Salmo Secondary School V is ioning AtSalmoSecondary,wecelebratethedevelopmentandevolutionoflearningopportunitiesinpartnershipswithstudents,families,staff,andcommunity.Wecontinuetodeveloplearningexperiencesthatarerelevant,engaging,andrigorousandthathelpdevelopexcitementandempowermentforlife-longlearning.
Theintentofthishandbookistofacilitateapositivelearningenvironmentforall.Whileweplaceahighemphasisonclaritythroughthisdocument,wealsoknowthatstrongrelationshipsandconversationsareinstrumentalinsupportingoptimallearning.Pleasecontactourofficewithanyquestions,suggestionsorconcerns.

Human Values Thereismuchdebateaboutthepurposeofschoolandeducation.However,mostpeoplesupportthenotionthatlearningisaboutthedevelopmentofhumanvaluesthatarevalued,bothpersonallyandbyoursociety.Thesevaluesarethelensesthroughwhichallmeaningfullearninghappens.Incombination,thesevaluesprovidethegluethatholdstogetherskilldevelopment,competencydevelopment,andthepursuitofknowledge.AtSalmoSecondarySchool,weaimtonurturethefollowingcorevalues:Creative&CriticalThinking,Courage&Resiliency,Integrity&Empathy,andLocal&GlobalCitizenship.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT STUDENT&PARENTRIGHTSANDRESPONSIBILITIES,
DISCIPLINEPROCEDURESANDPRACTICES
APPLICATION SalmoSecondarySchool(SSS)andSchoolDistrict8’s(KootenayLake)codeofconductandrulesapplyatalltimeswhenstudentsareunderschoolsupervisionorattendingschoolfunctionswhetheronoroffschoolproperty,andwhetherinoroutofschooltime.Thisincludeslunchbreakandtravellingtoandfromschool,aswellasfieldtripswhereinappropriatebehaviorcanharmourschool’sreputation.
ThecodeofconductdescribesschoolexpectationsandacceptablestudentbehaviorasdirectedbytheSchoolAct85(2)(c)(i).ItisderivedfromtheMinistryofEducation’sgoalforHumanandSocialdevelopment,andisdesignedtopromoteasafe,caringandorderlyschoolforthepurposeoflearning.
SalmoSecondarySchoolsupportsthevaluesexpressedintheBCHumanRightsCoderespectingtherightsofallindividualsinaccordancewiththelaw–prohibitingdiscriminationbasedonrace,color,ancestry,placeoforigin,religion,maritalstatus,familystatus,physicalormentaldisability,sexorsexualorientation.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCE TheMinistryofEducationismodifyingtheB.C.curriculuminresponsetochangingneedsofyoungpeopleandtheworldingeneral.Theworldthatstudentswillfacetodayismuchdifferentfromtheoneschoolpreparedmanyofusfor.Thejobmarketischanging;manyroutinejobsarenowperformedbytechnology.Challenges,environmentalandotherwise,requirecreativesolutionsnoonehasthoughtofyet.Alongwithlearningfoundationalknowledgeinavarietyofdisciplines,studentsalsoneedtodeveloptheabilitytothinkcreativelyandcritically.Theymustcommunicatewell,beconfidentinwhotheyare,andempatheticandunderstandingtowardsothers.Thesequalitiesarewhatwealsowantstudentstolearn,andthisiswhatthecompetenciesareabout.

Themainpurposeofstudent-ledconferencesaretocelebrateastudent’slearning,showgrowthovertime,andprovideparentswithabetterunderstandingoftheirchild’slearningprocess.Whenstudentsarewellpreparedoveranextendedperiodtotellthestoryoftheirownsuccess(orlackthereof),theyseemtoexperienceafundamentalshiftintheirinternalsenseofresponsibilityforthatsuccess.Theprideinaccomplishmentthatstudentsfeelwhentheyhavepositivestorytotellandtellitwellcanbeimmenselymotivational.Thesenseofpersonalresponsibilitythattheyfeelwhenanticipatingwhatitwillbeliketofacethemusicofhavingtotelltheirstoryoflearningcanalsodrivethemtoproductivework.
Togetstudentsthinkingaboutcompetencies,studentsareresponsibleforcontinuallyreflectingonthemostimpactfulthingstheyhavelearnedthroughouttheyear.Eachstudentchosesthelearningexperiencesoractivitiesmostmeaningfultothemandexamineshowtheyhaveusedthelearningcompetencies.Havingthestudentsdothereflectingthemselves,ratherthanussimplyexplainingittothem,ensuresadeeperunderstandingandretentionofwhattheyarelearning.
Teachersstillassess,collectingmarks,andgivingfeedbackasusual.StudentsreceiveformalreportcardsinNovember,FebruaryandJune.Thestudent-ledconferenceisasupplementalmethodofreportingwhichallowstheparenttogetdeeperfeedbackthanyoumightatthediningroomtable.Youwillseetheirbestpiecesoflearning,andhearthemexplaininghowtheyaregrowingaspeople.

ALLERGIES AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE Manystudentsandstaffsufferfromarangeofseriousallergiesandmedicalconcerns.Itisessentialthatstudentswithmedicalconditionsthatcouldrequiretreatmentatschoolprovideup-to-dateinformationtotheschool.Seetheofficestaffforamedicalinformationform.
SUDDEN ILLNESS WHILE AT SCHOOL Studentswhoareillareexpectedtoreporttothemainoffice.Theywillbedirectedfromthereandparentswillbeinformedifnecessary.
EARTHQUAKES Ifanearthquakeoccurs,itisimportantthatyoudroptothefloor,takecoverundersomethingsolid(likeyourdesk)andtakeholdofyourcover(sothatitisnotshakenawayfromyou).
FIRE DRILLS Whenthefirealarmrings,everyonemustevacuatethebuildingsafelyandquickly.Attendanceistakenoutside,andteacherssendalistofmissingstudentstothesecretaryatthefrontofthebuilding.
Studentsonastudyblockwhenafirealarmringsreportdirectlytothesecretaryatthefrontofthebuilding.Ifafirealarmringsoutsideofclasstime,(lunch,break,beforeorafterschool)reporttoyourteacher.

Whenschoolsrespondtobullying,staffwillalsohelpthechildwhohasbeenbullyingotherstotakeresponsibilityfortheiractions,andchangetheirbehavior. Theywillmonitorthesituationtoensurethebullyingstops,andwillsupportthechildwhohasbeenbulliedtoregainconfidenceandasenseofsafety.
Staffmayfollowupwiththestudentswhoobservedthebehaviortohelpthemlearnwhattodowhentheyseebullying.
The“conflictresolution”styleofbringingthechildrentogetherisnotrecommendedinbullyingsituations,untilconsiderabletimehasgonebyandallchildrenarefeelingsafeenoughtotalkaboutwhathappenedsothatrelationshipscanbehealed.
