DEAN’S MESSAGE “Growing up in God’s Love During Lent (Psalm 51)”
Lent has begun with Kathara Deftera, (Clean Monday), February 27th. The journey of spiritual self-examination, repentance and renewal is the focus. Lent was created as a time for devoting greater personal attention towards two goals:
1) maturing in our love for God; and 2) maturing in our intentional, acts of love to all others around us.
Those two simple goals are the essence of what the word “repentance” means.
The following Psalm 51 (or 50 in the Septuagint) was written by King David as a result of his sin with Bathsheba. Consumed by a self-absorbed flurry of his own passions, he committed adultery, then in an effort to cover it up he committed murder (2nd King-doms, chapters 11 & 12). After King David was confronted about his sin by the Prophet Nathan, he finally chose to repent. It was during that time of repentance and soul searching that David wrote this Psalm. In these following verses, he expresses all of our heartfelt need to be right with God.
In the spirit of growing up in God’s Love through Lent, we recommend that each adult and teenage member of our Saint Sophia family, commit King David’s prayer (just 19 little verses) to your daily life…memorizing it if you can.
1 Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your loving kindness;
According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me.
4 Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight—
That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
6 Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know
wisdom. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Make me hear joy and gladness, That the bones You have broken may rejoice.
9 Hide Your face from my sins, And blot out all my iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.
13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners shall be converted to You.
14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, The God of my salvation,
And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth shall show forth Your praise. 16 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it;
You do not delight in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit,
A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.
18 Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness,
With burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
February was a bustling month for Saint Sophia! The Huffington Center was dedicated with a grand and beautiful ceremony. Trumpets played and our new building was blessed by M e t r o p o l i t a n G e r a s i m o s w i t h a n “agiasmos” (Holy water blessing). Our grand donors, Mr. Michael Huffington, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Maniatakos, Mrs. Wilson representing Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, and Mr. and Mrs. Rallis, along with dignitaries Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Councilman Ed Reyes honored us with their pres-ence. Many thanks to Timi Loomos Freshman who chaired the event and her committee for creating a memorable gathering.
We also hired two new employees for the Huffington Center. Mr. Chris Halekakis is our new Facilities Director, responsible for all the working facets of our building; and Mrs. Cindy Celis is our new Events Director, responsible for booking and scheduling events in our new facilities. (A short biography on both individuals will be presented in the April edition of the Herald.)
Our ladies of Philoptohos honored Rev. Fr. Peter Lambert at their annual Evening with Friends. Fr. Peter has been an advocate of outreach to our community through his Philanthropia organiza-tion and a dedicated servant to Saint Sophia Cathedral for decades. His contributions have been many! “Panta Axios Fr. Peter!”
A hearty congratulations to all of our Saint Sophia dance groups which participated in this year’s Folk Dance Festival in Anaheim, California. Our dance groups competed in various catego-ries with dances ranging from the mountains of Pontos and Macedonia to the islands of Crete and Carpathos. Our children numbered 65 in all and ranged in ages from 4 years old to 26 years old. They all came back winners! Congratula-tions to their directors for their dedication in instructing these beautiful dances to our youth and for perpetuating our Greek culture.
This coming month of March, we as Orthodox Chris-tians will participate in the observance of Lent—the forty day period of fasting, prayer and reflection. “Kathara Deftera” (Clean Monday) was on February 27. Once again it was celebrated with Divine Liturgy in the morning followed by a Lenten luncheon lovingly prepared by our ladies of Philoptohos. Some of our most beautiful services are held during Lent, from the Heretismoi held on Friday evenings, to the Saturdays of the Souls to the Pre-Sanctified Gifts held on Wednesday evenings. I urge all of you to please make some time in your busy schedules and attend one of these services. They are uplifting and inspiring as we prepare ourselves for Easter.
In addition, we will be celebrating a dual holiday on March 25th—Evangelismos and Greek Independence Day. Our Saint Sophia Greek School will be presenting a wonderful program and luncheon to celebrate these events on Sunday, March 25th. Our Consul General of Greece, Mrs. Elizabeth Fotiadou, will be in attendance to speak about the history and meaning of Greek Independence Day.
“Καλω μηνα” (Good Month) for the month of March and “Καλη Τεσσαρακοστη” (Good Lent).
In Christ’s Service and Love,
Loula B. Moschonas

PHILOPTOHOS NEWS
We are pleased to announce that the MOTHER OF THE YEAR for 2012 is BESS PAPPAS. Bess will be honored at the Philoptohos Mother’s Day Luncheon and Fashion Show on Saturday, May 12th at the Universal Sheraton Hotel. The solicitation letters for the program book are going out in the mail and invitations will be following soon. We hope you will join us in honoring a woman who has given so much time to the church, her family and Philoptohos.
The National Philoptohos has released its donations for the 2011 calendar year. A total of $1,479,825 was donated to Ministry commitments/programs and special collections! This covers a huge range of programs, from International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), Emergency Funds, Cancer Funds, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Retired Clergy and Widowed Presbyteres Funds, General Medical Funds, Holy Cross/Hellenic College and Saint Basil Academy plus more. Thank you for all the donations you make throughout the year that help our chapter make our contributions to these programs.
Plans are underway for the next Debutante Ball, to be held in January 2013. Chairman Katrina Beers is already working on details and has an informational meeting planned this month. For more information, you may call Katrina at 714-936-7900.
Our FEED THE NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECT is being changed for the moment. We are going to work with the Los Angeles Mission on this effort. We will be taking our donated lunches to the Mission who will gladly accept the donations, but we need hundreds of sand-wiches to hand out. On the days that we do not receive enough sandwiches we will leave them at the Mission or we may drop them off where we see people gathered for food. If you wish to be an angel and join in this project, look for the ‘collection day’ announce-ment in the weekly bulletins and please bring the lunch sacks ready made to the bench closest to the parking lot at the bottom of the stairs at the church entrance. We will leave promptly at 11:30 A.M. for the Mission. Please DO NOT go into the church kitchen or ask the maintenance staff for help with this project.
BLANKETS FOR CHILDREN: If you are a talented woman who can knit or sew a little 'blankie' for children who are in the hospital then this is a project for you. Miller's Chil-dren's Hospital of Long Beach will gladly accept your donation of a small blanket that children can hold onto for comfort or that can be placed in the bassinet with the tiniest of preemie babies. Blankets can be 6x6, 8x8, 12 inches, 24 inches for toddlers. Items should only be made of cotton or cotton fleece and stitches should be a 'tight knit stitch'. You may bring your donation to the church narthex in a bag marked for Philoptohos. These little blankets often end up comforting the parents of these little babies and children who are so critically ill. Anything you wish to make would be a wonderful donation.
KIDS 'N CANCER CAMPS FUNDRAISER: Beginning on Sunday, March 18th we will be selling See’s Candy Easter items after church. This is also our first General Assembly Meeting in the new Huffington Center! We will have the See’s candy available for purchase at the meeting. All proceeds will go to our donation for the Metropolis Kids 'n Cancer Camps in May. We will be selling for four Sundays and the last day for purchases will be on Palm Sunday, April 8th. Maybe you could do some of your Easter candy shopping from Philoptohos and help support the Kids 'n Cancer camps at the same time.
CHANGE FROM THE HEART: PENNIES AND PRAYERS PROGRAM is a Commission for Orthodox Missions and Evangelism that spreads the word of our faith through Missions. You may make a donation of any amount at any time or you can pick up a Pennies and Prayers canister in the church office. Take it home and fill it up. Your family’s spare change can help support our current mission parishes and begin new ones. Canisters should be returned to the office in care of Philoptohos on or before the Sunday of Pentecost, June 3rd.

ANNUAL APPEAL LETTERS: The Annual Appeal letters were mailed prior to Christmas and we thank you for your support and contributions thus far. Please send in your donation if you have not already done so. USED CLOTHING and CANNED GOODS: Thank you for all the generous donations of used clothing during the holidays. This is a year-long project, so please continue your donations as there are still many we need to reach. Please identify all clothing donations on the outside of the bags by indicating whether they are for men, women or children. The two new receptacles for "used clothing" and "canned goods" are working great. They are located side by side, in the general area of the chapel. Thank you! GET ON THE BUS: This project is coming and will be observed on Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day respectively. We will keep you posted as the day approaches. Thank you. THE WALL-LAS MEMORIAS PROJECT: We continue to support Richard Zaldivar, Executive Director, in their struggle to achieve the same goals we have for continued AIDS education, awareness and prevention. STREET OUTREACH: Our own Dr. Nikos Stefanidis, a Staff Psychologist at Children’s Hospital, L.A., and an instructor of doctorate candidates, is involved in many social programs. One of his programs is to counsel and guide the “throwaway children” at night on Santa Monica Boulevard. With support from Philanthropia, Dr. Nikos purchases articles of clothing/personal items to try to encourage these young people to get off the street, accept shelter, care and rehabilitation at various housing centers in the city and county. PHILANTHROPIA WEBSITE: The “Fall” issue of the PHILANTHROPIA Newsletter was mailed in hard-copy recently. You can also find it on the website at: www.philanthropiaministry.org . We thank Perry Lambert who is coordinating our website. God bless you! Father Peter

Greek Independence Day
Celebration
March 2012 Page 12
Hellenic Academy
On the 25th of this month, the Orthodox Christians around the globe are commemorating one of the most significant occasions of our faith; The Ευαγγελισμος της Θεοτόκου (Eyaggelismos tis Theoto-kou). Derived from the verb αγγέλω, which means bring a message, and the adverb eu which means good, it refers to the good-joyful message that was brought to the Virgin Mary. The announcement, by the angel Gabriel, that she would conceive the Son of God. Despite her very young age, Mary, a teenager then, humbly accepted and freely and consciously embraced God’s will that she would carry and give birth to our Lord. On the same day, we also celebrate the Greek revolution. The March, 25h, has been officially designated as the anniversary of the outset of the war of independence against the Ottoman Empire which ruled Greece for nearly four centuries. According to folklore and several academic resources on the 25 March 1821, Bishop Germanos of old Patras blessed the Greek banner at Agia Lavra to signal that what was coming to be a nation’s long and demanding battle, was starting of with a plea and good faith to God’s loving support.
Interestingly, despite the fact that almost 2000 years set apart the Evangelismos of the Theotokos and the outset of the Greek revolution, the two are related to some level. The joyful message that was brought to Virgin Mary had, and still does up to date, the most profound impact into the history of humanity. It was the message of the greatest gift and act of love from God to us. The Enantropisi of God, born as human, through Virgin Mary meant the liberation of humans from the original sin. It brought the possibility to one and all to rise up and follow the difficult but fruitful path of fighting over the evil and conquering internal freedom; the gift of being able to choose between eternal life and death.
The message of the beginning of the Greek independ-ence war signaled a long-hard battle that would liberate the nation from the slavery. It marked a new era in the trajectory of Greek and European history. It had been a seminal event in the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Whereas previously only large na-tions (such as the British, the French, or the Germans) were judged worthy of national self-determination by the Great Powers of Europe, the Greek Revolt legitimized the concept of small ethnically based nation-states and emboldened movements among other subject peoples against the Ottoman Empire (e.g Bulgars, Serbs, Romanians).
On the 25th of March, I would think, that we celebrate the opportunity endowed to us to make our own destine, determine our trajectory in life, and remain free in both an internal and external level; as individu-als and altogether as a nation. Within the course of life, as we are exposed to sort of circumstances and interactions, and as we are challenged between the good and the evil, our true freedom is shaken and tested. Unless we stay focused on the one whose miracle birth was announced by an Angel, and His way has set the example of how to truly be free and rebellious, we can very easily find ourselves fallen into traps. Because, as Elder Paisios mentioned ‘the true freedom is to be found near God’…

Walk in the Light: Spiritual Exercises in Great Lent for Young Adults by Father F.M. (Michael) Courey
This is a guidebook designed to take you on a forty day journey of spiritual transformation. The journey takes place on a path paved upon the firm foundation of one book in the Holy Bible, the First Epistle of John. The au-thor states, “I pray that your journey will be led by the Holy Spirit, that you will develop a deeper love and re-newed commitment to Christ Jesus through the love of God the Father.”
Daily Lenten Meditations for Orthodox Christians by Presbytera Emily Harakas
According to the author, “The purpose of this book…is to be of some assistance as a personal daily guide or for family devotions for the faithful. Especially for…all whose time is very limited, but still want and need to dedicate those precious moments to the spiritual part of daily living. The book can be used in the morning, by reading the Hymn for the day, the Quotation from the Fathers, and the Prayer; and in the evening, by reading the Bible Passages and Meditation.”
The Lenten Spring: Readings for Great Lent by Fr. Thomas Hopko
“The Church welcomes the Lenten spring with a spirit of exultation...with the enthusiasm of a child... The tone of the church services is one of brightness and light.” Thus the author begins the first of forty meditations on Great Lent, casting out the gloom and darkness with which many Christians approach this holy season and reveal-ing, in a simple, clear and beautiful manner, its true meaning. All Christians who undertake the yearly jour-ney to the blessed Pascha of our Lord will find inspiration and guidance in these meditations.
Ascending the Heights: A Layman's Guide to "The Ladder of Divine Ascent" by Fr. John Mack
In the sixth century, a monk named John Climacus (which means “ladder”) wrote a book, now a classic of Orthodox Christianity, outlining the stages of the spiritual life. He based his entire work on the image of a ladder of thirty rungs, stretching from earth to heaven. Each rung described a step to help us reach the goal of fol-lowing Christ and to show His love to others. This book is written to help those in a non-monastic setting under-stand how to apply "The Ladder of Divine Ascent" to their lives. Each chapter contains many direct quotes from St. John's writings, in addition to commentary on St. John's words.
When You Fast: Recipes for Lenten Seasons by Catherine Mandell
This balanced and helpful book was born out of the au-thor’s nearly decade-long quest to attain a rule of fast-ing for her family in accordance with the traditional Or-thodox Christian discipline. Sprinkled among the deli-cious recipes are sayings from the Mothers and Fathers of the early Church regarding how the body and soul are affected by eating habits—pithy illuminations to ac-company the appetizing recipes. A forward and after-ward by two Orthodox Christian priests provide excellent explanations for the underlying principles and effects of fasting.
First Fruits of Prayer: A Forty-Day Journey Through the Canon Of St. Andrew by Frederica Mathewes-Green
Join Frederica Mathewes-Green on a guided retreat through the classic Great Canon, a poetic hymn written in the eighth century and still chanted by Orthodox Christians during Lent.
Great Lent: Journey to Pascha by Fr. Alexander Schmemann
This Lenten classic examines the meaning of Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, the Prayer of St Ephraim the Syr-ian, the Canon of St Andrew of Crete and other ne-glected or misunderstood treasures of Lenten worship. Schmemann draws on the Church's sacramental and liturgical tradition to suggest the meaning of Lent in our life. The Lenten season is meant to kindle a 'bright sad-ness' within our hearts. Its aim is precisely the remem-brance of Christ, a longing for a relationship with God that has been lost. Lent offers the time and place for recovery of this relationship. The darkness of Lent allows the flame of the Holy Spirit to burn within our hearts until we are led to the brilliance of the Resurrection.
Orthodox Lent, Holy Week and Easter: Liturgical Texts With Commentary by Hugh Wybrew
The English Anglican (Episcopalian) priest Hugh Wybrew has long been fascinated by Orthodox Christianity and is interested in giving Western Christians a better under-standing of this little-known tradition. In this book, Wy-brew describes the elaborate traditions of this crucial period of the year in Orthodoxy, and how it differs from the traditions with which Western Christians are familiar.
