Page 2 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends in Christ,

Next weekend please join me in welcoming Rev. Msgr. Andre Pierre to St. Patrick. He will share his per-sonal witness about Food For The Poor’s mission to care for the destitute as a means of living out the Gospel mandate to love one another. This ministry provides direct relief to the poor throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Msgr. Pierre was ordained for the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince in 1979. He studied at the Pontifical Bib-lical Institute in Rome and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He taught at the Major Seminary of Haiti

and worked until 1997 in the formation of priests there. Afterwards, he served as the Rector of the Seminary and as Dean of Studies in Port-au-Prince. He also ministered to the Haitian community in Washington, DC while teaching at the Washington Theological Union there. In addition to preaching for Food For The Poor, Msgr. Pierre holds the position of Permanent Secretary at the Bishops Conference of Haiti and is Pastor of a parish in Port-au-Prince.

I also hope you are continuing to enjoy the detailed explanation of the Mass that is being provided in this space each week. If you’ve missed any of these articles, you can find copies of the weekly bulletin on our parish website at www.stpatrickmchenry.org.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Godwin

The Mass Explained (Part 4)

The Liturgy of the Word

The Homily: After the readings, the priest or deacon, seeks to break open the Word we have just heard through the homily. St. Paul in Romans 10:14-15 gives us and the homilist the clearest reason for preaching, “How can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? As it is written, ’How beautiful the feet of those who bring the good news!’’’

Unlike a sermon which simply means a talk on how we are to live and what we are to believe, the homily takes the word that is read at that Mass and brings it to our life situation today. The word of God must be broken open so it can be re-ceived and digested by the congregation.

The word Homily is taken from a Greek word homilia which means reunion, company or familiar conversation. It refers to a form of preaching that is based on the Word, not on a topic the preacher would like to expound - which is a sermon. The homily continues the process by which God speaks to us, applying the ancient scriptural word to the situations of our own time and place. Vatican II documents say that the homily is one of the most important roles of the priest - the breaking open of the Word depends solely on the homilist for its substance. Its importance cannot be taken for granted. Only the grace of the Holy Spirit can transfigure familiar human words into true words of God. The homilist must call up-on the Holy Spirit to open his heart and his mind both in the preparation and in the delivery of the homily.

Procession of Faith: The Nicene Creed is called that because it comes from the Council of Nicaea which was held in 325AD, and then it was modified by the Council of Constantinople in 381AD. The profession of faith is to express the assent and response of the people to the scripture readings and homily that they have just heard. It is also to recall the truths of our faith before we begin to celebrate the Eucharist. In Rome, the Creed was introduced into the Mass at the beginning of the eleventh century (shortly after the year 1,000).

When you say, “I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church,” notice that the word “catholic” is not capitalized. Catholic means universal and this creed is used by many non-Roman Catholic churches. It is not a Roman Catholic pro-fession, it is a universal profession. When we refer to Roman Catholics we capitalize “catholic.” So you are actually say-ing, “I believe in one holy universal and apostolic Church.”

Prayers of the Faithful: The Liturgy of the Word (“story-telling” part of the Mass) comes to an end with the General in-tercessions or Prayers of the Faithful. In the prayers of the faithful, the people exercise their priestly function by praying for all humanity. We pray for the Church, nations and their leaders, people in special need and the local needs of our parish, as well as things in our heart. This is a direct legacy of the Jewish traditions which liked to add prays of request to its benedictions. In Rome, the Prayers of the Faithful disappeared from the Mass toward the sixth century and was not restored to the Mass until Vatican II in the 1960s. NEXT WEEK: The Liturgy of the Eucharist

Congratulations to St Patrick parishioner Tricia Rosga (3rd from left, next to Arch Bishop Raymond Cardinal Burke) who, along with 5 others, made her 1st Solemn Consecra-tion as a Marian Catechist Apostolate at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Cross, WI this past weekend (July 24th-25th). A 3 year home study course studying the teaching of the Holy Catholic Church along with living a holy life of prayer through ten different spiritual practices and continued learning about our faith are the requirements for a Consecrated Marian Catechist. They are called to give their whole life to our Beloved Lord Jesus by living and teaching our Catholic Faith.

Jubilee Year of Mercy Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you" (Luke 12:20). Hardly sounds like mercy! Unlike some contemporary rich folks, there is no

indication of lying, stealing, or cheating in Jesus' parable. The rich man made a living, not a killing. Why does Jesus name him "fool"? First, because of presumption. Five times in nine verses, the rich man declares, "I shall." God's not in charge here, I am! Second, selfishness--four times, "my/myself." No God, no neighbor; he talks to himself, about himself: my possessions, my productivity, my plans! So, instead of chasing "treasure for ourselves," Jesus and Pope Francis' Jubilee Year of Mercy bid us grow "rich in what matters to God" (12:21), namely, the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Give food, drink, clothing, and healing; visit the imprisoned; bury the dead. Heal with Je-sus' own gentleness the doubt, ignorance, and sins of oth-ers; comfort, forgive, be patient; and pray for the living and dead. --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Thank you to Greg Freund, Greg/Charlie & Nick Hansen, Jim Harding and Kevin/Deegan and Reese Widhalm for assist-ing Steve Doherty, Cemetery Director, in moving this statue of St. Patrick to its permanent home in Countryside Ceme-tery. It is fitting that our patron saint watches over our loved ones final resting place.

We’d like to thank the Ladies Guild for their generous donation that allowed all of the church pews to be steam cleaned a few weeks ago.

Votive Candles

Candles are lit for prayer intentions. To “light a candle for someone” indicates one’s intention to say a prayer for someone and that candle symbolizes the prayer. In

Roman Catholic Churches candles are usually placed be-fore a statue of Jesus, the Blessed Mother or St Joseph or other saints. At St. Patrick we use candles that will burn for 5 days. There is a donation box near each of the sets of votive candles. These donations help to defray the cost of the candles. The suggested donation is $3.00 per candle.
