Wow, is it really August already?! Summer always seems to be on fast forward. Even with the longer days, and less hectic schedules, the summer months just seem to whiz by. Why is that? There are just as many days in July as in March,

but waiting for the chilly days of March to turn into breezy 70 degree days of April seems to take a lifetime! Is it because for some of us September marks the beginning of another school year full of schedules, deadlines and commitments and the end of doing whatever we want whenever it suits us? Probably . And there’s nothing wrong with that. As the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun! I suspect that another reason is that we’re usually trying to stuff 6 pounds into a 3 pound bag, right? I mean think about all the great activi-ties that summer allows; trips to the beach, water parks, family road trips, and of course, baseball –three leagues no less – junior, minor and major league! All fun things to do and they all need to be crammed into about 65 days if you start counting when school gets out in June. Every year I tell myself I’m going to extend my summer mindset as long as I can – right up until Christmas would be ideal. But, eventually school supplies need to be purchased, Halloween costumes need to be made, Thanksgiving dinner has to be planned, and Christmas prepara-tions and shopping have to get done. That’s a lot of, well, a lot of STUFF. All of it fun, but all of it time consuming and there never seems to be enough time to get it all done the way we had wanted. And why is that? Why do we allow ourselves to get so stressed out about the calendar? The calendar was invented as a way to count the passage of time. Yet, somewhere along the way, we’ve turned it into a way to plan the future – something none of us can really do. We don’t know what tomorrow holds, so why put so much energy into planning what we have no control over? Why don’t we just live one day at a time? And truly enjoy the gifts of each day, instead of counting down to the next commitment, or deadline? Sure, we have to write down special events like weddings, school picture day, the kids’ sports games, doctor appointments etc., it’s a lot to remember for sure. But we don’t have to make every day getting up to that date a stress fest trying to fit everything in before such and such happens, or making this or that perfect before the family arrives for Thanksgiving etc. Every day of our lives is a gift. All of our special events, even the mun-dane events like going to the DMV to renew our license, they’re all God’s gifts to us. Heck, it’s the boring day to day things that remind us that we’re alive and we have a purpose here. We have “things to do” otherwise, we’d be, well to put it bluntly, we’d be dead. Think about this for a minute. If you were at your own birthday party, and you were opening your gifts in front of all of your friends and family, would you speed through unwrapping each gift in a hurry to get to the next one? NEVER! You would slowly un-wrap each one, graciously thanking the person who gave it to you, give them a hug and mention how much you’ll enjoy it. You would feel very special that someone thought about getting just the right gift for you be-cause they truly wanted you to be happy when you received it. My friends, isn’t that what God wants for us when he grants us a new day to wake up to? Let’s all make an effort to enjoy each day that we have for what it is, and not what it’s counting down towards. Let’s take the time to realize the joy in having so much “stuff to do”, instead of wishing for more time to enjoy it. It’s here now – and now is the time to enjoy our gifts. -Mrs. Maryanne Swartz, Coordinator of Children’s Ministries

Every human being has a great,

gift

To care,

to become present to the other,

If that gift were to be set free —
