WHAT CAN I SAY? Except that I was extremely proud of SAM 21’s turnout and performance at the SAM 30 ‘Simplex Smackdown’ Fun Fly. From all reports everyone had a great time! So much so that SAM 27 immediately jumped on the opportunity and decided to include a follow up ‘SimpleX ‘Smackdown’ in the events listed for their Crash and Bash,

scheduled for September 5-7 and has recruited me to manage the event, so keep your batteries charged and tune up with test flights - The SimpleX lives to fly again… Special thanks are due to several SAM 30, SAM 21 and SAM 51 members who pitched in to keep the project alive and the event running almost smoothly including: Frank Womack, War-ren Pickering and Carl Worthly from SAM 30, ‘Iron Chef and steak cooker’ Brian Sargent, Gary Leopold, Ken Martinez, Brian Chan, Dr. Joe Poco, (for putting up with me) and our ’Staff Photographer’ Jeff Mate from SAM 21, John Eaton from SAM 51 and last, but not least, Mike Myers from SAM 3 (SCIF) who added greatly to the run up to the event and who has co-authored, with me, a feature piece for SAM Speaks’ next issue. And where would all of us be without our energetic and gra-cious host Miriam Schmidt and her shade, and 40 acres of clear space in which to pursue our hobby. Our heartfelt thanks to her and Robert for all they do to make the ‘Ranch’ one of the finest SAM event venues anywhere… Finally to all 17 of the ’Simplex Warriors’ who participated:

Don’t lay down your ‘swords’ just yet. Let’s show SAM 27 how a ‘Team’ looks and acts...Congrats to winner Ken Martinez...

Who knows how to have more fun than we do? NO ONE!

FYI: Dr Joe and I enjoyed having dinner at a decent hour as we had at the Holder’s meeting last month and plan to repeat a Holders dinner at their location closer to Saratoga at: 1424 Saratoga Avenue, San Jose, CA Anyone interested in joining us just show up at 6:00 or a little before… Moving on: I will remind everyone that the August meeting

will be convened at our traditional haunt - the Saratoga Fire house at 7:00 pm. (The goodie and coffee schedule is rein-stated - Attn: Gurney and Sargent) and all are encouraged to bring your latest to Show and Tell and, or, bring your technical questions/dilemma to be discussed/solved during the Open Q&A session.

The 2014 Inaugural ‘SimpleX Smack Down’, July 26th

Above: Super Chef Brian Sargent serves up the first steak sandwich to Mike Myers, a dedicated contestant. who attended from Southern California and claimed he deserved to be first ???

Above, Right: Sam 30’s Frank Womack pre-pares to exact revenge for the mid air ‘interception’ of his SimpleX entry in the ’Flyoff’ by SAM 21 President, Gary Leopold’s big, red Simplex by re-enacting the incident which was the highlight of the day. (Frank’s model was slightly damaged, Gary’s, not at all.)

Above: Sam 30’s Steve Roselle doesn't seem too unhappy as he surveys the damage to his Checkerboard Simplex resulting from the only ‘un-commanded’ crash of the day. Recent e-mail from Steve says his Simplex is ready for the next event...

Above: The pretty Simplex by John Eaton, who drew his own set of Cad plans and produced a limited quantity of laser cut short kits using a ‘local’ laser cutting company...

Above: SAM 21’s Ken Martinez, Smackdown WINNER with his ‘carbon fiber ‘ (really black paint) example. Many practice flights prior to the event proved to be valuable

Thanks SAM 30!

The 2014 Inaugural ‘SimpleX Smack Down’, July 26th

Left and Above: SAM President Gary Leopold felt so remorseful in the aftermath of his ‘inadvertent’ mid-air collision with Frank Womack’s Simplex that he sacrificed a generous part of his silk ‘pajamas’, which he mailed to Frank. Above shows Gary’s ‘pajamas’ patched into Frank’s Simplex wing making a colorful addition to the already much decorated model. Frank says, “I am not sure how this SAM 21 contaminated material will affect the normally out-standing performance of my Simplex, but I will try to adjust around it!”

Right: Gary Leopold’s beauti-ful Simplex climbs out on a beautiful day at the Schmidt Ranch. Note the downward deflection of the elevator which is typical when using the 480 motor which, is generally con-ceded to overpower the model

Above: The intense nature of the competition is evident in this picture

SAM 21’s smiling Ted Kafer. One of the ‘Final Four’, finished in second place

Thanks SAM 30!
