Salmo Secondary School V is ioning AtSalmoSecondary,wecelebratethedevelopmentandevolutionoflearningopportunitiesinpartnershipswithstudents,families,staff,andcommunity.Wecontinuetodeveloplearningexperiencesthatarerelevant,engaging,andrigorousandthathelpdevelopexcitementandempowermentforlife-longlearning.

Theintentofthishandbookistofacilitateapositivelearningenvironmentforall.Whileweplaceahighemphasisonclaritythroughthisdocument,wealsoknowthatstrongrelationshipsandconversationsareinstrumentalinsupportingoptimallearning.Pleasecontactourofficewithanyquestions,suggestionsorconcerns.

Werecognizeandcelebratethatlearningiseverywhereforallofus.CelebrationofLearningOutsideofSchoolform(AppendixA)weliketouseasaplatformtohelpusbettergettoknowourstudentsandtheirfamilies.Thiswillalsohelpuslearnmoreaboutpotentiallearningopportunitiesthatmatchstudents’interests,curiosities,andpassions.

APPLICATION SalmoSecondarySchool(SSS)andSchoolDistrict8’s(KootenayLake)codeofconductandrulesapplyatalltimeswhenstudentsareunderschoolsupervisionorattendingschoolfunctionswhetheronoroffschoolproperty,andwhetherinoroutofschooltime.Thisincludeslunchbreakandtravellingtoandfromschool,aswellasfieldtripswhereinappropriatebehaviorcanharmourschool’sreputation.

ThecodeofconductdescribesschoolexpectationsandacceptablestudentbehaviorasdirectedbytheSchoolAct85(2)(c)(i).ItisderivedfromtheMinistryofEducation’sgoalforHumanandSocialdevelopment,andisdesignedtopromoteasafe,caringandorderlyschoolforthepurposeoflearning.

SalmoSecondarySchoolsupportsthevaluesexpressedintheBCHumanRightsCoderespectingtherightsofallindividualsinaccordancewiththelaw–prohibitingdiscriminationbasedonrace,color,ancestry,placeoforigin,religion,maritalstatus,familystatus,physicalormentaldisability,sexorsexualorientation.

Student Parking and Transportation Studentparkingisallowedcurrentlyintheparkingareasinthefrontandsidesoftheschool.Thismayneedtobere-visitedifthenumberofstudentdriversdrasticallyincreases.Studentswhodrivetoschoolareexpectedtoobeypostedspeedlimit,trafficlawsandregulationsstipulatedintheMotorVehiclesAct.Failuretodosomayresultinthelossofparkingprivileges,andreferraltolocalpolice.Theschoolisnotresponsiblefordamagetoortheftfromvehiclesparkedattheschool.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCE TheMinistryofEducationismodifyingtheB.C.curriculuminresponsetochangingneedsofyoungpeopleandtheworldingeneral.Theworldthatstudentswillfacetodayismuchdifferentfromtheoneschoolpreparedmanyofusfor.Thejobmarketischanging;manyroutinejobsarenowperformedbytechnology.Challenges,environmentalandotherwise,requirecreativesolutionsnoonehasthoughtofyet.Alongwithlearningfoundationalknowledgeinavarietyofdisciplines,studentsalsoneedtodeveloptheabilitytothinkcreativelyandcritically.Theymustcommunicatewell,beconfidentinwhotheyare,andempatheticandunderstandingtowardsothers.Thesequalitiesarewhatwealsowantstudentstolearn,andthisiswhatthecompetenciesareabout.

ALLERGIES AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE Manystudentsandstaffsufferfromarangeofseriousallergiesandmedicalconcerns.Itisessentialthatstudentswithmedicalconditionsthatcouldrequiretreatmentatschoolprovideup-to-dateinformationtotheschool.Seetheofficestaffforamedicalinformationform.

SUDDEN ILLNESS WHILE AT SCHOOL Studentswhoareillareexpectedtoreporttothemainoffice.Theywillbedirectedfromthereandparentswillbeinformedifnecessary.

EARTHQUAKES Ifanearthquakeoccurs,itisimportantthatyoudroptothefloor,takecoverundersomethingsolid(likeyourdesk)andtakeholdofyourcover(sothatitisnotshakenawayfromyou).
