Dear Parish Families, One question that I’m sure we’ll be asked many times over the next week is, “What did you give up for Lent?” Have you been asked that question yet? Have you asked it of someone else? Over these next 40 days, as we engage in our Extreme Soul Make-over: Lenten Edition, we’ll fast, we’ll go without chocolate, or favorite television program, or maybe a favorite food or drink, a great way for us to remem-ber the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for us. But maybe there is also some great spiritual value in go-ing beyond simply giving something up as for Lent. When we engage in renovation, we don’t just tear the old out, we also replace it with something new. Gut an old sink to put in a newer one, tear out old cabinets to make way for better ones. Spiritual reno-vation projects are no different. This Lent, let’s just not ask, “What are you giving up,” but let’s also ask the question, “What are we going to do this Lent? What positive change are we going to make? How are we going to use that sacrifice to improve our fol-lowing of God and our loving of Him and one an-other? What needs tearing out in us and what new practice, attitude, habit, behavior can we replace it with? Maybe this Lent we might fast from gossip and instead commit ourselves to using words in ways that build others up. Or maybe we might give up complaining or criticizing others, God, or ourselves, and instead give thanks for the blessings that we do have. Maybe our closet could use some cleaning out. I’ll bet there’s someone out there who could benefit from our extra stuff. Whatever we do, let’s not just cut something out this Lent, let’s also add a practice, an attitude, a habit that’s going to make us a better person, more and more in the image of God. Tear out and build up! One other note, regarding our Friday celebrations of the Stations of the Cross. While we’ve become accustomed to this great prayer being led by a Priest or Deacon, that might not always be possible. While myself, or Deacon Ken at St. Vincent de Paul, will lead a number of the stations, there will also be times where another person, perhaps a parish group or ministry, will lead us in praying the Stations. I want to thank those individuals and groups for taking this step in parish life and helping to lead us in prayer! Please join us and let’s pray together! I hope to see you next Sunday, March 8th @3:00pm at St. Patrick’s as we kick off our joint year long parish Mission. It promises to be a great time and very spiritually rewarding. — Fr. John
