Emmanuel College sophomore Craig Schoaf was recognized on Sept. 29 at the 2013 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference

(ECAC) Honors Dinner held at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel in North Falmouth, Mass.

Schoaf, a student-athlete on the Saints Cross Country and Track & Field Teams, received the ECAC Award of Valor for his courageous acts following the April 15th Boston Marathon bombings. ECAC Commissioner Dr. Kevin T. McGinniss presented the 2013 ECAC Award of Valor to five recipients at Sunday evening’s dinner, which was sponsored by Jostens and held in conjunction with the 25th Annual ECAC Convention and Trade Show. Along with Schoaf, the Award of Valor honorees included Bucknell University’s Leonard Joseph (Whitesboro, N.Y.), University of New Hampshire’s Cameron Lyle (Plaistow, N.H.), Plymouth State University’s

Ali Keith (Northfield, N.H.) and Clark University’s Reed Powell (Worcester, Mass.). The ECAC Award of Valor is awarded annually and was established in 1985 to honor Eastern College Athletic Conference student-athletes whose courage, motivation and relentless determination serve as an inspiration to all. The recipients of the Award of Valor exemplify strength of character and perseverance deserving recognition as being truly triumphant. Craig was joined at the ECAC Honors Dinner by his parents and his brother, as well as by his coaches, Tony DaRocha and Alice Kramer, and Emmanuel Athletics Administrators, Pam Roecker and Schoaf accepting the ECAC Award of Valor alongside head coach Tony DaRocha and assistant

By the Numbers – the 2013 Emmanuel College men’s soccer team played seven consecutive home games during the month of September. this marks the longest homestand that the program has had since its inception in 2003. the Saints were able to produce a 4-3 record during the stretch including a 2-0 shutout win over Curry College on Sept. 26 to wrap up the stand.

32 By the Numbers – Senior forward lindsey garvey (Warwick, R.i.) scored her 32nd career goal against Simmons College on September 28 to move her into 4th place all-time among the Women’s Soccer career scoring leaders. She currently has 78 career points (32 goals, 14 assists) to rank sixth all-time in points.

Men’s Golf Downs Newbury in Dual Match actionBRooKliNE, mass. – Emmanuel College cruised to a 324-346 win over Newbury College in a men’s golf dual match played at Robert t. lynch municipal golf Course at Putterham meadows on monday, September 16. the Saints had previously dropped a match to Newbury, falling by 12 strokes the thursday prior.

Shining Saints

Cassie ChruscielskiWomen’s Volleyball

Chruscielski opened her Emmanuel career averaging 2.86 kills per set at the 44th Annual Oneonta State Invitational,

smashing home 40 kills over the weekend for the Saints including a match-high 12 kills in EC’s 3-1 victory over Hartwick.

The rookie also collected 23 digs to go along with eight total blocks. She was named the Great Northeast Athletic

Conference Rookie of the Week for her efforts.

Sean ColfordMen’s Cross Country

In his first race with Emmanuel, Colford was the top male finisher for the Saints with a sixth place finish at the 5th

Annual Fens Classic. Colford finished the 5k course in a time of 16:42. The sophomore ran 1st for the Saints and 8th

overall to lead Emmanuel to a 5th place team finish in the Roger Williams University Invitational. Colford’s time in the 5k

race was 16:45.80, with splits of 5:23/mile. He was the first GNAC runner to cross the line and the 3rd Division III athlete to

finish and was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Runner of the Week in back-to-back weeks for his efforts

to start the season.

Molly MetivierWomen’s Cross Country

The senior finished 1st for the Saints and 16th overall in the Roger Williams University Invitational. Metivier finished

the 5k race in 21:20.67, clocking in splits of 6:52/mile. She was the first GNAC runner to cross the line and helped lead

the Saints to a 3rd place team finish. For her performance, Metivier was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference

Runner of the Week after the Saints second week of competition.

Seals Wins 100th match

WAltHAm, mass. - Emmanuel College Head Coach denitra Seals notched her 100th career victory when she led the Saints Women’s Volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-22) sweep of Wesleyan university in the second day of action at the Brandeis university invitational tournament. Coach Seals is currently in her seventh season has head coach of the Saints, but served as Emmanuel’s assistant coach for five years prior to 2007. With the victory, Seals becomes just the second coach in the program’s history to collect more than 100 wins. She currently has lead the Saints to a 10-8 overall record and a 2-0 mark in great Northeast Athletic Conference play.

Schoaf Award of Valor cont.Alexis Mastronardi. In addition to receiving the ECAC Award of Valor, Schoaf was also named the 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Sportsman of the Year and was nominated for the NCAA Award of Valor. On Monday, April 15, 2013, ten student-athletes from Emmanuel College volunteered to work the finish line at the Boston Marathon. It marked one of many “Marathon Mondays” in which student-athletes make the 1.6-mile trip down Boylston Street from campus to help in one of Boston’s biggest sporting events. Craig Schoaf was not among the 10 volunteers at the finish line. Schoaf, a freshman on the Emmanuel Cross Country and Outdoor Track & Field Team, was on campus when he first learned of the tragic events that took place just a few feet from where the volunteers had been stationed. Fearing the worst, he sprinted to the finish line and encountered a horrific scene. He searched desperately for his teammates, only to be informed they had been relieved of their duties and sent back to campus roughly 20 minutes before the bombings. Rather than return to campus to join his teammates, Schoaf went to work alongside Boston’s first responders. Over

the course of the next six hours, he helped displaced runners, many of which had no means of communication or places to go. Schoaf walked the runners, one-by-one, to hotels and various meeting points throughout the city to ensure they would be accounted for and receive the necessary care. It wasn’t until after dark that he finally returned to campus. “We are very proud of Craig and his effort in the aftermath of Boston Marathon tragedy. In honoring Craig with the ECAC Award of Valor, the ECAC recognizes the amazing courage, empathy and bravery he showed assisting others immediately following the bombing,” said Pam Roecker, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Emmanuel College. “Craig was only a freshman at the time, but he was fearless and tireless in his effort assisting runners and families in their time of need. Emmanuel College prides itself in having a student body that is socially aware and community service orientated and Craig certainly epitomizes this on every level. Thank you to the ECAC for selecting this young man as an Award of Valor recipient—you could not have selected a better Saint!”

Fall Sports Recap through September

The Emmanuel College Cross Country team hosted the 5th Annual Fens Classic on August 31 with the 2mile and 5k races taking place around the Roberto Clemente Park.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Saints closed out the month

strong, winning their final three

matches to post a 5-6 record heading

into October including a 2-1 mark

in the Great Northeast Athletic

Conference (GNAC). After a slow

start that saw them with an 0-3

slate, the men picked up their first

win over Daniel Webster College in

their home-opener on Sept. 7 with a

2-1 final. The squad would open up

GNAC play with another 2-1 victory

over Mount Ida in come-from-

behind fashion before ending their

seven-game homestand with a pair

of wins over Newbury (2-1) and Curry

(2-0). In their first road game in over

3 weeks, EC downed Rivier 2-1 to

close out the month on a high note,

winning three consecutive games for

the first time since the 2011 season.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Denitra Seals collected

her 100th career coaching victory

and the Saints finished the month

strong winning nine of their final 11

matches to post an overall record

of 10-8 heading into October. EC

played in the 44th Annual Oneonta

but returned home with a 1-3 record.

The Saints began to turn things

around on Day two of the Brandeis

University Invitational in which Seals

notched the milestone win over

Wesleyan which propelled the squad

into the start of a five-game winning

streak. EC closed out the month with

three consecutive wins including a

pair of GNAC victories over Johnson

& Wales University and Lasell College

to start off league play with a 2-0

record.

orlando, Fla. - Emmanuel College Sports information director and Associate Athletic director Alexis mastronardi and Assistant Sports information director dan Campagna ran in the 2013 College Sports information directors of America (CoSidA) 5K this summer in orlando, Florida during the CoSidA national convention. mastronardi finished third overall among female racers while Campagna was 11th on the men’s side.

Franklin Park Golf Course. In their

season-opener, the Saints carded a

team score of 337 to finish second

overall in a tri-match with Newbury

and Mitchell College. EC sophomore

Matteo Pocobene earned medalist

honors with a 78. The following week

at the same course, Emmanuel was

able to improve its team score by 13

strokes, shooting a 324 and defeating

the Nighthawks in a head-t0-head

match. EC sophomore P.J. Levesque

was the medalist with a 79. In their

home-opener at Franklin Park,

Emmanuel shot a 341 and finished

third in a quad-match with Suffolk,

Daniel Webster and Newbury.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The Saints opened the year in

Farmingdale, N.Y. at the Rams Classic

only to fall in a pair of one-goal

games, dropping a 3-2 decision to

Western CT State and a 1-0 defeat to

Buffalo State. EC returned home to

capture a 3-2 victory over Fitchburg

State in their home-opener before

opening up GNAC play with a

dominating 2-0 win over Suffolk

University. After a tough stretch of

non-conference losses to Babson

and Curry, Emmanuel rebounded to

close the month with a 2-0-1 mark,

notching a 2-2 draw against Johnson

& Wales before downing Emerson

2-0 and Simmons 2-1. The Saints are

currently 4-5-2 overall but stand with

a 2-0-1 record in the GNAC, good for

third place overall in the early-goings

of conference action.

CROSS COUNTRY

Both the men’s and women’s cross

country teams have competed in

three races through September,

with strong showings on both sides.

The team hosted the 5th Annual

Fens Classic on August 31st with the

women finishing second and the

men fourth. Senior Molly Metivier

was the first EC racer to cross the

finish line for the women in 12th

place with a time of 12:47 in the

2 mile race while freshman Sean

Colford paced the men with a sixth

place finish in the 5k race and a time

of 16:42. Both squads ran well again

at the Roger Williams Invitational

on Sept. 7 as the women finished

third and the men fifth. Again it was

Metivier and Colford leading the way,

both crossing the line first for their

respective sides. In the final event of

the month, Emmanuel was happy to

take away third place in a 20 team

field on both the men’s and women’s

race at the Pop Crowell Invitational

hosted by Gordon College. Freshman

Marco Carseta was the first EC male

to cross the finish line with a time

of 29:39, good for 15th place while

Metivier continued to lead the

women’s team with a 15th place

finish in the 5K event with a time of

21:20

The Emmanuel College Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field Teams volunteered their time on Sunday,

September 22, 2013 to work at the 10th Annual Brian J. Honan 5k road race.

The Cross Country and Track student-athletes have consistently committed their time to working this annual event and were once again supremely instrumental in hosting a tremendous community road race in 2013.

The Saints worked with great enthusiasm through a rainy morning that eventually cleared up to a beautiful afternoon by the time the race’s 1,800+ registered runners were off. The Emmanuel student-athletes, along with Head Coach Tony DaRocha and Assistant Coach Alice Kramer, manned the race’s finish line. Together, they worked with the Racewire staff in maintaining accuracy in the race results, as well as handing out medals to all finishers.

The proceeds from the road race go directly to Brian J Honan Fund, which supports and fosters local and national programs that support education, recreation, housing and healthcare. Funds from the Brian J. Honan 5K also benefit the Scholarship funds of the Allston Board of Trade and the Brighton Board of Trade.

Emmanuel student-athletes from each of the six athletic teams currently in season attended a “Fall Team Blessing” on Thursday, September 5th. Emmanuel’s Office of Campus Ministry sponsored the blessing and hosted over 120 athletes and staff members in the College’s chapel.

The second annual “Fall Team Blessing” was led by Campus Ministers, Jennifer Roy and Crista Mahoney, and featured the Saints Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams, Men’s Golf Team and Women’s Volleyball Team.

Roy and Mahoney told the inspired story of Saint Christopher - Patron Saint of Travelers. Prior to distributing Saint Christopher medallions to each of the student-athletes, the campus ministers recited the following prayer:

“Dear St. Christopher you have inherited a beautiful name, Christ-bearer, as a result of the wonderful legend that while carrying people across a raging stream you also carried the Child Jesus. Teach us to be true Christ-bearers to those around us.

Help these athletes to be strong like you were and to be able to carry the burdens of being a student, an athlete, a young adult, a son or daughter, a brother or sister, all at the same time.

Protect all of these athletes, their coaches, and fans that travel both near and far during this fall competition season and petition Christ to be with them always.

May this holy water we now sprinkle on these medals to seal our

The campus ministers then called for each of the team captains to welcome forward their teams to the front of the chapel. Each student-athlete was given a medallion with Saint Christopher pictured on it. During a final blessing, the remaining staff members held out there outstretched hand as a symbol of blessing for the student-athletes.
