President’s message- March 2013 Greetings again. I trust you all had a safe and enjoyable holiday break. Hopefully you have all had a chance to get out and do some hunting and/or fishing in the warmer weather. The days of summer are drawing to a close and the minds of many, myself included, are turning to deer and the upcoming cooler weather. Now is a great time to be out scouting about if you intend on chasing hoggies, or indeed fallow. The cooler weather will also assist in controlling the fires that are still burning all over the mountains as I write. I am aware of several members who have been affected and/or involved in fighting these fires and I wish you all well in your recovery. The Jim Bellingham Memorial trophy shoot was held on 10th February, and was a fantastic day (see report in this newsletter). This event continues to grow and with the continued support of you, the members, will be even bigger and better again next year. We are also running an Introduction to Deer Hunting session on 2nd March (further details in the roar), so any new hunters amongst you are welcome to attend, but importantly if you know of anyone who is not a member who may be interested in, or is just starting out hunting, encourage them to attend. The next General Meeting will be held on 5th March we will have the Ranger In Charge of the Alpine National Park, Mike Dower along to talk about the park and hunting. We will also have the Regional Firearms Officer, Ian Miles along to discuss firearms, and related issues such as storage, transport etc. We will also have more information about the upcoming Branch Camp on the weekend of 23rd/24th March. It will be another great opportunity to socialize with like-minded individuals in a relaxed setting. I look forward to seeing you there for a BBQ and a chat. Eamon Leahy Branch President

JIM BELLINGHAM MEMORIAL SHOOT - 2013 The Jim Bellingham Memorial shoot was run again this year on 10th February and what a great day it was. For the first time run under the new format, as a stand alone ADA event, rather than concurrently with a

FGA shoot, the turnout was fantastic. The shoot was conducted with two ‗five stand‘ ranges. Each shooter completing two rounds for a total of 50 targets. The day was very well supported by Gippsland

members and other branches. We had 52 shooters in total, across Mens, Ladies and Juniors and from four separate branches with members from Gippsland, Westernport, East Gippsland and Melbourne all

attending. The format allowed for those not shooting at any given time to spectate and heckle at will. All this created

a friendly, enjoyable atmosphere. A BBQ was supplied and a swag was raffled off. There was a fair spread of ability displayed, with some new to shotgunning through to our overall winner Kevin Jacobs from Westernport with a very respectable score having missed only four targets for the day.

Kevin will have his name on the memorial trophy for the second year in a row, so we need a few Gippsland members to polish up their skills for next year so we can get it back. Trophies were awarded to

the best scores on three groups; Mens, Ladies and Juniors

For the record the top three in each group were as follows:

I look forward to attending the event again next year as the event grows ever bigger and more popular, a fitting tribute to Jim.
