PASSION The contrast between the processional reading in to-day’s liturgy and the proclamation of the Passion is strik-ing. We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the prom-ised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor.

En las catacumbas, la Iglesia es con frecuencia representada como una mujer en oración, los brazos extendidos en actitud de orante. Como Cristo que extendió los brazos sobre la cruz, por él, con él y en él, la Iglesia se ofrece e intercede por todos los hombres. 1369 Toda la Iglesia se une a la ofrenda y a la intercesión de Cristo. Encargado del ministerio de Pedro en la Iglesia, el Papa es asociado a toda celebración de la Eucaristía en la que es nombrado como signo y servidor de la unidad de la Iglesia universal. El obispo del lugar es siempre responsable de la Eucaristía, incluso cuando es presidida por un presbítero; el nombre del obispo se pronuncia en ella para significar su presidencia de la Iglesia particular en medio del presbiterio y con la asistencia de los diáconos. La comunidad intercede también por todos los ministros que, por ella y con ella, ofrecen el Sacrificio Eucarístico: «Que sólo sea considerada como legítima la Eucaristía que se hace bajo la presidencia del obispo o de quien él ha señalado para ello» (San Ignacio de Antioquía, Epistula ad Smyrnaeos 8,1). «Por medio del ministerio de los presbíteros, se realiza a la perfección el sacrificio espiritual de los fieles en unión con el sacrificio de Cristo, único Mediador. Este, en nombre de toda la Iglesia, por manos de los presbíteros, se ofrece incruenta y sacramentalmente en la Eucaristía, hasta que el Señor venga» (PO 2). 1370 A la ofrenda de Cristo se unen no sólo los miembros que están todavía aquí abajo, sino también los que están ya en la gloria del cielo: La Iglesia ofrece el Sacrificio Eucarístico en comunión con la santísima Virgen María y haciendo memoria de ella, así como de todos los santos y santas. En la Eucaristía, la Iglesia, con María, está como al pie de la cruz, unida a la ofrenda y a la intercesión de Cristo. 1371 El Sacrificio Eucarístico es también ofrecido por los fieles difuntos "que han muerto en Cristo y todavía no están plenamente purificados" (Concilio de Trento: DS 1743), para que puedan entrar en la luz y la paz de Cristo: «Enterrad […] este cuerpo en cualquier parte; no os preocupe más su cuidado; solamente os ruego que, dondequiera que os hallareis, os acordéis de mí ante el altar del Señor» (San Agustín, Confessiones, 9, 11, 27; palabras de santa Mónica, antes de su muerte, dirigidas a san Agustín y a su hermano). «A continuación oramos (en la anáfora) por los santos padres y obispos difuntos, y en general por todos los que han muerto antes que nosotros, creyendo que será de gran provecho para las almas, en favor de las cuales es ofrecida la súplica, mientras se halla presente la santa y adorable víctima […] Presentando a Dios nuestras súplicas por los que han muerto, aunque fuesen pecadores […], presentamos a Cristo inmolado por nuestros pecados, haciendo propicio para ellos y para nosotros al Dios amigo de los hombres (San Cirilo de Jerusalén, Catecheses mistagogicae 5, 9.10). 1372 San Agustín ha resumido admirablemente esta doctrina que nos impulsa a una participación cada vez más completa en el sacrificio de nuestro Redentor que celebramos en la Eucaristía: «Esta ciudad plenamente rescatada, es decir, la asamblea y la sociedad de los santos, es ofrecida a Dios como un sacrificio universal […] por el Sumo Sacerdote que, bajo la forma de esclavo, llegó a ofrecerse por nosotros en su pasión, para hacer de nosotros el cuerpo de una tan gran Cabeza […] Tal es el sacrificio de los cristianos: "siendo muchos, no formamos más que un sólo cuerpo en Cristo" (Rm 12,5). Y este sacrificio, la Iglesia no cesa de reproducirlo en el Sacramento del altar bien conocido de los fieles, donde se muestra que en lo que ella ofrece se ofrece a sí misma (San Agustín, De civitate Dei 10, 6).

V. THE SACRAMENTAL SACRIFICE THANKSGIVING, MEMORIAL, PRESENCE

1369 The whole Church is united with the offering and intercession of Christ. Since he has the ministry of Peter in the Church, the Pope is associated with every celebration of the Eucharist, wherein he is named as the sign and servant of the unity of the universal Church. The bishop of the place is always responsible for the Eucharist, even when a priest presides; the bishop's name is mentioned to signify his presidency over the particular Church, in the midst of his presbyterium and with the assistance of deacons. The community intercedes also for all ministers who, for it and with it, offer the Eucharistic sacrifice:

Let only that Eucharist be regarded as legitimate, which is celebrated under [the presidency of] the bishop or him to whom he has entrusted it.191 Through the ministry of priests the spiritual sacrifice of the faithful is completed in union with the sacrifice of Christ the only Mediator, which in the Eucharist is offered through the priests' hands in the name of the whole Church in an unbloody and sacramental manner until the Lord himself comes.192

1370 To the offering of Christ are united not only the members still here on earth, but also those already in the glory of heaven. In communion with and commemorating the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, the Church offers the Eucharistic sacrifice. In the Eucharist the Church is as it were at the foot of the cross with Mary, united with the offering and intercession of Christ. 1371 The Eucharistic sacrifice is also offered for the faithful departed who "have died in Christ but are not yet wholly purified,"193 so that they may be able to enter into the light and peace of Christ:

Put this body anywhere! Don't trouble yourselves about it! I simply ask you to remember me at the Lord's altar wherever you are.194 Then, we pray [in the anaphora] for the holy fathers and bishops who have fallen asleep, and in general for all who have fallen asleep before us, in the belief that it is a great benefit to the souls on whose behalf the supplication is offered, while the holy and tremendous Victim is present. . . . By offering to God our supplications for those who have fallen asleep, if they have sinned, we . . . offer Christ sacrificed for the sins of all, and so render favorable, for them and for us, the God who loves man.195

1372 St. Augustine admirably summed up this doctrine that moves us to an ever more complete participation in our Redeemer's sacrifice which we celebrate in the Eucharist:

This wholly redeemed city, the assembly and society of the saints, is offered to God as a universal sacrifice by the high priest who in the form of a slave went so far as to offer himself for us in his Passion, to make us the Body of so great a head. . . . Such is the sacrifice of Christians: "we who are many are one Body in Christ" The Church continues to reproduce this sacrifice in the sacrament of the altar so well-known to believers wherein it is evident to them that in what she offers she herself is offered.196

Gospel at the Procession with Palms — Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem (Mark 11:1-10 or John 12:12-16). First Reading — In spite of my sufferings I am not disgraced. I am not put to shame (Isaiah 50:4-7). Psalm — My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? (Psalm 22). Second Reading — Christ emptied himself, and God filled this emptiness with exaltation (Philippians 2:6-11). Gospel — The account of Christ’s passion according to Mark (Mark 14:1 — 15:47 [15:1-39]).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For many centuries, Christian pilgrims have longed to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, and on Passion Sunday the eyes of the world are on the Via Dolorosa, the “Road of Sorrows,” in Jerusalem. As soon as it became safe for Christians to worship in public in the fourth century, a way was marked out. It was changed a few times over the years, and today’s usual route was sketched by the Franciscans six hundred years ago, alt-hough Anglicans and Byzantines have their own unique de-tours. Friday is the most favored day, although it is crowded then. Almost everyone begins at the Lion’s Gate in the Mus-lim Quarter, and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It’s less than a quarter mile, but it threads its way through crowded markets with souvenir shops and fast-food snacks. There are, just as in your parish church, fourteen stations along the way. The exact spots are not known, but what mat-ters is the pilgrim’s unique ability to see even an ordinary road in a teeming city as something more than meets the eye.

LECTURAS DE HOY

Evangelio para la procesión de las palmas — ¡Bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor! (Marcos 11:1-10 o Juan 12:12-16) Primera lectura — No oculté el rostro a insultos y salivazos, porque sabía que no quedaría avergonzado (Isaías 50:4-7). Salmo — Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado? (Salmo 22 [21]). Segunda lectura — Jesús se despojó totalmente y Dios lo llenó de exaltación (Filipenses 2:6-11). Evangelio — La versión de la Pasión y Muerte de Jesús que nos da Marcos (Marcos 14:1 — 15:47 [15:1-39])

LA PASIÓN El contraste entre la lectura procesional de la liturgia de hoy y la proclamación de la Pasión es asombroso. Vis-lumbramos cuán profundamente la Palabra de Dios se cum-ple en Jesús. Primero Jesús debe ser acogido como el Mesías, el que viene en nombre del Señor. Debe ser reconocido por todos, aunque no sepan lo que están diciendo. Todos piensan que es el rey prometido; un rey terrenal de los judíos que los librará de la ocupación romana. No comprenden todavía, ni siquiera los discípulos, exactamente a dónde se dirige su procesión triunfal. Nosotros tampoco sabemos a dónde es-tamos yendo en nuestra vida. En la fe podemos seguir a Cristo dondequiera que nos guíe, porque estamos seguros de que la muerte no es el final y el mal no será el vencedor.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Esta es Semana Santa, semana en la cual los cristianos conmemoramos con palmas, y ramos los eventos centrales de nuestra fe; eventos que alimentan nuestro espíritu con el pan y el vino del amor divino; eventos que se clavan en nuestras almas como Cristo en su cruz; eventos que nos hacen resucitar de nuestros problemas con la esperanza pascual de la liberación de todo aquello que nos perjudica, que nos agobia, que nos oprime y nos deprime. Estaremos allí con nuestros parientes y con gente que no conocemos pero que son nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo gracias a los eventos de la semana en que Jesús entró glorioso a Jerusalén, partió el pan, falleció en el árbol de la cruz y fue sepultado. Esta Semana nos une al misterio pascual de Jesús. Celebrando estos ritos antiguos y variados por todo el mundo. Durante esta semana el tiempo y el espacio se cancelan para unirnos a los misterios que celebramos, a nuestras familias, a los cristianos por todo el mundo y a través de los siglos.
