THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

Private devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus began before the 11th Century. The Feast was first celebrated in France through the efforts of Fr. Jean Eudes in 1670. Devotion spread and it took the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alaqcoque in 1675 for devotion to become universal. It is said that our Lord requested the Feast for the ingratitude of men for the sacrifice that Christ made for them. The Sacred Heart of Jesus represents not simply His physical heart but his love for all humankind. In 1856 Pope Pius IX officially placed the Feast on the universal Church calendar. This Friday, June 27, we will celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a Solemnity of the Lord. In the first reading Moses tells the people that God has chosen them to be his own, not because they deserve it, but out of God’s love for them. God is faithful to his covenant, and promises to show mercy “unto the thousandth generation” for those who love him and keep his commandments. In the second reading St. John tells us that God loved us first and sent his only Son as an offering for our sins. Therefore, we are to love one another as God has loved us. In the gospel Jesus invites us, who are weary and find life burdensome, to come to him and our souls will find rest. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a reminder that the love of God is present to us in the person of Christ, and that he will always be our help and our refuge whenever we turn to him.

SOLEMNITY OF THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

This Solemnity, also called Corpus Christi, celebrates the Eucharist. Inspired by St. Juliana (1193-1258), a Belgian nun who had a vision of Christ, proclaims the truth of “transubstantiation” of bread and wine into the actual body of Christ during mass. The feast was first celebrated by her local bishop and then made an obligatory feast of the universal Church in 1311 by Pope Clement V. In the first reading Moses reminds the Israelites how God delivered them from slavery in Egypt and fed them in the desert with manna. St. Paul asks the Corinthians, is not the cup of blessing a partic-ipation in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread we break a participation in the body of Christ? In the gospel, Jesus tells the crowds that he is the living bread come down from heaven; the bread he gives is his flesh for the life of the world. His flesh is true food and his blood is true drink. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Coming right after the Feast of the Trinity, the celebra-tion of the Body and Blood of Christ reminds me how much God loves us. The Father is willing to sacrifice his only Son. Jesus gives his life for us and sends us the Holy Spirit so that we can experience his forgiveness and share in his divine life. The Eucharist is the fulfillment of his promise that whoever believes in him will never die.

The story from Deuteronomy takes place as the Israelites are nearing the end of their forty years of wandering in the desert and are approaching the land that God will give them, a place overflowing with milk and honey, a place of peace and prosperity. Moses reminds the people that God has been guiding them and sustaining them throughout their jour-ney. They have eaten manna, the bread from heaven that has nourished them physically in the barren wilderness. Mo-ses tells them not to forget all that the Lord has done for them, delivering them from slavery and protecting them as he led them to the Promised Land.

The Exodus story is a foreshadowing of our deliverance from slavery to sin and death; and God nourishing us on our journey through this earthly life on our way to the heavenly kingdom. Unlike the manna which merely sustains the body, the Eucharist gives life to the soul. Jesus tells the Jews that their ancestors ate the manna and still died; but who-ever eats the true bread from heaven will live forever.

Jesus tells us quite clearly in today’s gospel that his flesh is true food and his blood is true drink. Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you do not have life within you. The martyrs of the early church wrote “Without the Eucharist we cannot live.” We would certainly still have our physical life. But without the faith and grace of the Eucharist our spiritual life is diminished and the image of Christ in which we are made will disappear. The Eucharist is the heart of our faith. Catholics believe that in this great mystery that we cannot fully understand, the bread and the wine truly become the body and blood of Christ. The Eucharist is the awesome wonder of our Risen Christ present in the world. It is a living participation in God’s acts of redemption. St. Paul rhetorically asks the Co-rinthians: The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the Body of Christ? He asks this as a way of reminding them of the obvious. The Corinthi-ans, too, needed to be reminded of the great gift that God had given them.

Like the Corinthians and the Israelites in the desert we can forget the story of the wonders God has done for us. The wonder of receiving God’s own divine life at baptism fades away in the ordinariness of daily life. This is especially true when one is baptized as an infant, unable to appreciate the experience. While everyone has a greater self-awareness at the time of Confirmation, the wonder and awe at the indwelling of the Holy Spirit also fades away in the ordinariness of our daily routines. But the Eucharist is given to us always, every day of our lives if we wish it. At the celebration of the Mass we hear the Word of God and by the power of the Holy Spirit have our hearts opened to the physical presence of the Risen Christ in the Eucharist which gives us life. It is an awesome experience not to be missed or taken for granted. God will do marvelous things in our lives if we let him.

Fr. Matt Feit will not be back with us this summer. He turned 90 last September. While he is in good health, he simply is no longer able to travel. I have always looked forward to his visits and will miss him. He is a good friend and great storyteller with a keen sense of humor. Please keep Fr. Feit in your prayers.

Next weekend we will celebrate the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul since this feast day falls on a Sunday this year. There will be a second collection next weekend for the charitable works of the Holy Father.

As we move towards the end of June and into the pace of summer, Sunday Eucharist is, of course, still the high point of each week. Summer is a time of grace and blessing. Life at the parish slows down. School is out. There are fewer meetings, most organizations are taking a break for a couple of months. We are in “Ordinary Time” with no major celebrations until the Feast of the Assumption in mid-August. Those of us who don’t “get the summers off” can take advantage of the longer, sunnier days, and the feeling of timelessness and endless possibilities that summer brings.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

COMMUNION ETIQUETTE

Long ago for some of us, not so long ago for others, we learned the proper way to approach the table of Jesus to share the sacrament of his flesh and blood. We were taught to be in proper disposition for this sacrament by seeking forgiveness of our sins. We do this in the Penitential Act within the Mass for non-serious sins and in the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation) when serious sin is an is-sue. To prepare for reception of Eucharist, there was also a fasting requirement:

1 hour from food and drink, excluding water and medications. The fasting requirement could be waived entirely if health conditions warranted it. We were taught that it is important to be present in body, mind and spirit as the Mass was being celebrated. “Full and active participation,” is what the bishops called it. Paying attention, listening to the word, making responses, singing hymns - all of these constitute that full and active participation. We were taught about the actual Communion moment when we come forward to receive the Body and/or the Blood of Christ. (One can receive either or both, depending upon his or her preference.) As the proclama-tion: “The Body of Christ” is made and the host is held before us, we are to bow slightly and say “Amen,” which is an expression of faith in the real presence of Jesus in the sacrament. We can either open our mouth or extend our tongue, or we can hold out our hands, palms up, one on top of the other. The priest or minister places the host accordingly. The host is to be consumed immediately, not when the recipient returns to the pew. Similarly, when “The Blood of Christ” is proclaimed, we are to bow slightly and respond “Amen” for the same faith-confirming reason. The recipient takes the cup from the minister, drinks a small amount, and hands the cup back to the minister. (If you are ill, please do not receive from the cup.) Intinction, the practice of dipping the host in the cup may be done by the minister when this form of Com-munion is offered, but it should not be done by the recipient. When we return to the pew, a moment of quiet thanksgiving is appropriate.

for the 2014-2015 school year!

How can our rich intellectual and spiritual traditions be passed down to the young people of our parish? Who will teach the children’s hearts and minds what it means to be Catholic?

The St. Robert’s Religious Education Program needs you!

You can team-teach with a friend or spouse, you can teach on your own. You do not have to be a professional teacher; experience helps, but is not necessary. There are trained individuals - other catechists and myself to help you. Training begins in late August and continues throughout the year. Classes are on Saturday mornings twice a month for 16 weeks – September-April Currently we need people for the following - 1ST grade and Adult Aides in the clasroom

(we are growing…and need your help) Whether you are single or married, with or without children, old or young, it is everyone’s responsibility. Why wait for someone else to volunteer? Be one of the first ones to pick up the phone and call

Dear Parishioners, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your support and enthusiasm for my work here at St. Robert Bellarmine. These past four years working on staff as the Adult Education Director and volunteer coordinator has been a wonderful experience. I have cherished the time I have spent with you in Scripture studies, journeying with you through RCIA, or working with your children as they learned how to become Altar Servers. It has been a blessing to be both a parishioner and a staff member in this beautiful community. My family and I will remain parishioners and a school family as our two youngest are still students in the school, but I will no longer be on staff as of June 26th. I am excited to begin my new position at Catholic Theological Union as the Director of Field Education. CTU is the largest Catholic graduate school in the country, and I am thrilled to be a part of their role in teaching both lay and ordained ministers. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you as a staff member. I look forward to continuing to walk with you in our community of faith. Sincerely, Chrissy
