Dear Friends in Christ,

I hope you are enjoying the brief moments of Church/Faith teachings that are being provided in this space each week. We will continue the teachings on our Blessed Mother for the next few weeks.

Happy Fourth of July. Enjoy a safe and happy Independence Day Holiday. May God continue to bless America.

In Christ,

Fr. Godwin

The Blessed Virgin Mary Jesus’ Mother, Our Mother and Mother of the Church

But, the Bible itself clearly states that Jesus had siblings? “... his mother and brothers stood outside wanting to speak to him.” (Matt 12:46); “”... Are not these his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?” (Matt 13:55); “So his brothers said to him,...” (John 7:3-4).

The problem is in understanding the meaning of the word brother. In the original text of the Gospel

(Greek), we find the word adelphos used. However, this Greek word does not just mean blood brothers born of the same parents. Rather, it was used to describe brothers not born of the same parents, like a half-brother or step-brother. It can also be used to describe other relationships like cousins, nephews, uncles, etc.. This same word, adelphos, was used to describe the relationship between Abraham and Lot (Genesis 13:8 and 14:14-16), yet these two men were not brothers, but uncle and nephew. The confusion originated in Hebrew and Aramaic, the language of most of the original Old Testa-ment and of Christ. In these languages, no special word existed for cousin, nephew, aunt, half-brother; so they used the word brother or an extended identification such as in the case of a cousin “the son of the brother of my father.” When the Old Testament was translated into Greek and the New Testament written in Greek, the word adelphos was used to cap-ture all of these meanings for male relatives.

Other gospel passages clarify these relationships. Additionally, after the birth of Jesus, although the gospels do not give us many details of His childhood, no mention is made of Mary and Joseph ever having other children. Never does it refer to the ‘sons of Mary” or “a son of Mary,” but only THE son of Mary.

This point is further corroborated at the crucifixion - before He died, Jesus said to Mary, “Woman, there is your son,” and then to St. John, who is definitely not a blood brother, “There is your mother.” According to Jewish law, the oldest son had the responsibility of caring for the widowed mother, and that responsibility would pass to the next oldest should any-thing happen to the first born. At this time, St. Joseph had died. Since Jesus, the first born, had no “blood brother”, He entrusted Mary to the care of St. John, the Beloved Disciple.

The Orthodox Churches solve this question over brothers and sisters by speculating that St. Joseph was a widower who had other children before he married Mary. These brothers and sisters would then be half-brothers and half-sisters. Per-haps this is why St. Joseph sometimes appears elderly in paintings.

This confusion is not new. Back in 380, Helvidius suggested that the “brethren” were children born of Mary and Joseph after Jesus. St. Jerome declared this as a “novel, wicked, and daring affront to the faith of the whole world.” In his, On the Perpetual Virginity of the Blessed Mary, St. Jerome used both Scripture and the fathers of the Church like Saints Ignatius, Polycarp, Irenaeus and Justin Martyr to refute Helvidius. In 649, the First Lateran Council definitively declared that Mary was “ever virgin and immaculate.” Therefore, as Catholics, based on Sacred Scripture and Tradition, we do not believe that Mary and Joseph had other children therefore Jesus did not have any blood brothers or sisters.

Q. Why do Catholics pray to Mary when we can appeal directly to God?

Catholics, of course, do pray directly to God, the Holy Trinity. We do so at every single Mass through the Our Father. Vatican II, though, recognized the “close and indissoluble tie” that unites Mary to her divine Son (Lumen Gentium, No. 53). Mary is intimately united to her divine Son, and she is “our mother in the order of grace” (Lumen Gentium, No. 61). While it is true that Catholic can and do go directly to Jesus during prayer, intercessory prayer through Mary (and other saints) still makes sense in the same way that we ask friends and family on earth to pray for us. We can ask our family in heaven (Mary and the saints) to pray for us. Prayers to Mary are especially effective in uniting us more closely to Jesus. Mary was the person Jesus was closest to on earth—therefore it makes sense to pray to Mary as she will lead us to Him. St. Louis de Montfort teaches in “True Devotion to Mary” that Mary is “the safest, easiest, shortest and most perfect way of approaching Jesus.” Additionally Christ gave His mother to the Church for the specific reason for her to intercede for us. This is seen at the Crucifixion when Jesus, by giving Mary to John, symbolically made her the mother of the Church and bringing us into the family of God.

St. Patrick Catholic Church Parish Registration - Do I Need to Register?

ARE YOU: (1) New to the parish; (2) Moving back; (3) Just Married; (4) Attending mass but never officially registered? (5) Even if you grew up in St. Patrick, you (as an adult—18+) need to register independent from your parents.

Please do not take your church registration for granted. Attending Mass is not enough; there must be an official rec-ord of your membership in the Parish. Parish registration is essential for many reasons. It becomes important when you or your family members are receiving the Sacraments - First Communion, Baptism, Confirmation and Marriage. Registration is also required for those wishing to become a Baptism or Confirmation sponsor. In addition, becoming a member of a parish gives one the identity of belonging to a family—the parish family of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

If you are not officially registered with the parish, please do so as soon as possible. All you have to do is contact the par-ish office at 815-385-0025 or stop in during office hours and request a registration packet. Registration packets are also available on the parish website at www.stpatrickmchenry.org—just click on Registration/Moving at the top of the homepage.

Have You Registered Yet?

As summer moves along I would simply like to introduce myself. I’m Father Kyle Manno and I am the new vocation director for the Diocese of Rockford. I was ordained June 4, 2016 and have been assigned at Saint Patrick’s in Saint Charles for the last two years and have just recently moved into my new assignment as Director of Vocations as well as associate pastor at the Newman Catholic Student Center at Northern Illinois University. I am truly excited to begin this new journey to help inspire vocations to the priesthood and religious life as well as forming men to become priests after the heart of Christ.

I want to begin this new role by encouraging all those reading this article to not be afraid to take up the task of daily prayer for at last 20 minutes a day. This is the most crucial aspect of dis-covering what God desires for us in our lives. He is the creator of our very souls and therefore He is the one who will reveal to us why we exist and how to perform His will on a daily basis. When we come to Him daily in prayer He does incredible things and will transform our hearts, minds, and lives! So do not be afraid to spend that time with Him daily!

Pastoral Council: The Parish Pastoral Council is a consultative body to the Pastor. Pope Paul VI stated that the pastoral council is “to examine and consider all that relates to pastoral work and to offer practical conclusions on these matters, so that the life and activity of the people of God be brought into great-er conformity with the Gospel.

Finance Council: Every parish, by Canon Law, is required to have a finance council which is given the task of advising the Pastor on fiscal matters regarding the parish.

Both of these councils have openings as some of the cur-rent members have reached the end of their term of ser-vice. If you are interested in serving on one of the councils or have a recommendation of someone to fill an open slot, please contact Megan Doherty, Administrative Assistant at: [email protected] or via phone at 815-385-0025

Parish Information Sacraments Baptism of Infants or children

under 7 years of age: You must be a registered parishioner of St. Patrick prior to scheduling a Baptism. To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please consider scheduling your child’s Baptism be-fore your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is re-quired for the parents. This is a one session class that is held on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is required and you may take the class before your child is born.

Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.

Word of Life

“The threats to religious freedom are more subtle (in the West); many people don’t even perceive them ...Whereas in other parts of the world . . . It’s bloody, violent, overt, but in both cases it’s a denial of the rights of conscience, it’s a denial of the fundamental freedom to relate to one’s own God.”

~Most Reverend William E. Lori, Chairman USCCB Ad-Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty July 2016
