The Polymer Sector comprises four discrete processing areas: Plastics Processing,

Rubber Processing, Polymer Composite Processing and Sign Making. Just fewer than 14,000

companies operate within the sector employing some 286,000 employees. This figure rises to

approximately 400,000 employees when companies who process polymers as a secondary

operation to their main business, are taken into consideration. The industry is extremely

dynamic being subject to many changes and opportunities arising from technological change,

development of new materials and processing technology and not least, the development of

new products and changes in consumer requirements.

The industries require innovators, technologists, designers and highly skilled

processing technicians to remain at the forefront of developments and changes in the worlds

demand for more versatile, lightweight, low cost and energy saving products and

applications.

Products and component parts developed using polymers, are used in many applications and

operations are some of the two processes where you can apply production management

theory.

A production system is the design process by which input elements are transformed

into useful products. In livia polymer bottles industries finished product like, liquor,

confectionery, food relishe, home and schools, chemical & pharma.

Among the various segments of packaging Livia’s products serve, LIQUOR by and

large remains the largest domain.

A very wide range of liquor products gets packaged in Livia’s PET bottles.

The apparent reasons for gradual switch over from glass bottles to PET bottles are light

weight, lesser damages in transit and cost.

PET bottles have come to symbolise one-time use, thus eliminating the possibility of

health hazards that lurk in recycled containers.

The switch over from a glass bottle to PET bottle necessarily precedes critical design

identical to the glass design.

To replicate in PET the nuances in a glass bottle’s design is always a challenge.

Sometimes, the challenges are enormous. But, when the outcome is fine, it is always a sense

of accomplishment for the team.

Innovations

UB Group (United Spirits Limited) can be said to be the single largest client

for Livia’s PET bottles for packaging liquor. With increasing prospects for this

segment, Livia is focusing on speedier production and packing solutions for specific high-

volume products.

Efforts are also on to find economical solutions for packaging Beer in PET. Some of

the solutions available at present here are either not viable enough in cost or need tie-ups with

technologies abroad.

Continuous research and development and, the desire to innovate always remain as

the motivating factors behind newer developments. Livia thanks its customers for

encouraging innovations in PET packaging solutions

5.3.2 CONFECTIONERY

Sweet Choice

15

Page 16: s.a.moorthy... Project

Livia polymer industry

In deciding the optimum, yet economical weight of the jars, factors like top-load are

taken into serious consideration with a view that the jars are thoroughly fit enough to survive

transporting and handling conditions. Confectionery is one domain where PET containers are

considered a boon for bulk packaging of chocolates and candies.

Livia supplies PET jars in a wide range of capacities upto 9.0 L.

These help manufacturers like Perfetti Van Melle India and ITC to supply their chocolates

and candies bulk-packed in PET jars. These jars also remain as an attractive promotional tool

at retail sellers’ end.

Economy is the word

Livia's jars are customised to meet the requirements of customers. Customers have the option

to choose the strength and weight category of the jars they need.

We encourage manufacturers of confectionery items to come to Livia to choose from a range

of PET jars in varying shapes, sizes and weight categories, to take the development process

forward in customising their choice to suit specific needs.

5.3.3 FOOD RELISHES

The favourite

Livia Polymer in fast expanding its domain in supplying containers for packing food

relishes.

Food and nutritional products such as Oats, Dates, Date-syrup, Honey and Cashew are

getting packaged in Livia's PET containers, which were hitherto being packed in other forms

of packaging like glass containers and sachets.

Spices and Condiments also get packaged in PET jars. Pepper, Garlic, Parsley, Cumin

are to name a few in this list. Most of them also being export-oriented products,

manufacturers consider PET as an ideal, safe and hygienic medium of packaging.

Various kinds of Pickles with its mouth-watering flavours too get packaged in PET

jars.

16

Page 17: s.a.moorthy... Project

Livia polymer industry

The list is soon to become longer, as manufacturers realise the advantages of packing

their food products and food specialities in PET.

The significant inclination towards PET containers from other forms of packaging is

due to the flexibility in PET designs, overall aesthetics and economy in cost

Beyond all these, from consumers’ point of view, PET containers are increasingly

becoming their favourites due to convenience of storage at their end. Straight-from-container

designs like Grinder Caps, Flip-Top Caps add to the ease of use.

The innovations

Continuous research and development are underway to ensure increased and optimum

shelf-life of newer food products packed in PET containers.

One can be sure that, in the not-too-distant future, virtually every food product we

come across today in other forms of packaging will get switched over to packaging in PET

containers.

5.3.4 HOME & SCHOOLS

When you find some of Livia Polymer’s PET and PP jars and bottles in a Shopping

Centre you frequently visit, take a good look at it.

You will realise that we have made those jars and bottles keeping in mind customers

like you who care for quality and aesthetics.

There is an impressive range of transparent jars, plain jars or coloured ones and, jars with

floral designs. Sizes range from 250ml to 3000ml, convenient for various kitchen and fridge

applications.

5.3.5 CHEMICAL & PHARMA

Pharmaceuticals

17

Page 18: s.a.moorthy... Project

Livia polymer industry

PET bottles play an increasingly meaningful role in packaging health-care and

medicinal products of various branches of medicines such as allopathy, ayurvedh and

homeopathy.

Some of the medical products are sensitive to light. Aroma retention is an important factor.

Shelf life is yet another factor. PET bottles with varying thickness and colours are chosen

according to the specific needs / applications.

Livia polymer industry

Cough syrups, eucalyptus oil, hair-oils, herbal oils and pills are to name a few of

product that get packaged in PET bottles.

Chemicals

Livia’s PET containers are also used extensively for packaging chemicals, household

cleaning liquids, detergents, pesticides, hand-wash and anti-septic liquids.

Novel designs of containers accompanied by ease of dispensing are what make chemical and

household products in PET look more attractive on shelves.

Livia’s capability in meeting complex and stringent design requirements of

application-specific needs has received due attention from its customers.

Livia’s efforts in identifying packaging solutions in PET for chemical solutions,

especially anti-septic liquids, with higher pH levels are continuing.

PET containers are not only easy to handle and cost-effective; they also reduce the

overall weight of the consignments that are transported, thus helping the cause of fuel

efficiency and transportation costs.
