to take a %loser look at the manufa%turing pro%ess

of (hinese medi%ines and as well their esear%h and

*e)elopment3*# department! *uring the two weeks of my

staying in 1anning, I mainly took part in the 3* department and

helped my %olleagues with one of the pro4e%ts whi%h was to

determine the amount of pesti%ide residues in (hinese her's like

inseng using as (hromatography! I was also gi)en theopportunity to a%-uire some pra%ti%al skills from the la'oratory work

e!g! sample pretreatments, whi%h are e&tremely important 'efore

samples are ready for further )erifi%ations!

It wasn+t only te%hni%al knowledge and skills that I+)e learnt from

this internship programme, it was also %ommuni%ation and so%ial

skills that I+)e a%-uired in the last two months! 5ork was mu%h moreeffi%ient 'eing a'le to effe%ti)ely and smoothly %ommuni%ate with

%olleagues espe%ially in 1anning where /andarin was re-uired!

There were more things that I a%tually gained apart from 'ooks,

what I was told 'y one of my senior %olleagues has now 'e%ome my

motto, whi%h is to ask e)erything that you don+t know and learn

from e)ery new thing! 6n%e again I would like to thank the

department for offering su%h internship opportunities and I 'elie)e

that the e&perien%e has geared up myself and helped with my future

%areer path!
