Pastor’s Corner A very good friend of mine was diagnosed with stage four cancer. He only had months to live. It was a terrible blow, but he

resigned himself to the inevitable and began to “give away things”. He gave away all clothes, furniture, and sentimental gifts. He paid all his bills, gave the IRS their due and then wrote checks to all of his nieces and nephews — effectively emptying his bank account and savings. He went to Mass every day to receive Holy Communion. Two months ago he went to his doctor and was informed: “Hey, that cancer that was all over your body? It’s gone, you have gone into remission.” My friend, after the initial shock, broke into laughter. He has no possessions. All he owns are the clothes he is wearing, a bible, and rosary. His closets and room and bank account are empty.

Yet, now he is filled with joy. He is at peace with God. He was always a good man and Catholic. He is in good relationship with his loved ones. He is in a state of Grace. He has NO attachments to the world. He has been granted a few more days, months, years of earthly life. To pretty much “know the day and the hour” was not a curse but a blessing to him.

Well, none of us is going to leave this world alive. That’s for sure. The Gospel speaks of preparedness. Are you prepared?

While we are in the Octave of All Souls ask yourself this question: “Am I in a state of Grace? Is God’s loving presence working in and through me?” For too many of our brothers and sisters this is simply not true. Too many of us say, “I believe in God; I believe in Jesus.” Big deal. The Devil, Lucifer, Satan, Diablo...they believe in Jesus and God, too. Look at what they continue to do. God’s grace/life is not in them nor working through them.

God’s loving grace is in you! You do not earn it. You have it! Do you want to be ready for Heaven and in a State of Grace? Nurture God’s life and grace; let it grow. Imitate the good and wonderful work of Jesus Christ every day and you will be ready for eternal life and eternal joy with God in Heaven.

Protecting Our Children How to help your children with anxiety. We’re living in uncertain times, and our anxiety about what is happening today, and will happen in the future, can trickle down to our children, making them anxious, too. This anxiety may manifest in new fears, such that a child becomes reluctant to try new things, or it may exacerbate existing fears, such that a child becomes even more anxious than before. Parents can help their children with anxiety by practicing techniques for deep breathing, ensuring regular exercise and talking honestly about feelings and concerns. For more tips, request a copy of the VIRTUS article “Techniques for Calming Anxiety for Youth” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

From The Principal’s Desk Dear St. Raphael School Families and Friends,

We are doing everything we can to keep our students, teachers, and staff safe during these unprecedented times. Parents, please do your part by limiting unnecessary exposure in our community. It took a great deal of time and effort to fully open our campus for in-person instruction. Please do not jeopardize our “open” status.

Parent teacher conferences are scheduled for November 18 – 20. Please note that we have noon dismissal on these days. This year, we will have these conferences via zoom for the health and safety of our community. Your child’s teacher will be scheduling these conferences so please be on the lookout for the information in the upcoming weeks.
